  • The applicability of the ultrasonic C-scan inspection is restricted due to the deterioration of mechanical properties of specimen during the test. Therefore, the aim of this research is applied to Eddy Current (EC) test substitute for the C-scan inspection in CFRP tube containing defects. This research is to evaluate the EC signals for the inspection of CFRP tube containing various circular hole defects (20% to 100% depth to the specimen thickness) using the unloading specimen and radial loading specimen. This study was considered the following points; 1) Analysis of EC signals for the inspection of saw-cut defect and circular hole defect, 2) The evaluation of defect depths and EC signals relationship. 3) Variation of EC signal owing to the radial load. In conclusions, the high frequency such as 300∼500 kHz made it possible to the inspection of 40% to 100% defects. Particularly, in case of 20% defect, the EC signal was not detected due to the noise of micro-crack and delamination. While the depth of the hole defects were decreasing, the difference of the phase angle between unloading specimen and radial loading specimen was gradually increasing.

  • In a three-phase system, three-phase AC signals can be translated into two-phase DC signals through a coordinate transformation. Thus, the PI regulator can realize a zero steady-state error for the DC signals. In the control of a three-phase grid-connected inverter, the phase angle of grid is normally detected by a phase-locked loop (PLL) and takes part in a coordinate transformation. A novel control strategy for a three-phase grid-connected inverter with a frequency-locked loop (FLL) based on coordinate transformation is proposed in this paper. The inverter is controlled as a current supply. The grid angle, which takes part in the coordinate transformation, is replaced by a periodic linear changing angle from $-{\pi}$ to ${\pi}$. The changing angle has the same frequency but a different phase than the grid angle. The frequency of the changing angle tracks the grid frequency by the negative feedback of the reactive power, which forms a FLL. The control strategy applies to non-ideal grids and it is a lot simpler than the control strategies with a PLL that are applied to non-ideal grids. The structure of the FLL is established. The principle and advantages of the proposed control strategy are discussed. The theoretical analysis is confirmed by experimental results.

  • Eddy current (EC) testing methods are widely used in a variety of applications including the inspection of steam generator tubes in nuclear power plants, aircraft parts and airframes. A key factor that affects the EC signal is lift-off which means the physical distance between a sensor and a specimen in the testing. In practice, it is difficult to keep track of the actual value of the lift -off during a specific experiment, simulation or testing in the field, which is essential for accurate interpretation of the signal to be used in the following steps. Hence it is necessary to have a scheme to render the EC signal invariant to the effects of lift-off in spite of the changes in the real world. This paper describes a new method for compensating EC signals for variations in lift-off by acquiring an invariance feature using a homomorphic operator and neural network techniques. The signals from various lift-offs are transformed to obtain a zero lift-off equivalent signal that can be subsequently used for defect characterization in the next step.

  • This paper presents the comparison of starting current characteristics of a three-phase induction motor fed by two types of soft starters. The first soft starter under investigation is a conventional AC voltage controller on the basis of a phase-control technique. The other is the proposed asynchronous PWM AC chopper which is developed from the conventional synchronous PWM AC chopper. In this paper, the proposed asynchronous PWM AC chopper control scheme is developed by generating only two asynchronous PWM signals for a three-phase main power circuit (6 switching devices) from a single voltage control signal which is compared with a single sawtooth carrier signal. By this approach, the PWM signals are independent and easy to implement since the PWM signals do not need to be synchronized with a three-phase voltage source. Details of both soft starters are discussed. The experimental and simulation results of the starting currents are shown. It is found that the asynchronous PWM AC chopper efficiently works as a suitable soft starter for the three-phase induction motor due to that the starting currents are reduced and are sinusoidal with less harmonic contents, when being compared with the starting current waveforms using the conventional phase-control starting technique. Also the proposed soft starter offers low starting electromagnetic torque pulsation.

  • G. Binnig and H. Rohrer introduced the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) in 1982 and developed it into a powerful and not to be missed physical tool. Scanning tunneling Microscopy is a real space surface imaging method with the atomic or subatomic resolution in all three dimensions. The tip is scanned over the surface by two piezo translators mounted parallel (X-piezo and Y-piezo) to the surface and perpendicular to each other. The voltage applied to the third piezo (Z-piezo) translator mounted perpendicular to the surface to maintain the tunneling current through the gap at a constant level reflects then the topography of the surface. The feed back control loop for the constant gap current is designed using the automatic control technique. In the designing process of the feed back loop, the identification of the gap dynamics is very complex and has difficulty. In this research, using some suitable test signals, the system dynamics of the gap including the Z-piezo are investigated. Especially, in this paper, a system model is proposed for the gap and Z-piezo series system. Indicial response is used to find out the model. The driving voltage of the Z-piezo and the tunneling current are considered as input and output signals respectively.

