Mechanics-Based Determination of the Center Roller Displacement in Three-Roll Bending for Smoothly Curved Rectangular Plates

  • The objective of this paper is to develop a logical procedure to determine the center roller displacement, in the three-roll bending process, which is required in the fabrication of curved rectangular plates with a desired curvature. To this end, the mechanics of the process was analyzed by both analytical and finite element approaches. Comparisons of the results reveal that a simple analytical procedure, based on the beam theory, yields a reasonably accurate relationship between the center roller displacement and residual curvature. With further development and refinement, the proposed in this work has great premise for practical application, particularly automation of the process.

  • A new equivalent curved beam theory is developed for the analysis of the corner part of ship structures, in which effects of distributed loads and asymmetricity with two or three connected parts are considered. Equivalent loads are obtained from equilibrium conditions between the distributed loads and the member forces and moments at the ends of curved beam. And an equivalent curved beam for the asymmetric structure is obtained by superposing the equivalent symmetric parts which have equivalent stiffness. From the sample calculation, it is found that the results of the new equivalent curved beam theory are well agreed with those of finite element method using membrane elements with little computing time and sufficient accuracy.

  • The equation of motion of the drill string along the excavation trajectory was analyzed using the Lagrangian approach together with the finite element method (FEM). A drill string of circular cross section is constructed by combining a plurality of circular axes each having 12 degrees of freedom (DOF). FEM analysis can observe the vibration and dynamic changes of the entire drill string, and it is easy to apply comprehensive boundary conditions to reproduce the simulation of a realistic drill string. In this study, the constructed FEM motel was simulated. In order to apply the FEM program to the actual drill trajectory, the dynamic analysis of the curved beam was verified by comparison with the actual values. The dynamic change over time was observed.

  • The strength, deformation and buckling of a large engineering structure consisting of four ellipsoidal shells, two cylindrical shells with stiffening ribs and large holes, one conical shell and three pairs of large flanges under external pressure, self weight and heat sinks have been analysed by using two kinds of five different finite elements - four assumed displacement finite elements (shell element with curved surfaces, axisymmetric conical shell element with variable thickness, three dimensional eccentric beam element, axisymmetric solid revolutionary element) and an assumed stress hybrid element (a 3-dimensional special element developed by authors). The compatibility between different elements is enforced. The strength analyses of the top cover and the main vessel are described in the paper.

  • In this paper, a study on beam synthesis technique of conformal array was performed. It is applied to various radar systems that can perform beam steering without deterioration of performance due to beam steering in a general linear arrangement. Unlike the beam synthesis technique in the planar linear array, the conformal array has a radiation element located on a curved surface, so it is necessary to compensate for a difference in length from the radaation element to the wave front surface. In addition, by calculating the offset angle for each radiation element and applying it during actual synthesis, it was possible to predict an accurate beam pattern. In this paper, length compensation and offset angle were calculated and applied to beam pattern synthesis to perform beam pattern comparison, and performance was compared through mathematical analysis.

Ultimate strength behavior of steel-concrete-steel sandwich beams with ultra-lightweight cement composite, Part 2: Finite element analysis

  • Ultra-lightweight cement composite (ULCC) with a compressive strength of 60 MPa and density of $1,450kg/m^3$ has been developed and used in the steel-concrete-steel (SCS) sandwich structures. This paper investigates the structural performances of SCS sandwich composite beams with ULCC as filled material. Overlapped headed shear studs were used to provide shear and tensile bond between the face plate and the lightweight core. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite element (FE) model was developed for the ultimate strength analysis of such SCS sandwich composite beams. The accuracy of the FE analysis was established by comparing the predicted results with the quasi-static tests on the SCS sandwich beams. The FE model was also applied to the nonlinear analysis on curved SCS sandwich beam and shells and the SCS sandwich beams with J-hook connectors and different concrete core including ULCC, lightweight concrete (LWC) and normal weight concrete (NWC). Validations were also carried out to check the accuracy of the FE analysis on the SCS sandwich beams with J-hook connectors and curved SCS sandwich structure. Finally, recommended FE analysis procedures were given.

  • In this paper, a three-dimensional part model is constructed for the finite element analysis of hemming models where hemming defects frequently occur. The roller path is modeled as the boundary condition with the one-dimensional beam element and the revolute joint model. With the constructed part model and the roller movement, a finite element analysis has been pursued in order to identify the hemming load and hemming defects such as wrinkling in the flange region. The analysis result shows that the maximum hemming load occurs in the intake situation while oscillatory behavior of the load is found especially when hemming the curved model because of wrinkle generation. This paper compares the amplitude and the period of wrinkle between the analysis result and the experiment, which shows good agreement with each other.

  • Pyramid type three roll bending machines are widely used in roll-bending process to produce singly curved plate. In forming singly curved plate, controlling the vertical displacement of the center roller is most important to acquire the shape required and automation system of the process. In this paper roller bending process is modeled as an elastic-plastic phenomenon and analyzed using beam theory and finite element method. In finite element analysis the workpiece is modeled by using beam elements and plane strain elements respectively. Through the analyses vertical center roller displacement is obtained to get constant curvature distribution along arc length. The relationship between center roller displacement and curvature in steady state as well as residual stress and strain along plate thickness direction are calculated through finite element analysis.

Direct analysis of steel frames with asymmetrical semi-rigid joints

  • Semi-rigid joints have been widely studied in literature in recent decades because they affect greatly the structural response of frames. In literature, the behavior of semi-rigid joints is commonly assumed to be identical under positive and negative moments which are obviously incorrect in many cases where joint details such as bolt arrangement or placement of haunch are vertically asymmetrical. This paper evaluates two common types of steel frames with asymmetrical beam-to-column joints by Direct Analysis allowing for plasticity. A refined design method of steel frames using a proposed simple forth order curved-quartic element with an integrated joint model allowing for asymmetrical geometric joint properties is presented. Furthermore, the ultimate behavior of six types of asymmetrical end-plate connections under positive and negative moment is examined by the Finite Element Method (FEM). The FEM results are further applied to the proposed design method with the curved-quartic element for Direct Analysis of two types of steel frames under dominant gravity or wind load. The ultimate frame behavior under the two different scenarios are examined with respect to their failure modes and considerably different structural performances of the frames were observed when compared with the identical frames designed with the traditional method where symmetrical joints characteristics were assumed. The finding of this research contributes to the design of steel frames as their asymmetrical beam-to-column joints lead to different frame behavior when under positive and negative moment and this aspect should be incorporated in the design and analysis of steel frames. This consideration of asymmetrical joint behavior is recommended to be highlighted in future design codes.

  • One of the objectives of this study is to implement the direct calculation of the torsional moment of inertia for non-circular cross-sections, which is based on the St. Venant torsion formulation and the finite element method. Recently the proposed method provides a unique calculation of the torsional rigidity of simply and multiply connected cross-sections. Next, free vibration analyses of cylindrical and non-cylindrical helices with non-circular cross-sections are solved by a curved two-nodded mixed finite element based on the Timoshenko beam theory. Some thin-thick closed or open sections are handled and the natural frequencies of cylindrical and non-cylindrical helices are compared with the literature and the commercial finite element program SAP2000.
