  • This paper studies the mechanical behaviors of Sn-3.5Ag solder joint against substrate(such as Au/Ni/Cu, Au/cu, Ni/Cu and Cu pad) after induction heating, a new soldering method. It was found that the solder bump formation depends on the time and current of the induction heating system. Also the heating value of the solder bump were found to vary with respect to the thermal conductivity of the pads on the substrate. In case of Au/Ni/Cu pad and Au/Cu pad, solder bump's shear strength were high for the heating time of $1.5{\sim}2sec$. For Ni/Cu pad, solder bump's shear strength were found to increase with time increment.

  • In the present study, the wettability and interfacial tension between (bare Cu, electroless Ni/cu, immersion Au/Ni/Cu) substrates and indium solder were investigated as a function of soldering temperature, types of flux. The wettability of In solder increased with soldering temperature and solid content of flux. The wettability of In solder was affected by the substrate metal finish used, i.e., nickel, gold and copper. On the bare Cu substrate, In solder wet better than any of the substrate metal finishes tested. Intermetallic compound formation between liquid solder and substrate reduced the interfacial energy and improved wettability. For the identification of intermetallic compounds, X-Ray Diffraction(LRD) were employed. Experimental results showed that the intermetallic compounds, such as Cu11In9 and In27Ni10 are observed f3r different substrates respectively. The wetting kinetics is investigated by measuring wetting time with the wetting balance technique. The activation energy of wetting calculated for the In solder/cu substrate and In solder/electroless Au/Ni/Cu substrate are 36.13 and 27.36 kJ/mol, respectively.

  • We fabricated Ni-based alloy substrates for YBCO coated conductor using powder metallurgy. Tungsten and copper were selected as alloy elements due to their mutual solubility to the base element of nickel. The alloying elements were mixed with nickel using ball milling and dried in air. The powder mixtures were packed in a rubber mold, cold isostatic pressed 200 MPa and made into rods. The compacted rods were sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours for densification. It was confirmed by neutron diffraction experiment that W and Cu atoms made complete solid solution with Ni. Lattice constant of nickel alloy increased by $0.004{\AA}$ for 1at. $\%$ W in Ni-W alloy, $0.0006{\AA}$ for 1 at. $\%$ Cu in Ni-W-Cu alloy.

  • Removal of Cr, Ni and Cu impurities on Si surfaces using remote plasma-excited hydrogen was investigated. Si surfaces were contaminated intentionally by acetone with low purity. To determine the optimum process condition, remote plasma-excited hydrogen cleaning was conducted for various rf-powers and plasma exposure times. After remote plasma-excited hydrogen cleaning, Si surfaces were analyzed by Total X-ray Reflection Fluorescence(TXRF), Surface Photovoltage(SPV) and Atomic Forece Microscope(AFM). The concentrations of Cr, Ni and Cu impurities were reduced and the minority carrier lifetime increased after remote plasma-excited hydrogen. Also RMS roughness decreased by more than 30% after remote plasma-excited hydrogen cleaning. AFM analysis results also show that remote plasma-excited hydrogen cleaning causes no damage to the Si surface. TXRF analysis results show that remote plasma-excited hydrogen cleaning is effective in eliminating metallic impurities from Si surface only if it is performed under an optimum process conditions. The removal mechanism of the Cr, Ni and Cu impurities using remote plasma-excited hydrogen treatments is proposed to be the lift-off during removal of underlying chemical oxides.

  • The tridentate schiff base, salicylidene imino-o-thiolbenzene, has been synthetized from salicylaldehyde and o-amino thiolbenzene by Duff reaction. The schiff base has been reacted with Cu(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II), to form new complexes; Cu(II)$[C_{13}H_9ONS]{\cdot}3H_2O$, Ni(II)$[C_{13}H_9ONS]{\cdot}3H_2O,\;Zn(II)[C_{13}H_9ONS]{\cdot}3H_2O$ It appears that the Cu(II)-complex has tetra-coordinated configuration with the schiff base and one molecule of water, while the Ni(II) and Zn(II)-complexes have hexacoordinated configuration with the schiff base and three molecules of water. The mole ratio of tridentate schiff base ligand to metals was 1:1. These complexes have been identified by infrared spectra, visible spectra, TGA, DTA and elemental analysis.

  • Application of fuel cell to produce renewable energy for commercial purpose is limited by the high cost of Pt based electrode materials. Development of inexpensive, high energetic electrode is the need of the hour to produce pollution free energy using bio-fuel through a fuel cell. Ni-Cu and Ni-CeO2-Cu electrode materials, electro synthesized by pulse current have been developed. The surface morphology of the electrode materials is controlled by different deposition parameters in order to produce a high current from the electro-oxidation of the fuel, the ethanol. The developed materials are electrochemically characterized by Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Chronoamperometry (CA) and Potentiodynamic polarization tests. The results confirm that the high current is due to their enhanced catalytic properties viz. high exchange current density (i0), low polarization resistance (Rp) and low impedance. It is worthwhile to mention here that the addition of CeO2 to Ni-Cu has outperformed Pt as far as the high electro catalytic properties are concerned; the exchange current density is about eight times higher than the same on Pt surface. The morphology of the electrode surface examined by SEM and FESEM exhibits that the grains are narrow and sub spherical with 3D surface, containing vacancies in between the elongated grains. The fact has enhanced more surface area for electro oxidation of the fuel, giving rise to an increase in current. Presence of Ni, CeO2, and Cu is confirmed by the XRD and EDXS. Fuel cell fabricated with Ni-CeO2-Cu material electrode is expected to produce clean electrical energy at cheaper rates than conventional one, using bio fuel the derived from biomass.

