An Analysis of Relationship between Cushion Gas and Gas Withdrawal in Depleted Gas Reservoir as a Gas Storage (고갈가스전의 가스저장전 전환 시 쿠션가스와 가스재생산율과의 관계 분석)

  • Depleted gas reservoir has been already explored and its geologic data, along with its reservoir properties, are already known through seismic exploration and drilling. Therefore it would be less difficult to develope a gas storage from depleted gas reservoir. Cushion gas which remains in the reservoir to maintain pressure affects withdrawal rate of working gas in underground gas storage. In this study, we attempted to investigate the relationship between cushion gas and withdrawal rate using a commercial simulator. From the analyses of the results, it is found that the minimum limit for a cycle of 5-month injection and 5-month withdrawal is 10 wells with 50% cushion gas, and 12 wells with 60% cushion gas for a cycle of 7-month injection and 3-month withdrawal.

A Simulation Study on the Analysis of Optimal Gas Storage System of the Depleted Gas Reservoir (고갈가스전에의 적정 가스저장시스템 분석을 위한 시뮬레이션 연구)

  • In this study we have attempted to evaluate the technical feasibility of "BB-HY", which is depleted gas reservoir as a gas storage field, using the commercial compositional simulator "ECLIPSE 300". The "BB-HY" reservoir has an initial gas in place of 143 BCF which is relatively small, and its porosity and permeability are 19.5% and 50 md, respectively. For "BB-HY" gas reservoir, we have performed a feasibility analysis by investigating the cushion gas (or working gas), converting time to gas storage field, operation cycle, number of wells and the possible application of horizontal borehole as well. From the simulation results, it was found that the amount of cushion gas in "BB-HY" reservoir is required at least 50% of IGIP in order to operate stably as gas storage field. When one produces gas for longer time and hence the remaining gas in reservoir is less than optimal cushion gas, no technical problem was occurred as long as additional cushion gas is injected up to the optimal cushion gas. In the case of changing the operation cycle into producing gas for three months during winter season from producing five months, the result shows that either the cushion gas should be greater than 60% or the more number of wells should be drilled. Meanwhile, from the results of sensitivity analysis for the number of wells, in cases of operating six or eight vertical wells, the stable reproduction of the injected gas can not be possible in "BB-HY" gas reservoir since the remaining gas in reservoir is increased. Therefore, in "BB-HY" reservoir, at least ten vertical wells should be drilled for the stable operation of gas. This time, when three horizontal wells are additionally drilled including the existing two vertical wells, it was found that the operation of injection and reproduction of gas is relatively stable in "BB-HY" gas reservoir.

  • Non-contact transportation system using air cushion for the manufacturing of large-sized LCD panels was considered. Flow characteristics between air pad and glass plate was analyzed using computational fluid dynamics method to obtain optimized air pad configurations. Effects of the design variables such as hole arrays from which gas is injected, gas-feeding method into the gas supplying channels, and horizontal and vertical pitches of clusters of holes were studied. Optimized air pad unit gave evenly distributed pressure contour on the glass surface and well-suspended levitation height in the experiment.

  • Non-contact transportation of a large-sized glass plate using air cushion for the vertical sputtering system of liquid crystal display (LCD) panel was considered. The objective of the study was to design an air pad unit which was composed of multiple injection and exhaust holes and mass flow supplying pipe. The gas was injected through multiple small holes to maintain the force for levitating glass plate. After hitting the plate, the air was vented through exhaust holes. Complex flow field and resulting pressure distribution on the glass surface were numerically studied to design the air injection pad. The exhaust hole size was varied to obtain evenly distributed pressure distribution at fixed diameter of the injection hole. Considering the force for levitating glass plate, the diameter of the exhaust hole of 30 to 40 times of the gas injection hole was recommended.

