Recently a new generation of crown and bridge veneering resins containing submicron glass fillers was introduced. These ultrasmall particle hybrid composite materials distinguish themselves, compared with conventional microfill crown and bridge resins, through improved mechanical properties. It is claimed that these composites are suitable for metal free crowns and even bridges using fiber reinforcement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of thermal cycling on the tensile strength of the following veneering composites: Artglass(Heraeus Kulzer Co., Wehrheim, Germany), Estonia(Kuraray Co.. Japan), Sculpture(Jeneric Pentron Co., Wallingford, U.S.A.), and Targis(Ivoclar Co., Schaan Liechenstein). According to manufacturer's instructions, rectangular tensile test specimens measuring $1.5{\times}2.0{\times}4.5mm$ were made using a teflon mold. Whole specimens were divided into two groups. One group was dried in a desiccator at $25^{\circ}C$ for 10 days, and another group was subjected to thermal cycling($10,000{\times}$) in water($5/55^{\circ}C$). All test specimens were placed in a universal testing machine and loaded until fracture with a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. Weibull analysis and Tukey's test were used to analyze the data. The fracture surfaces of specimens were observed in SEM and the aliphatic C=C absorbance peak of Estenia and Targis resin was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy. Within the limitations imposed in this study, the following conclusions can be drawn: 1. Both in drying condition and thermal cycling condition, the highest tensile strength was observed in Estenia testing group(p<0.05). 2. The strength data were at to single-mode Weibull distribution, and the Weibull modulus of all veneering composite resin specimens increased after thermal cycling treatment. 3. After thermal cycling test, the highest tensile strength was observed in the Estenia group, and the lowest value was observed in the Targis group. The tensile strength values showed the significant differences between each group(p<0.05) 4. The aliphatic C=C absorbance peak of Estonia and Targis resin was decreased after light curing, and there was no distinct change after thermal cycling.

The purpose of this present study was to develop a new way of self-curing acrylic resin, using commercially available polyphosphate, Calgon, which is known to be antimicrobial and safe. For the study, polyphosphate(polyP) was blended with acrylic powder and devided into four groups as follows: no polyP(control), 1% polyP, 2% polyP, and 3% polyP. For the experiment, Streptococcus mutans GS5, Streptococcus sobrinus 6715, Streptococcus gordonii G9B and Challis, Porphyromonas gingivalis 2561, and Candida albicans ATCC 90027 were used. Resin specimens in each group were tested in vitro for the purpose of investigating the effect of polyP on the microbial attachment, growth and hydrophobicity of the resin surface. The results were as follows. 1. PolyP added to the acrylic resin decreased attachment of S. mutans GS5, S. sobrinus 6715, S. gordonii G9B. The greater binding inhibition was found in acrylic resin polymerized with polyP at higher concentrations. 2. The addition of polyP to acrylic resin failed to significantly affect the growth of the tested microorganisms. 3. The addition of polyP to acrylic resin seemed to reduce hydrophobicity of the acrylic resin. PolyP in acrylic resin does not seem to exert a direct antibacterial activity, but rather inhibit attachment of oral bacteria, especially mutans streptococci to saliva-coated acrylic resin. The acrylic resin reduces attachment of streptococci may be due to the decreased hydrophobicity caused by polyP added to the resin. PolyP may be included to acrylic resin to inhibit dental caries which often occurs when removable acrylic resin appliance is placed.

In order to evaluate the sufficient etching time for successful bonding and also minimizing unnecessary mineral loss, the enamel surface roughness analysis was performed using confocal laser scanning microscopy. Sixty extracted sound human molar teeth were imbedded in the center of acrylic cylinder using self-curing clear resin exposing buccal surface, and then polished with series of SiC paper(220, 500, 800, 1000, 2000, 4000 grit). Each specimen was randomly assigned to six groups(N=10). 37% phosphoric acid was applied to the polished tooth surface for 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 seconds respectively and washed with copious water. After the surface roughness analysis, five roughness parameters(Sa, Sq, Sz, Sdr, Ra) were statistically analysed by ANOVA and Duncan post hoc test. We found that the all five parameters had higher roughness value in 30 seconds etching time, especially parameter Sz showed the lowest value in 10 seconds etching time and the highest value in 30 seconds etching time compared with the other etching times(p<0.05).
