  • Using semiotic analysis, visual images in selected postmodern fashion advertisements were analyzed. Semiotics is the study of the structure of the meanings of signs. Semiotic analysis involves deconstruction, and thus draws on the researcher’s value-mediated introspection and subjective interpretation of texts i.e., ads). Through deconstruction, culturally assigned meanings, which represent consumers and culture, were revealed. Postmodern characteristics including open interpretation, use of the human body as an object, multi page format, new mood, black and white scenes, use of real people, and new ideology were identified in the ads. The importance of analyzing visual images in fashion ads was stressed in the findings of the study, as was the importance of educating consumers on how to read the visual images.

  • In order to maintain and evaluate the adequate humidity and temperature of a museum, the data of these should be periodically monitored and accumulated. For this purpose, We have designed the interpretation method of charts of the widely used thermo hydrorecorder at the museum, and developed the computer-based program (name of the program : HATH interpretation program). This method is as follows; The recording of thermo hydrorecorder(model ; Sato R-704) Input a through scanner (UMAX type), and was transformed into numerical value and was processed the statistics by HATH interpretation program. Output can be present the numerical value and the graph which are classified by a day, a month, and a year. By this method, the humidity and temperature data which were taken from 12points in the exhibition case, storage and outdoor of the Ho-Am art Museum in 1995 were processed. At the results, its ability for fast processing, management and analysis of the data was proved to be excellent.

  • The purpose of this study is to apply iconology to discover the symbolic system of imaginary animals focused on four representative auspicious animals in Korean folk paintings. Study methods included literature review of folk paintings, iconological analytics books, and articles. A total of 16 folk paintings of four auspicious animals in the Joseon Dynasty were analyzed using Panofsky's iconology. The four auspicious animals were Yong(dragon), Bonghwang(the eastern version of the phoenix), Shingoo (divine turtle), and Kirin(one-horned combination of a dragon and horse). According to iconological analysis, Yong is a typical symbol of royal authority, a deity of water as an object of respect with a remarkable talent of transformation, and in iconographical interpretation, represents reverence for transcendent power. Bonhwang is the symbol of a king, sun worship, the emblem of nobility and integrity, and in iconographical interpretation, the psychic bing in the sky. Shingoo is fortune prophecy, longevity and immortality, an envoy of deity, and according to iconographical interpretation, the organic view of the world. Kirin is a divine benign creature, a symbol of talent and honor, mediator between sky and earth, and in iconographical interpretation, an expression of Confucian ideology. This study produced three results. First, the four auspicious animals projected the human hope to overcome human limitations through divine creatures with mythical abilities. Second, they reflected everyday common hopes and values of pursuing fortunes and happiness. Third, the four auspicious animals' iconology was not independent of each other; it seemed to be common to and combined with each other.

The method of this study is showed the method fo fashion culture, after it was examined that the trends of popular cultural method, the type of Korean popular culture discussion, and the relationship of fashion and popular culture. The results of this study are following as ; 1. Analysis of this study are structuralism stand and culturalism stand, and the application of criticism about the cultural technology in a new stand by means of the composition of Gramscic, A and Foucault. 2. Application of the ethnographic access method as anthroppological approach method about C. Geertz'culture. This si to describe and interpret the practice of subject through directive observation and conduct on a spot, thus is likely to be useful in the fashion study. 3. It needs a historical access method for that purpose, If it applicate Weber's methodology, it will have the use of both meaning interpretation and explanation of cause and effect on the use of both meaning interpretation and explanation of cause and effect on the basis of realistic conditions (historical data), and would appear that the peculiar apportunity of mental (cultural) progressional process became definitive explanation. 4. It must be mad up of the discussion (which is) based on the durability of tradition and culture. It is undeniable that the discussion, which related to popular culture up to the present, showed the disconnectedness of the past tradition and culture, and naturally accepts it's connection to epistemology. The cultural study is a theory interested in what it brings about, what way it's organized and what way it's used. The research of the fashion's connection to popular culture is composed of such topic ; how fashion is produces, how it is consumed, and then, the proposition which is concerned in what meaning it produce is made up of. The regulation of the realm of this research will be to help a researcher explain where to begin and how to do it. Although this cultural study method is more or less quantitative, or despite the expense of the accuracy of statistical analysis, this means that such method of cultural research needs to give attention to both aspects of phenomena and basic problems.

