  • Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the effects of cyclosporine-A (CsA) on linear growth in pediatric patients with steroid-dependent (SDNS) or resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS). Methods: Thirty-five pediatric patients with SDNS or SRNS undergoing glucocorticoid (GC) and/or CsA treatment were retrospectively reviewed. Seventeen patients were treated with GC alone and 18 were treated with GC and CsA. The cumulative doses of GC and CsA were quantified (mg/kg/day). Linear growth during the follow-up period was defined as the difference in Z-score between the initial and final height according to the follow-up period (${\Delta}$ height Z score/year). The associations between linear growth and clinical parameters were analyzed. Results: The linear growth of patients in the two groups was not significantly different (P=0.262). The ${\Delta}$ height Z score/year did not show a significant correlation with the cumulative doses of CsA, but was negatively correlated with the cumulative dose of GC and positively correlated with the Z score for height at the time of diagnosis. Conclusion: In children with SDNS or SRNS undergoing GC therapy, added CsA treatment may not have harmful effects on linear growth.

  • Background: In this prospective cohort study, we investigated the association between fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs) in meconium as biomarkers of prenatal ethanol exposure and growth deficits, as birth outcomes, that constitute several of the key cardinal features of fetal alcohol syndrome. Methods: A total of 157 meconium samples were collected from enrolled infants within 24 hours of birth, and nine FAEEs were quantified using liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. The relationships between cumulative concentrations of nine species of FAEEs in meconium and birth parameters of growth (age-sex-specific centiles of head circumference [HC], weight, and length) and respective and combined birth outcomes of growth deficits (HC ${\leq}10th$ centile, weight ${\leq}10th$ centile, and length ${\leq}10th$ centile) were determined. Results: Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that higher cumulative concentrations of meconium FAEEs correlated with elevated risks for HC and length, both, 10th percentile or less (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.94; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.12-7.74; P = 0.029) and HC and weight and length, all of them, 10th percentile or less (aOR, 3.27; 95% CI, 1.12-9.59; P = 0.031). Conclusion: The elevated cumulative FAEEs in meconium were associated with combined growth deficits at birth, specifically HC and length, both, 10th percentile or less, which might be correlated with detrimental alcohol effects on fetal brain and bone development, suggesting a plausible alcohol-specific pattern of intrauterine growth restriction.

  • A software growth model, a mathematical model describing the growth behavior of a software system during the evolution process, enables us to predict the future system size and incremental erfort required to meet the planned system size. This paper first introduces a software growth model defined with respect to the cumulative incremental effort. It was assumed that the incremental growth of a software system is proportional to the incremental effort and function of the system size is suggested as a system complexity and then applied to real data for its validation. such a system complexity additionally provides us with a measure for complexity comparison. since the measure is independent of the system size, it is useful for comparing complexities of software systems of different size.

  • Photosynthetically active radiation flux density (PPFD) and daily light integral (DLI) values related to plant photosynthesis were obtained using the sunlight time and insolation data points in the agricultural weather sensor data for Jinan-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea from 2016 to 2020. The objective was to optimize the photo-environmental conditions for cultivating ginseng. The range of average monthly sunshine duration was 395.5-664.1 min, with the longest duration observed in June. The range of average annual accumulated daily insolation was 11.98-17.65 MJ·m-2. The range of average daily external DLI calculated from the insolation and solar time data was 22.3-36.1 mol·m-2·d-1, and the annual cumulative DLI was 8,156-13,175 mol·m-2·d-1. Both the insolation and DLI values were the highest in 2016 and lowest in 2020. Based on the PPFD required for ginseng growth (111-185 µmol·m-2·s-1), the monthly average daily DLI and monthly cumulative DLI were 3.51-5.87 and 82-228 mol·m-2·d-1, respectively. The range of five-year average value for the external monthly cumulative DLI was 298-1,459 mol·m-2·d-1, and the monthly cumulative DLI values when a black double shading film and blue-white shading film were applied were 101-496 and 36-175 mol·m-2·d-1, respectively. A comparative analysis of DLI values indicated that shading was required to ginseng growth throughout the year under natural light. When the black double shading film was used, shading was required from March to October. When the blue-white shading film was applied from April to August, (i.e., the period with active ginseng growth) the appropriate DLI for ginseng growth could be continuously maintained. Regional weather differences due to climate change are gradually increasing, and even in one region, monthly and cumulative DLI values are different every year. Therefore, in order to implement a precise agricultural environment for ginseng cultivation, precise analysis and continuous research using agricultural weather sensor big data is required.

  • To investigate the growth promoting effects of an herbal medicine formulation (HM-10), Sprague Dawley (SD) male rats (3 weeks old) were divided into 3 groups (8 rats/group). The control group was given a daily oral administration of saline, and the treatment groups, HM-1 and HM-2, were given daily administrations of HM-10 (500 and 1,000 mg/kg BW, respectively). The cumulative tibial bone growth of the HM-1 and HM-2 groups (22.5 and 20.8 mm, respectively), and their cumulative femur bone growth (19.4 and 18.2 mm, respectively), were significantly different compared to the control group (7.5 mm of tibial growth and 7.7 mm of femur growth) (p<0.05). Lastly, the growth hormone levels of the HM-1 and HM-2 groups (1.70 and 1.79 ng/mL, respectively), as well as their insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels (165.1 and 171.7 ng/mL, respectively) showed significant differences compared to the control (0.93 ng/mL of growth hormone and 125.6 ng/mL of IGF-1) (p<0.05).

