  • Pen-input displays, such as LCD tablets and tablet PCs, are already popular for its usability in CAD design, in particular. in concept design phase. We propose an intuitive B-Spline modification scheme that can be used for the CAD systems targeting for such devices. Differently from the control point based modification schemes for the B-splines, our scheme relates user pen marking to determining the final shape of the target curve and surface. This, eventually, reduces time for interacting with the shape parameters (i.e., by control points or direct manipulators), which has been regarded as an unavoidable routine tasks for design. To prove its usability, we made an experiments with selected subjects who have been working for industrial design.

  • We introduce a method of estimating an unknown failure rate function based on sample data. We estimate failure rate function by a function s from a space of cubic splines constrained to be linear (or constant) in tails using maximum likelihood estimation. The number of knots are determined by Bayesian Information Criterion(BIC). Examples using simulated data are used to illustrate the performance of this method.

  • The purpose of format conversion is to convert a wide range of personal computer video formats into a target format. Circuits for the conversion have been developed by means of interpolation techniques, such as zero-order interpolation, bilinear interpolation, and bisigmoidal interpolation. This paper proposes a scan converter using cubic splines. The converter was modeled in VHDL on Max+PlusII and implemented with an FPGA chip. The circuit gives much better conversion performance than a scan converter with zero-order or linear interpolation.

  • An algorithm for representing the cubic spline interpolation of differentiable functions by a fuzzy system is presented in this paper. The cubic B-spline functions which form a basis for the interpolation function are used as the fuzzy sets for input fuzzification. The ordinal number of the coefficient cKL in the list of the coefficient cij's as sorted in increasing order, is taken to be the output fuzzy set number in the (k, l) th entry of the fuzzy rule table. Spike functions are used for the output fuzzy sets, with cij's as support boundaries after they are sorted. An algorithm to compute the support boundaries explicitly without solving the matrix equation involved is included, along with a few properties of the fuzzy rule matrix for the designed fuzzy system.

  • The area of gear dynamics has recently been the focus of many studies. A new tooth profile modification was proposed by author for reducing vibration and noise of involute gears. A comparative dynamic analysis of the gear drive with the involute tooth and the modified tooth profile(using cubic splines) is performed to the unuformal transmission error reduces the gear vibration and noise due to less dynamic tooth load variation during the meshing cycle. This work also include a gear design process by the meaning of a practical approach, such as Win95 based simulation program with all using basic geardesign variables. Especially this program enables gear designers to dynamic analysis based on G.U.I.

  • This paper presents a real-time GPU (graphics processing unit) ray casting scheme for rendering isosurfaces of BCC (body-centered cubic) volume datasets. A quartic spline field is built using the 7-direction box-spline filter accompanied with a quasi-interpolation prefilter. To obtain an interactive rendering speed on the graphics hardware, the shader code was optimized to avoid lookup table and conditional branches and to minimize data fetch overhead. Compared to previous implementations, our work outperforms the comparable one by more than 20% and the rendering quality is superior than others.

  • This paper describes a three-dimensional reference trajectory generation method for giving commands to an unmanned air vehicle (UAV). The trajectory is a set of consecutive curves with constant acceleration during each interval and passing through via-points at specified times or speeds. The functional inputs are three-dimensional positions and times (or speeds) at via-points, and velocities at both boundaries. Its output is the time series of position values satisfying the piecewise constant acceleration condition. To be specific, the shape of the trajectory, known as the path, is first represented by splines using third degree polynomials. A numeric algorithm is then suggested, which can overcome the demerits of cubic spline method and promptly generate a piecewise constant acceleration trajectory from the given path. To show the effectiveness of the present scheme, trajectory generation cases were treated, and their speed calculation errors were evaluated.

  • The study is to investigate the free vibration of antisymmetric angle-ply conical shells having non-uniform sinusoidal thickness variation. The arbitrarily varying thickness is considered in the axial direction of the shell. The vibrational behavior of shear deformable conical shells is analyzed for three different support conditions. The coupled differential equations in terms displacement and rotational functions are obtained. These displacement and rotational functions are invariantly approximated using cubic spline. A generalized eigenvalue problem is obtained and solved numerically for an eigenfrequency parameter and an associated eigenvector of spline coefficients. The vibration characteristic of the shells is examined for cone angle, aspect ratio, sinusoidal thickness variation, layer number, stacking sequence, and boundary conditions.
