  • Cumulative trauma disorders (CTD) refer to a category of physical signs and symptoms due to chronic musculoskeletal injuries where the antecedents appear to be related to some aspect of repetitive work which can be found commonly in modern industries. This paper describes impacts of CTD on modern industry and summarizes recent resent research efforts and suggests an ergonomic program to prevent incident of CTD in hand-intensive industry.

  • It is difficult to estimate the effective factors upon Cumulative Trauma Disorders in real workplace because those are developed by combination of various risk factors for time. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate relative level of CTDs risk factors such as task-related factors, anthropometric factors, joint deviation factors and personal factors using fuzzy linear regression models. And the models are built corresponding to each category with the survey data from telephone operators. The coefficient of fuzzy models are described as the relative level of variable to present risk factors upon CTDs.

A New Form of Public Participation in Science and Technology : Two Cases of Doing 'Undone Science' in Korea (과학기술 시민참여의 새로운 유형: 수행되지 않은 과학 하기 -한국의 두 가지 사례 - 아토피와 근골격계 질환-)

  • The need and rationale for public participation in science and technology is widely acknowledged in academic communities and policy circles. In addition to institutionalized forms of participation, some STS researchers have paid attention to spontaneous forms of public participation, particularly with regard to social movement. This paper aims to explore a new form of public participation, which had been relatively neglected in STS studies. For this purpose, in this paper we examine environmental health issues and cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) debates as examples of doing "undone science" in Korea. Our focus will be specifically on how environmental organizations and trade unions have both succeeded in making those issues as research and policy agenda for both scientific community and policy makers. In a concluding section, a couple of suggestions for further research are proposed.

  • Cumulative trauma disorders(CTDs) have been a growing problems for US and European industries with higher incidence rate every year. The increase and their associated costs has led companies to form committes and implement programs to address this problem. In our country, we have just started to recognize and to work on the problems in industry. This study conducted an ergonomic analysis for typical jobs of ship building industry which was not usually surveyed for CTD problem. A baseline CTD checklist which was supposed to do a risk assessment was developed and applied in this study. Initially, we considered five major parts in the checklist which consisted of personal, frequency, posture, force, and miscellaneous information. Most jobs in ship building industry were much different from typical assembly work and VDT work that have been major part of the previous CTD studies. Specifically, job characteristics in terms of frequency and posture were quite different. There were relatively long cycle time, awkward postures for whole body (not just for upper extremities). Also, CTD risk scores based on checklist were a lot higher than the scores for VDT jobs which was a case of preceding application of the checklist. Specifically, grinding jobs turned out to be the most risky one in terms of CTDs. In conclusion, usual CTD prevention guidelines are not likely to he effective in this type of industry. An individual job based interventions are strongly suggested to have a good control of CTD problems in ship building industry.

  • The objectives of this study was to investiage the effects of sitting posture on carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) continues to be one of the most widely publicized maladies of the cumulative trauma disorder. Many studies have reported a positive association between CTS and highly repetitive work, high force, and poor posture. High force and repetitive work have especially been associated with CTS, but the evidence for work being a primary cause of CTS is strongest when these factors are combined. In addition to carpal tunnel syndrome, hand, wrist, and other disorders are attributed to these work-related movements. Such disorders are referred to as repetitive stress injuries, cumulative trauma disorder, overuse syndromes, and chronic upper limb pain syndrome. Incorrect posture also may play a role in the development of CTS in people who work at a computer and other types of keyboards. The tendency to roll the shoulders forward, round the lower back, and thrust the chin forward can shorten the neck and shoulder muscles, compressing nerves in the neck. This, in turn, can affect the wrist, fingers, and hand. The treatment and prevention of carpal tunnel syndrome continue to be approached with a segmental view of the human body. For example, the most common ergonomic solution for carpal tunnel syndrome associated with keyboard use is to keep the wrists in a neutral position by using a wrist rest in front of the keyboard and good sitting posture.

  • Recently, as work strength is deepened, as well, labor environments is changed, simple and iterative worker's Cumulative Trauma Disorders(CTD) is gradually being increased. Accordingly, this study was designed to represent its system design to carry out their iterative and simple task by machine through the difference of muscle fatigue between worker on handling line and worker under the work environments by Air Balance System for the purpose of analyzing their muscle fatigue test according to fulfillment of iterative and simple task. From the result of this study, with regard to the comparison of muscle fatigue between work on handling line and work on automation line on the occasion of refractory brick loading, their muscle fatigue extent under the work environments by Air Balance system was lower than it of handling by AMEG(64.1%), MF(65.3%), MPF(64.3%), ZCR(63.6%) respectively. And also, generally there showed similar transfer at the aspect of muscle mobilization. In other words, we can say that work environments by Air Balance System is beneficial at the aspect of alleviating works' fatigue extent on handling line. As well, the result of this study shows that worker's exposure to Cumulative Trauma Disorders(CTD) is relatively low.

  • Occupational cumulative traumas (CTDs) are becoming one of leading ailments in industrialized worl $d^{(1.2)}$. The degree of muscle fatigue is important parameter to understand cause of occupational cumulative trauma disorders. To quantify degree of muscle fatigue, muscle EMG activity was measured during isometric and dynamic contractions(repetitive concentric/eccentric muscle contraction) and its analyzed data, such as RMS, median frequency, and median power were compared when the muscle was fresh and exhausted. When muscle become fatigue, it was observed that median frequency decreased and median power and RMS increased However, based on overall prolonged observation, median frequency increased and median power and RMS decreased. Therefore it was concluded that shifting patterns of RMS, median frequency, and median power values can be used as parameter to evaluate degree of muscle fatigue even in dynamic muscle contraction.

  • When picking up cargo, workers manually load and unload the cargo. Workers have different intensity of work depending on the amount and weight of cargo. In particular, as the intensity of manual work increases, workers are exposed to cumulative traumatic diseases. A manual for picking safety work for workers cargo handling in the distribution center is required. In this study, the worker's picking safety work based on the cargo volume and weight was presented as an experimental design model. Like the research results, the disease begins when the worker feels the number of pains presented by the model.