  • Food is important to any animal, and a large part of the behavioral repertoire is concerned with ensuring adequate nutrition. Two main nutritional sensations, hunger and satiety, produce opposite behaviors. Hungry animals seek food, increase exploratory behavior and continue feeding once they encounter food. Satiated animals decrease exploratory behavior, take rest, and stop feeding. The signals of hunger or satiety and their effects on physiology and behavior will depend not only on the animal's current nutritional status, but also on its experience and the environment in which the animal evolved. In our novel, nutritionally rich environment, improper control of appetite contributes to diseases from anorexia to the current epidemic of obesity. Despite extraordinary recent advances, genetic contribution to appetite control is still poorly understood partly due to lack of simple genetic model systems. In this review, we will discuss current understanding of molecular and cellular mechanisms by which animals regulate food intake depending on their nutritional status. Then, focusing on relatively less known muscarinic and cGMP signals, we will discuss how the molecular and behavioral aspects of hunger and satiety are conserved in a simple invertebrate model system, Caenorhabditis elegans so as for us to use it to understand the genetics of appetite control.

  • In vector control technique, stator currents of an induction motor are transformed to equivalent d-q currents in a reference frame consist of d and q axis, each of which is coincide with flux and torque direction respectively. Since the current in q-axis is related to the torque in a synchronously rotating frame, torque is estimated as a function of q-axis current and flux. In this paper, a method to estimate torque of an induction motor based on the measurement of 3-phase currents and rotating velocity of a rotor is presented. Graphic-programming is used to measure signals, to estimate the torque and to show the result in the form of user friendly graph in window environment. To stabilize the fluctuation of estimated torque caused from the small measurement error of the rotor velocity, the stator current is reconstructed in a program based on measured signals. The experimental results executed under the velocity of 500 rpm, 1500 rpm without load and 1500 rpm with load show that the proposed method estimates the torque very well.

  • The purpose of this research is development of EGG system for quantitative assessment of laryngeal function using speech and electroglotto-graphic data. The designed EGG system is 4-electrodes system which excitation current source is supplied from 1st to 4th electrode. The output signal.: from 2nd and 3rd electrodes, which are motivated by frequency of excitation current source, are air-pressure waveforms from vocal folds. After demodulation process, we obtain pitch signals of the modulated waveforms by excitation current source through differentiator which cuts off frequency below 0.1Hz. Software processing methods were used as conventional pitch extraction methods, but the proposed system is designed to analog hardware in order to eliminate interferences from low formant frequency of speech. We will construct the discriminating database between pathological subjects and control groups on each case. Using the proposed 3 channel EGG system and LMS algorithm, it will be detected that the distinctive characteristics of laryngeal function of voiced region and other regions by EGG signals and LPC spectra.

  • We present the magnitude of terahertz electromagnetic pulses when femtosecond laser pulses are moving along to a dipole antenna. The dipole antenna chip has maximum 4.7 nA THz current, generated at 11 DC volt. This current is 3.4 times bigger than the current of a $300{\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ separated transmission line structure chip that has 70 DC volt. We also apply an AC square wave voltage to the dipole antenna from 0.1 volt to 10 volt for binary signals using the terahertz electromagnetic pulses.

  • Herein, we propose a LoRaWAN-based small draft system that can measure the ocean current flow (speed, direction, and distance) in real time at the request of the Coast Guard to develop a device that can promptly find survivors at sea. This system has been implemented and verified in the early stages of rescue after maritime vessel accidents, which are frequent. GPS signals often transmit considerable errors, so correction algorithms using the improved triangulation method algorithm are required to accurately indicate the direction of currents in real time. This paper is structured in the following manner. The introduction section elucidates rescue activities in the case of a maritime accident. Chapter 2 explains the characteristics and main parameters of the GPS surveying technique and LoRaWAN communication, which are related studies. It explains and expands on the critical distance error correction algorithm for GPS signals and its improvement. Chapter 3 discusses the design and analysis of small draft buoys. Chapter 4 presents the testing and validation of the implemented system in both onshore and offshore environments. Finally, Section 5 concludes the study with the expected impact and effects in the future.
