  • Admixture compounds for shortening setting time and accelerating early strength development of EVA polymer powder-modified mortars were made by mixing various quick setting agents. As a result, the quick setting agents contribute to strength development of the mortars in the early curing age of 168h or less. In the viewpoint of early strength development of EVA polymer powder-modified mortars, an quick setting agent content of 20$\%$ is recommended. Early strength of EVA polymer powder-modified mortars expresses the excellent strength with 5$\%$, 10$\%$ of rates of polymer mixing. The rate of polymer mixing was able to be adjusted and flexural strength which is a predeterminded initial strength was also able to satisfy 3MPa(s).

  • Cement or lime is generally used to improve the strength of soil. However, bacteria were utilized to produce cementation of loose soils in this study. The microo rganism called Bacillus, and $CaCl_2$ was introduced into loose sand and soft silt and $CaCO_3$ in the voids of soil particles were produced, leading to cementation of soil particles. In this study, loose sand and soft silt typically encountered in Korea were bio-treated with 3 types of bacteria concentration. The cementation (or calcite precipitation) in the soil particles induced by the high concentration bacteria treatment was investigated at 7 days after curing. Based on the results of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) tests and EDX analyses, high concentration bacteria treatment for loose sand was observed to produce noticeable amount of $CaCO_3$, implying a significant cementation of soil particles. It was observed that higher calcium carbonate depositions were observed in poorly graded distribution as compared to well graded distribution. In addition, effectiveness of biogrouting has also been found to be feasible by bio-treatment without any cementing agent.

  • The microcapsule for thermochromism is based on the polymerization reaction between epoxy resin and amine curing agent. The preparation process of microcapsule is based on dissolving or dispersing a hydrophobic core materials[one-dye-black(OBD), bis-phenol A(BPA), cetyl alcohol] in an aqueous solution of gelatin, epoxy resin and isophorondiamine(IPDA) ; the gelatin and IPDA used as a dispersion stabilizer and an hardening agent, respectively. The structures of epoxy resin and microcapsule materials have been analyzed by FT-IR and UV/Vis spectra. The mean diameter and size distribution of microcapsule are 1.46~1.75${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 1.42, respectively. The DSC thermograms of microcapsules indicated 2 kinds of endothermic peaks at 47 and 322$^{\circ}C$. This is possibly corresponding to the melting peak of core material and wall meterial. These microcapsules are applied to the fabric by printing. Complex finished fabric showed a good wear resistance on rubbing test and the print pattern to the cotton fabric showed a reversible thermochromism ; ${\mu}_{max}$ are 580 nm below 4$0^{\circ}C$ and 276.5nm above 4$0^{\circ}C$ in ethanol/water(2/8), respectively.

  • Objective: To evaluate the effects of contamination by either blood or a hemostatic agent on the shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic buttons. Methods: We used 45 freshly extracted, non-carious, impacted third molars that were divided into 3 groups of 15. Each tooth was etched with 37% phosphoric acid gel for 30 s. Human blood or the blood stopper agent was applied to the tooth surface in groups I and II, respectively. Group III teeth were untreated (controls). Orthodontic buttons were bonded to the teeth using light-curing composite resin. After bonding, the SBS of the button was determined using a Universal testing machine. Any adhesive remaining after debonding was assessed and scored according to the modified adhesive remnant index (ARI). ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey's test was used to determine significant differences in SBS and Fisher's exact test, to determine significant differences in ARI scores among groups. Results: ANOVA indicated a significant difference between groups (p < 0.001). The highest SBS values were measured in group III ($10.73{\pm}0.96$ MPa). The SBS values for teeth in groups I and II were significantly lower than that of group III (p < 0.001). The lowest SBS values were observed in group I teeth ($4.17{\pm}1.11$ MPa) (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Contamination of tooth surfaces with either blood or hemostatic agent significantly decreased the SBS of orthodontic buttons. When the contamination risk is high, it is recommended to use the blood stopper agent when bonding orthodontic buttons on impacted teeth.