  • Ni-Cu-Zn ferrites were prepared by the co-precipitation. Physical properties and Microwave absorbing properties were investigated in Ni-Cu-Zn ferrite for the aim of microwave absorbers. From the analysis of X-ray diffraction patterns, we can see that all the particles have only a single phase spinel structure. The loss factor was maximum at sintering temperature $1100^{\circ}C$. The initial permeability of sintered ferrite obtained was an average of 50. We found that the $(Ni_{0.7}Cu_{0.2}Zn_{0.1}O)_{1.02}(Fe_2O_3)_{0.98}$ can be used in ferrite rubber composite microwave absorber when sintering temperature at $1100^{\circ}C$.

  • A basic study on the recovery of heavy metals such as Zn, Ni, Cu and Fe ions from wastewater was carried out with the spent iron oxide catalyst, which was used in the Styrene Monomer(SM) production company. The heavy metals could be recovered more than 98% with the spent iron oxide catalyst. The alkaline components of the spent catalyst could be precipitated the metal ions of the wastewater as metal hydroxides at the higher pH 10.6 in Ni, pH 8.0 in Cu, pH 6.5 in Fe, pH 8.5 in Zn. But the metal ions are adsorbed physically on the surface of the spent catalyst in the range of the pH of the metal hydroxides and pH 3.0, which is the isoelectric point of the iron oxide catalyst.

  • Objective: The aim of this trial was to compare the alignment efficiency and intermaxillary arch dimension changes of nickel-titanium (NiTi) or copper-nickel-titanium (CuNiTi) round archwires with increasing diameters applied sequentially to the mandibular arch. Methods: The initial alignment phase of fixed orthodontic treatment with NiTi or CuNiTi round archwires was studied in a randomly allocated sample of 66 patients. The NiTi group comprised 26 women, 10 men, and the CuNiTi ($27^{\circ}C$) group comprised 20 women, 10 men. The eligibility criteria were as follows: anterior mandibular crowding of minimum 6 mm according to Little's Irregularity Index (LII), treatment requiring no extraction of premolars, 12 to 18 years of age, permanent dentition, skeletal and dental Class I malocclusion. The main outcome measure was the alignment of the mandibular anterior dentition; the secondary outcome measure was the change in mandibular dental arch dimensions during 12 weeks. Simple randomization (allocation ratio 1:1) was used in this single-blind study. LII and mandibular arch dimensions were measured on three-dimensional digital dental models at 2-week intervals. Results: No statistically significant difference was observed between NiTi and CuNiTi according to LII (p > 0.05). Intercanine and intermolar arch perimeters increased in the CuNiTi group (p < 0.001). Inter-first premolar width showed a statistically significant interaction in week ${\times}$ diameter ${\times}$ application (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The effects of NiTi and CuNiTi round archwires were similar in terms of their alignment efficiency. However, the intercanine and intermolar arch perimeters, and the inter-first premolar width changes differed between groups.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the concentrations of Ni, Cr and Cu, to analyze the correlations among those, and between concentrations and traffic volumes by type of car in roadside ambient air at Chongro-, Chungkechon- and Kangnam terminal- area in Seoul from October 1st to October 31st in 1997. The results were as follows ; 1. The means of concentrations of Ni in roadside ambient air were 34.1, 25.1 and 23.6 ng/m$^3$ at Chungkechon, Kangnam terminal and Chongro area, respectively. The highest concentrations of Ni by time were 26.8 in the evening, 45.5 in the evening and 49.4 ng/m$^3$ in the forenoon at Chongro, Chungkechon and Kangnam terminal area, respectively. 2. The means of concentrations of Cr in road side ambient air were 97.7, 80.1 and 70.9 ng/m$^3$ at Chong, Chungkechon and Kangnam terminal area, respectively. The highest concentrations of Cu by time were 205.3 in the evening, 114.4 in the evening and 92.3 ng/m$^3$ in the forenoon at Chongro, Chungkechon and Kangnam terminal area, respectively. 4. The tendencies of concentrations of Ni and Cr by time were similar to each other. Especially, at Kangnam terminal area, correlation coefficients between concentrations of Ni and Cr and the traffic volume of bus were high(r=0.997,0.975). 5. The tendency of concentration of Cu and the traffic volume of passenger car at each area were high(r=0.832, 0.968) 6. Correlation coefficients between Cu and Zn, and between Ni and Cr were 0.762 and 0.842, respectively. This means that the possibility of co-existence of Cu-Zn or Ni-Cr is very high.
