On the snap-buckling phenomenon in nanocomposite curved tubes

  • The nonlinear snap-through buckling of functionally graded (FG) carbon nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) curved tubes is analytically investigated in this research. It is assumed that the FG-CNTRC curved tube is supported on a three-parameter nonlinear elastic foundation and is subjected to the uniformly distributed pressure and thermal loads. Properties of the curved nanocomposite tube are distributed across the radius of the pipe and are given by means of a refined rule of mixtures approach. It is also assumed that all thermomechanical properties of the nanocomposite tube are temperature-dependent. The governing equations of the curved tube are obtained using a higher-order shear deformation theory, where the traction free boundary conditions are satisfied on the top and bottom surfaces of the tube. The von Kármán type of geometrical non-linearity is included into the formulation to consider the large deflection in the curved tube. Equations of motion are solved using the two-step perturbation technique for nanocomposite curved tubes which are simply-supported and clamped. Closed-form expressions are provided to estimate the snap-buckling resistance of FG-CNTRC curved pipes rested on nonlinear elastic foundation in thermal environment. Numerical results are given to explore the effects of the distribution pattern and volume fraction of CNTs, thermal field, foundation stiffnesses, and geometrical parameters on the instability of the curved nanocomposite tube.

  • The bending process for the circular curved tube and rectangular curved tube with fins can be developed by the hot metal extrusion machine with the multiple punches moving in the different velocity. The bending phenomenon can be controlled by the two variables. The one of them is the difference of velocity at the die exit section by the different velocity of billets through the multi-hole container. The other is the one by the different hole diameter. The results of the experiment show that the circular curved tube with fins and rectangular curved tube with pins can be formed by the extrusion process and that the curveture of the product can be controlled by the velocity of punch and diameter of container hole and that the defects such as the distortion of section and the thickness change of the wall of tube the folding and wrinkling of thin tube and fins did not happen after the bending processing by the extrusion bending machine.

  • Experimental study on the fluidelastic instability (FEI) of a curved tube bundle in single phase downward cross flow is investigated for the design qualification and analysis input preparation of helical coiled steam generator tubing. A 6×9 normal square curved tube array with equal and different vertical/horizontal pitch-to-diameter ratio was under-tested up to 6 m/s in term of gap flow velocity to measure the critical velocity for FEI. The critical velocity for FEI was measured at the turning point from the vibration amplitude plot along the gap flow velocity. Our test results were compared with straight tube results and published data in the design guideline. The applicability of the current design guidelines to a curved tube bundle is also assessed. We found that introducing frequency difference in a curved tube array increases the critical velocity for fluidelastic instability.

Hot Metal Extru-Bending Process for the Aluminum Curved Tube Product (알루미늄 중공 곡관제품의 열간 압출굽힘가공)

  • The bending phenomenon has been known to be occurred by the different of velocity at the die exit. The difference of velocity at the die exit section can be obtained by the different velocity of billets through the multi-hole container and by the cohesion of billet inside the porthole die chamber. The bending phenomenon can be controlled by the different hole diameter. The experiments using aluminium material for the curved tube product had been done. The results of the experiment show that the curved tube product can be formed by the extru-bending process without the defects such as the distortion of section and the thickness change of the wall of tube and the folding and wrinkling. It is known that the welding and extruding of each billet has done simultaneously although the curved tube is extruded with four billets.

  • A digital micro holographic particle tracking velocimetry (HPTV) system consisting of a high-speed camera and a single laser with acoustic optical modulator (AOM) chopper was established. The digital micro HPTV system was applied to water flow in a micro curved-tube for measuring instantaneous 3-D velocity field data consecutively. The micro curved-tube is using to reproduce the dorsal aorta or utilize in various lap-on-a-chip. The temporal evolution of a three-dimensional water flow in the micro curved-tube (the curvature, ${\kappa}$=1/${\phi}$, 2/${\phi}$, 4/${\phi}$, 8/${\phi}$) of 100 ${\mu}m$ and 300 ${\mu}m$ inner diameters was obtained and mean velocity field distribution was obtained by statistical-averaging the instantaneous velocity fields.

  • In this note, we consider a curved tube with varying cross-section formed by rotating open bounded Euclidean domains with respect to a reference curve, and successfully give a lower bound to the threshold of the Laplacian on the tube, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions on the surface and Neumann conditions at the ends of the tube. This generalizes the corresponding result in [1].

The difference of velocity at the die exit can be controlled by the two variables, the one of them is the different velocity of extrusion punch through the multi-hole container, the other is the difference of hole diameter of muliti-hole container. In this paper the difference of hole diameter is applied. So it can bend during extruding products because of the different amount of two billets when billets would be bonded in the porthole dies cavity. And the bending curvature can be controlled by the size of holes. The experiments with aluminum material for the curved tube product had been done for circular or rectangular curved tube section. The results of the experiments show that the curved tube product can be formed by the extru-bending process without the defects such as distortion of section and thickness change of wall of tube and folding and wrinkling. The curvature of product can be controlled by shape of cross section and the difference of billet diameters. And it is known that the bonding and extruding and bending process can be done simultaneously in the die cavity by the experiments that rectangular hollow curved tubes could be extruded by porthole dies with four different size billets made of aluminum material. And it shows that bending phenomenon can happen during extruding with for different billets from the analysis by DEFORM-3D.

Large amplitude free vibrations of FGM shallow curved tubes in thermal environment

  • In the current investigation, large amplitude free vibration behavior of shallow curved pipes (tubes) made of functionally graded materials is investigated. Properties of the tube are distributed across the radius of the tube and are obtained by means of a power law function. It is also assumed that all thermo-mechanical properties are temperature dependent. The governing equations of the tube are obtained using a higher order shear deformation tube theory, where the traction free boundary conditions are satisfied on the top and bottom surfaces of the tube. The von Kármán type of geometrical non-linearity is included into the formulation to consider the large displacements and small strains. Uniform temperature elevation of the tube is also included into the formulation. For the case of tubes which are simply supported in flexure and axially immovable, the governing equations are solved using the two-step perturbation technique. Closed form expressions are provided to obtain the small and large amplitude fundamental natural frequencies of the FGM shallow curved tubes in thermal environment. Numerical results are given to explore the effects of thermal environment, radius ratio, and length to thickness ratio of the tube on the fundamental linear and non-linear frequencies.

  • The bending phenomenon during extruding one product using four billets can be obtain by the difference of hole diameters in the multi-hole container. The difference of hole diameter caused the difference of billet amount inserted in the die cavity. As results, it can bend during extruding products by the different amount of two billets and by the cohesion of billets in the porthole dies cavity. And the bending curvature can be controlled by the size of holes and billets. The experiments using aluminium material had been done for the rectangular and square curved tube product. The results of the experiment show that the curved aluminum tube product can be bended by the extru-bending process without the defects such as the distortion of section and the thickness change of the wall of tube and the folding and wrinkling. The curvature of product is affected by shape of cross section and the difference of billet diameters. It is known that the welding and extruding and bending can be done simultaneously in the die cavity when a rectangular hollow curved tube would be extruded by porthole dies using four different size billets made of aluminum material.