  • Inorganic stiffening agents were prepared by mixing paper sludge incineration ash, blast furnace slag fine powder quicklime, anhydrous gypsum and fly ash. The main components of the solidifying agent developed for sludge treatment were SiO, $Al_2O_3$, $TiO_2$, $Fe_2O_3$, $Mn_2O_3$, CaO, MgO, $Na_2O$, $K_2O$, $P_2O$, and $SO_3$. Unlike cement, the developed solidifying agent did not contain $Cr^{6+}$, which is known as a carcinogen. Heavy metals and oil contaminated soil were mixed with solidifying agent and cured for 7 days and the heavy metal content was below the environmental standard. Sewage sludge cake, food waste and solidifying agent were mixed with each other, and after 7 days curing, soil component test showed that the heavy metal content was below the environmental standard. After mixing the sludge, solidifying agent and additive mixture into the beaker, the ammonia concentration was measured to be 0 after 3 days.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dispersion degree of particles using a nanoindentation test for titanium oxide nanoparticles/epoxy resin nanocomposites. Thus, the effects of the particle size and weight fraction, dispersion agent, and position of the sample on the modulus and degree of particle dispersion in the nanocomposites were investigated. As a result, the dispersion degree of large particles was found to be better than that of smaller particles in composites. It could be found that the aggregation or agglomeration of small particles with large surface energy occurred more easily in nanocomposites because of the large specific surface area. The moduli of the upper side of the film-shaped sample obtained from a nanoindentation test were low scattering, while the values for the bottom side were high scattering. Thus, the dispersion situation of the nanoparticles on the upper side of film-shaped samples could be considered to be better than that for the bottom side. This could be concluded due to the non-uniform nanoparticle dispersion in the same sample. The modulus obtained from nanoindentation test increased slightly with the content of nanoparticles and increased with the indented depth for the same sample. The latter is presumably due to the increase in the accumulated particles facing the indenter with the indented depth. The nanoindentation test was found to be a useful method to evaluate the dispersion status of nanoparticles in nanocomposites.

  • The feasibility study of using converter slag as a solidifying agent of digested sewage sludge cake has been performed. The availability of converter slag as solidifying agent has been investigated by several trial tests. Based on the trial test results, the optimum mixing ratios of sludge cake and solidification additive are estabilished. Finally the solidification characters of sludge cake are elucidated by SEM and EDS. It is ascertained that converter slag with a small amount of quicklime enhences the solidification. From the result of pH test, overall pH of specimens tends to decrease slowly with curing time. After solidifying specimens had been cured for 7 days, these are water-cured for 24 hours. The weight and strength of all the specimens are nearly the same regardless of the mixed ratios of solidifying agent. The result of leaching tests for four heavy metal ions, Cd, $Cr^{6+}$, Pb and Cu show that the leaching strength becomes below the decision criteria of the specific wastes, respectively. The SEM observation of the delicate structure shows that needlelike crystals appear after solidification which are not observed before. From the EDS analysis, it is found that the main ingredients of needlelike crystals are Ca, Si, Al and O.

  • PURPOSE. This study evaluated the bond strength between porcelain denture teeth (Bioblend 43D) and four different polymerized denture resins (Lucitone 199, Palapress, Acron MC, Triad) with and without a bonding agent and after four different types of surface treatment (polished, HF etched, sandblasted, air-abraded). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Central incisor porcelain denture teeth were divided into 32 groups of 5 each. Tensile bond strength (MPa) was determined using a testing machine at crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Mean and standard deviation are listed. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA. Means were compared by Tukey-Kramer intervals at 0.05 significance level. RESULTS. All surface treatment increased bond strength compared to polished surface and the highest bond strength was found with Palapress resin with etched porcelain surface (8.1 MPa). Bonding agent improved the bond strength of all denture resins to porcelain teeth. Superior bonding was found with Palapress and air-abraded porcelain (39 MPa). CONCLUSION. Resins with different curing methods affect the bond strength of porcelain teeth to denture bases. Superior bonding was found with auto-polymerized resin (Palapress). Application of ceramic primer and bonding agent to porcelain teeth with and without surface treatment will improve the bond strength of all denture resins to porcelain teeth.

  • To improve the interfacial bonding of carbon fiber-nylon 6 composite, carbon fiber(CF) were oxidized by nitric acid treatment, and two types of graft polymer(GP) of nylon 6-g-polyacrylamide (PAAm) -water dispersable GP(WDGP) and m-cresol solu ble GP(CSGP) were treated as coupling agents. Introduction of polar groups such as -COOH, -OH, etc, on the surface of the oxidized CF was confirmed by IR spectra. The stem polymer of nylon 6 in the coupling agent (GP) could be compatible with'matrix nylon 5, and the grafted branch of PAAm on GP could react to the polar groups on the oxidized CF in composite. The interfacial strength was measured by the transverse tensile test to the fiber direction for single CF embedded nylon 6 film especially prepared and by the pull-out test method. The interfacial strength of the composite reinforced with oxidized CF is greater than that reinforced with unoxidized CF. The interfacial strength of the composite was increased by treatment of coupling agents(GPs) considerably, and the increasing tendency by the WDGP is greater than that by the CSGP. The optimum conditions of coupling agent treatment are as follows: the concentration, adsorption tlme of GP, and curing temperature are 2%, 20 minutes, and $170^{\circ}$, respectively.