The static and fatigue characteristics of polyurethane foam cored sandwich structures are investigated. Three types of the specimens with the glass fabric faces and the polyurethane foam core are used; non-stitched. stitched, and stiffened sandwich specimen. Especially additional structural reinforcements with the twisted polyester and glass fiber for thickness direction are made to stitched sandwich structure panel to minimize the delamination of structure which is stitched the upper and lower faces through the core and the resin is impregnated Into stitched fiber with the characteristics of low viscosity of resin at resin flow temperature and cured together with during the curing process. Bending strength of stitched specimen which is 50 mm $50{\times}50{\;}mm$ pitched is improved by 50 % as com-pared with non-stitched specimen and stiffened specimen is improved 10 times more than non-stitched structure. After fatigue testing of $10^6$cycles by 20% of ultimate load under monotonic load, the bending fatigue strength of non-stitched specimen is decreased by 27% of monotonic bending strength, 39% for stitched structure and 20% for stiffened specimen. To verify the aging effect of polyurethane form core, Ultrasonic C-scanning equipment is used to detect the damage of skin laminate alone after fatigue test. From results of UT C-scan images, there is no defect that can be damaged occurred during fatigue test. It is concluded that the decrease of bending strength for foam cored sandwich specimen is caused by the decrease of stiffness due to the aging of polyurethane foam core during fatigue cycles.

Carbonation of concrete is one type of a chemical process. The reaction mechanism is very complex for the case when low-calcium fly ash and blast furnace slag is added. When fly ash and blast furnace slag is used as an admixture in concrete, they improve compressive strength in the long term, permeability and chemical resistance of concrete by a pozzolanic reaction and latent hydraulic property. On the other hand, the pozzolanic reaction of fly ash and latent hydraulic property of the blast furance slag leads to a reduction of the alkalinity of the concrete. It has been pointed out that this will accelerate the carbonation of the concrete and the corrosion of reinforcement steel embedded in the concrete. In order to clarify the effect of fly ash and blast furance slag on the carbonation of concrete, an accelerated carbonation testing of concrete was carried out by varying the conditions of concrete and the initial curing period in water. The test results of accelerated carbonation were compared to the carbonation test results of concrete stored for 15 years in open air, but protected from rain. As a result, the equation for the rate of carbonation based on compressive strength of concrete was proposed.
This study was performed to obtain the basic data which can be applied to improve the early strength of concrete. The results obtained were as follows; 1. In case that water reducing-set accelerating agent was added 0.75% of the weight of cement, the weight of water was reducd 10%. And $CaCl_2$ did nearly not have an effect on the w/c ratio. 2. Compressive strength and tensile strength increased 25%, 43%, respectively, in case that $CaCl_2$ was 2.0% of the weight of cement, and showed 120%, 140%, respectively, in case that water reducing-set accelerating agent was 0.75% of the weight of cement. 3. In case of steam curing at $60^{\circ}C$, the strength increased with the ages. At $100^{\circ}C$, the increase of strength in 1 age was two times as compared with plain concrete. After 7ages, the strength was similer to plain concrete. 4. The relationship between compressive strength and tensile strength was linear and was highly significant in cases of plain concrete, $CaCl_2$ concrete, C-W concrete, steam cured concrete, respectively.
The effects of organic acids mix (0.4%) and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on the storage quality of sliced bacon were investigated. Pork bellies were treated with or without organic acids at the curing stage. The organic acids mix comprised 35% sodium acetate, 25% salt, 15% calcium lactate, 11% trisodium citrate, 7% ascorbate, and 7% citric acid. The cured pork bellies were smoked and packaged with 50% $CO_2$ + 50% $N_2$ (50% $CO_2$-MAP) and 100% $N_2$ (100% $N_2$-MAP), and stored at $5^{\circ}C$ for 14 d. The 50% $CO_2$-MAP showed a higher pH value (p<0.05) up to 10 d, a lower protein deterioration (p<0.05) as measured by volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) from 6 to 14 d, and a higher color value of lightness (CIE $L^*$) compared to 100% $N_2$-MAP. The development of lipid oxidation measured by thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) values seemed to be effectively controlled throughout the storage period in both 50% $CO_2$-MAP and 100% $N_2$-MAP regardless of the application of organic acids. The 50% $CO_2$-MAP inhibited the growth of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria (p<0.05) both in non-added and bacon added with organic acids mix. The 50% $CO_2$-MAP alone seemed to be effective in delaying the growth of bacteria since the use of organic acids mix gave no additional effects. The addition of organic acids mix lowered the pH value (p<0.05), effectively retarded the protein deterioration (p<0.05), and showed a higher color value of lightness (CIE $L^*$) value (p<0.05) and lower color value of redness (CIE $a^*$) value (p<0.05). In conclusion, 50% $CO^2$-MAP showed better quality and self-life of sliced bacon during storage. However, the beneficial effect of organic acids mix was not noticed in the concentration used in this experiment.