  • Recently, rates of depression and suicide of adolescents in industrialized countries, including Korea, were rapidly increasing. Adolescent depression was often associated with anxiety disorder, eating disorder, attention deficits hyperactivity/disruptive behavior disorder. and suicidal attempts. Epidemiological data about depression and suicide of adolescents are reviewed. Psychological theories of depression and suicide are integrated in terms of a control theory interpretation. Issues about 'relationships between depression and anxiety' 'relationships between depression and suicide' 'the reason why rates of depression and suicide are rapidly increasing at adolescence' 'the reason why the different prevalence of depression between female and male is conspicuous at adolescence' and 'Korean culture associated with depression and suicide of adolescents' are discussed in terms of the revised control theory interpretation.

  • The objectives of this study were to measure the preference and purchase intention on Korean traditional motifs and to investigate the relationship among preference, purchase intention, and sensibility. The subjects consisted of 217 male and 351 female US undergraduate students. The experimental materials used in this study were 48 stimuli and a questionnaire, composed of 7-point semantic differential scales of 17 bi-polar adjectives. The data were analyzed by ANOVA, Duncan's multiple range test, Regression, and t-test. The major findings were as follows; First, interpretation type and application object had significant effects on the preference, while category and interpretation type had significant effects on the purchase intension. The application of Korean traditional motifs for pattern design was preferred to their application for clothing design. Decorative type was found to be more related to the preference and purchase intention than the other interpretation types of realistic, stylized and abstract types. The purchase intention on crain motif was lower than the other categories of lotus and cloud motifs. Second, in overall, the preference on Korean traditional motifs was higher than purchase intention. Third, the preference and purchase intention were affected mainly by 'Quality' image, a component of sensibility, followed by 'Cheerfulness' image, but not affected by 'Simplicity' and 'Modernity' image.

  • The purpose of this study is to prove an importance of systemic analysis paradigm to interpret fashion make-up. This research employed 'paradigm for interpretation of fashion make-up signs' theory to analyze data. This theory consists of three steps to interpret the meaning of a work: (1) recognition of form, (2) analysis of connotation meanings, and (3) analysis of symbolic meanings and communication. The results of this study were as follows. Jean Paul Gaultier's eye make-up uses a square pattern that mostly consists of the color black. He presents a Glam Rock image by using rimmed make-up that portrays an avant-garde and a nonmainstream culture. Jean Paul Gaultier's make-up was showing black color and square eye pattern and was presenting Glam Rock image and was a rimmed make-up meaning a nonmainstream culture and Avant-garde symbolically. Chanel's make-up emphasizes the eyehole with the rimmed technique by applying the make-up of Marchesa Casati and including non-popularity, Limited Marketing symbolically. Christian Dior's make-up applies the representative make-up of Joan of Arc and Siouxsie sioux and also uses rimmed make-up to portray the meaning of religion persecution, the dark-ages militarism and including Humanism symbolically.

  • Negative Stripping Construction in English involves the disjunction but, the adverb not, and a constituent NP. This construction is an incomplete sentence although it delivers a complete sentential meaning. Interpretation of this construction may be ambiguous in that the constituent NP can either be construed as the subject, or as the complements including the object. To generate such sentences and resolve the issue of ambiguity, we propose a construction-based analysis under direct interpretation approach, rejecting previous analyses based on deletion approaches. In so doing, we suggest a negative stripping construction rule that can account for ambiguous meaning. This rule further can enable us to explain syntactic structures and readings of Negative Stripping Construction.