  • Responses of the rumen fungus, Neocallimastix frontalis RE1, to long chain fatty acid (LCFA) were evaluated by measuring gas production, filter paper (FP) cellulose digestion and polysaccharidase enzyme activities. LCFA (stearic acid, $C_{18:0}$; oleic acid, $C_{18:1}$; linoleic acid, $C_{18:2}$ and linolenic acid, $C_{18:3}$) were emulsitied by ultrasonication under anaerobic condition, and added to the medium. When N frontalis RE1 was grown in culture with stearic, oleic and linoleic acid, the cumulative gas production, gas pool size, FP cellulose digestion and enzymes activities significantly (p<0.05) increased at some incubation times(especially, exponential phases of fungal growth, 48~120 h of incubation) relative to that for control cultures. However, the addition of linolenic acid strongly inhibited all of the investigated parameters up to 120 h incubation, but not after 168 and 216 h of incubation. These results indicated that stearic, oleic and linoleic acids tended to have great stimulatory effects on fungal cellulolysis, whereas linolenic acid caused a significant (p<0.05) inhibitory effects on the cellulolysis by the rumen fungus. These results are the first report of the effect of LCFAs on the ruminal fungi. Further research is needed to identify the mode of action of LCFAs on fungal strains and to verify whether or not ruminal fungi have ability to hydrate unsaturated LCFAs to saturated FAs. There was high correlation between cumulative in vitro gas production and fungal growth (94.78%), FP cellulose degradation (96.34%), CMCase activity(90.86%) or xylanase activity (87.67%). Thus measuring of cumulative gas production could be a useful tool for evaluating fungal growth and/or enzyme production by ruminal fungi.

  • High temperature low cycle fatigue shows that cycle-dependent crack growth owing to cyclic plastic deformation occurred simultaneosly with time-dependent crack growth owing to intergranular deformation. Consequently, to estimate crack growth rate uniquely, many to investigators have proposed various kinds of parameters and theories but these could not produce satisfactory results. Therefore the goal of this study is focused on prediction of crack growth rate using predominant damage rule, linear cumulative damage rule and transitional parameter ${\Delta}J_c/{\Delta}J_f$. On the basis of these sinusoidal loading waveform at 600$^{\circ}C$ and 700$^{\circ}C$.

  • Purpose: Compared to the rapid growth rate of the domestic automotive LED industry so far, the predictive analysis method for demand forecasting or market outlook was insufficient. Accordingly, product characteristics are analyzed through the life trend of LEDs for automotive exterior lamps and the relative strengths of p and q using the Bass model. Also, future demands are predicted. Methods: We used sales data of a leading company in domestic market of automotive LEDs. Considering the autocorrelation error term of this data, parameters m, p, and q were estimated through the modified estimation method of OLS and the NLS(Nonlinear Least Squares) method, and the optimal method was selected by comparing prediction error performance such as RMSE. Future annual demands and cumulative demands were predicted through the growth curve obtained from Bass-NLS model. In addition, various nonlinear growth curve models were applied to the data to compare the Bass-NLS model with potential market demand, and an optimal model was derived. Results: From the analysis, the parameter estimation results by Bass-NLS obtained m=1338.13, p=0.0026, q=0.3003. If the current trend continues, domestic automotive LED market is predicted to reach its maximum peak in 2021 and the maximum demand is $102.23M. Potential market demand was $1338.13M. In the nonlinear growth curve model analysis, the Gompertz model was selected as the optimal model, and the potential market size was $2864.018M. Conclusion: It is expected that the Bass-NLS method will be applied to LED sales data for automotive to find out the characteristics of the relative strength of q/p of products and to be used to predict current demand and future cumulative demand.

  • For development of an integrated calorimetric bio-reactor to measure the metabolic heat dissipated during cell growth, a 5 liter jar fermenter was modified to measure the pulse length of automatic temperature control signals to set heater on and off, and the to send them to computer to calculate the cumulative heat supplied. Cumulative heats for the calorimetric reactor in the absence of cell growth, were measured with varying conditions. The heat loss by the aeration was 30.9 kJ/vvm and the loss to ambient air was 10.5 kJ/L/hr/$^{\circ}C$. Cumulative heat was measued within $\pm$0.2% when testing with a small electri heater submerged in the reactor. Metabolic heat was measured to be 0.76 and 0.76 and 11.4kJ per g consumption of glucose during cultivation of S. cerevisiae and E. coli, respectively.

  • In this study, cancer incidence data were assessed to provide various rates of five year age groups for a given year, lying between two census years. The individual exponential growth rate method is most useful in both population-based and non-population cased cancer registries in India to estimate the population by five yearly age groups and also find the rates of crude rates, age standard rates and cumulative rates. This method has been shown to endure from bias and often results sacrificing the overall growth rate and correction factor must be needful in five year age group population to maintain it. A second method, the difference distribution method is also able to maintain the overall growth rate and overcome the bias in estimation of five yearly age group populations. From this point of view these methods serving a new technique for population estimation by five yearly age groups for inter census years.