Long Fiber-reinforced composites have advantages of excellent production efficiency and formability of complex shapes compared to conventional continuous fiber reinforced composite materials. However, if we need to make complicated composite shapes or to assemble parts made of different materials, a variety of joining methods are needed. In general, long fiber prepreg sheet (LFPS) contains mold release agent to facilitate demolding after thermoforming. Therefore, mechanical fastening is required in addition to the adhesive bonding to get proper joining strength. In this study, we proposed a stainless steel insert for co-cure bonding which cures LFPS and bonds the stainless steel insert through thermoforming process. The wing of the insert which is spread during the thermoforming process induces adhesion and mechanical wedging effect and serves as a hook to resist the pulling force. The burn-out method was used to confirm the unfolded state of the stainless steel insert wings inserted into the composite material. The static pull-out test was performed to quantitatively evaluate the joining strength. From these experimental results, the condition which guarantees the most appropriate joining strength was derived.
It is a general trend everywhere that the uses of vegetable oils are increasing due to the fact that they are effective in curing and preventing symptoms of high blood pressure and various heart failure conditions. At the same time the concept that oxidative rancidity is caused by the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acid moieties whose subsequent decomposition gives rise to various undesirable, sometimes toxic compounds is now well accepted. Linolenic acid (C, 18:3) is one of highly unsaturated and readily oxidizable fatty acid. The content of this essential polyunsaturated fatty acid in perilla seed oil (PSO) was found to be as high as 48% while only 1.5% in sesame seed oil (SSO). In this experiment the oxidative stability of PSO was compared with that of SSO. The experimental test group were as follows: A) Stored at different temperatures, namely $4^{\circ}C,\;30^{\circ}C,$ and $60^{\circ}C,$ B) Stored at room temperature $(20{\pm}5^{\circ}C)$ ; a. protected from sunlight and air, b. exposed to air without sunlight c. exposed to sunlight but protected front air, d. completely exposed to both air and sunlight. The following results were obtained; 1) It was found to be most stable against oxidation to store both PSO and SSO under the low temperature $(4^{\circ}C)$ condition. According to P.V. measurements it was found to be safe to keep both oils up to $30^{\circ}C$ for at least 8 weeks. When exposed to air, sunlight and high temperature $(60^{\circ}C)$, P.V. of PSO reached there peak values, which were much higher than those of SSO. This explains much of its instability as compared to SSO against oxidation. 2) The effect of high temperature $(60^{\circ}C)$ on A.V. was found to be more striking than those of all the other storage conditions. The condition of refrigeration was most effective in keeping A.V. low for both oils as was the case in P.V. 3) For both oils, I.V. decreased throughout the experimental period (8 weeks). The range of decrement was larger for PSO than SSO. 4) There was no significant change in the compositions of fatty acids of SSO caused by various experimental storage conditions. But for PSO the compositions of stearic, oleic and linoleic acid were decreased, whereas linolenic acid was increased proportionally.
Until now rubber industry field has used organic solvent base adhesive, there was always existed a fire risk, variety of quality and harmfulness of human body. To solve this problem we were developed a new adhesive that was maked by raw materials of hydrocarbon series which has the properties of nonvolatile and high flash point. Because of this new adhesive has the properties of nonvolatile and non-harmfulness to the human body, we expected to solve the problems of a fire hazard and the pollution of the environmental. Instead of the rubber binder that is used to a present adhesive, the new idea is adopted in a new type of adhesive. Nonvolatile solvent penetrated to the rubber surface and caused the swelling in rubber surface and as a result of this action, it has the self-adhesive power. In comparision with the present adhesive a new type of adhesive remarkably improved the maintenance time of adhesion and the durability of this adhesive showed similar aspect. Because it did not exhibit a drop of physical properties of rubber which was caused by swelling effect, we estimate that new type adhesive are very stable and not reacted to several rubber additives. While present adhesive appear the crack at cutting surface of curing rubber that caused by gas, new type adhesive not exist these crack.