  • A propulsion and lift shafting system in an air cushion vehicle is flexible multi-elements system which consists of two aeroderivative gas turbines with own bevel gears, four stage lift fan reduction gear, two stage propulsion reduction gear air propellers and high capacity of lifting fans. In addition, the system includes the multi-branched shafting with multi-gas turbine engines and thin walled shaft with flexible coupling. Such a branched shafting system has very intricate vibrating characteristics and especially, the thin walled shaft with flexible couplings can lower the torsional natural frequencies of shafting system to the extent that causes a resonance in the range of operating revolution. In this study, to evaluate vibrational characteristics some analytical methods for the propulsion and lift shafting system are studied. The analysis, including natural frequencies and mode shapes, for five operation cases of the system is conducted using ANSYS code with a equivalent mass-elastic model.

  • Wire meling characteristics were examined with variation of gas formers such as $MgCO_3, CaCO_3 and Li_ 2CO_ 3$ by self-shielded flux cored arc welding. The flux cored wire of overlap type was welded by DCRP. The results obtainedareas follows. 1) Drop type was observed with no gas former, repelled type with MgCO_3$ added and short circuit type with $Li_2CO_3$ added. The variation of transfer mode was related to the blowing force of $CO_2$ gas and the surface tension of the slag. 2) Droplet size increased with adding gas formers due to the effect of $CO_2$ gas cushion. 3) Core spikes were observed more frequently with increasing the amount of gas formers.

  • This study presents investigation on the technical characteristics and field cases of the salt cavern storage method for large-scale hydrogen storage. The salt cavern storage method enables effective hydrogen storage compared to other methods due to the low porosity and permeability of the rock salt that constitutes the cavern, which is not likely to leak and requires a small amount of cushion gas for operation. In addition, there is no chemical reaction between rock salt and hydrogen, and multiple injection/withdrawl cycles can be performed making it effective for peak shaving and short-term storage. The salt cavern is formed in three stages: leaching, debrining, and filling, and leakage tests are conducted to ensure stable operation. Field applications are currently performing to meet industrial demand in the surrounding area of four sites in the UK and Texas, USA, and salt cavern operation is being prepared for energy storage in European countries such as Germany and France. The investigated results in this study can be utilized as a basic guideline for the design of future hydrogen storage projects.

Automotive Airbag Inflator Analysis Using Measured Properties of Modern Propellants (추진제 특성을 이용한 에어백 인플레이터 성능 제어에 대한 실험 및 해석에 대한 연구)

  • An airbag is composed of housing assembly, door assembly, cushion assembly, and an inflator. The inflator is the essential part that generates gas for airbag. When an airbag is activated, it effectively absorbs the crash energy of the passenger by inflating a cushion. In this study, tank tests were performed with newly synthesized propellants with various compositions, and the results are compared with the numerical results. In the simulation of inflator, a zonal model has been adopted which consisted of four zones of flow regions: combustion chamber, filter, gas plenum, and discharge tank. Each zone was described by the conservation equations with specified constitutive relations for gas. The pressure and temperature of each zone of the inflator were calculated and analyzed and the results were compared with the tank test data. In the zone of discharge tank the pressure quickly rose, the pattern of pressure curve was very similar to the pressure curve of real test. And in zone 1 & 2 & 3 the mass of products was increased and decreased with time. In zone 4, the mass of products was increased with time like real inflator. From the similarity of pressure curve in zone 4 and closed bomb calculation the modeled results are well correlated with the experimental values.

  • To simulate strength reliability and durability of ceramic parts under gas turbine application environments, particle impact damage behaviors in silicon carbide oxidized at 1673 K and 1523 K for 200 hours in atmosphere were investigated. The long-term oxidation produced a slight increase in the static fracture strength. Particle impact caused a spalling of oxide layer. The patterns of spalling and damage induced were dependent upon the property and impact velocity of the particle. Especially, the difference in spalling behaviors induced could be explained by introducing the formation mechanism of lateral crack and elastic-plastic deformation behavior at impact sit. At the low impact velocity regions, the oxidized SiC showed a little increase in the residual strength due to the cushion effect of oxide layer, as compared with the as-received SiC without oxide layer.
