  • Although many metals contaminated sediment from coastal area contain both anionic and cationic heavy metals, the current remediation technologies are not effective for stabilize heavy metals of both anionic and cationic elements from contaminated coastal region. the present work investigated the efficiency and mechanism of immobilization of Fe, Zn, Cr, Cu, Pb and Cd metal solutions in modified zeolite based biostimulant ball. Biostimulant ball containing acetate, nitrate and sulphate which are enhance the activity of marine microorganisms and it can act as electron donors and electron acceptors. Modified zeolite and chelating agent is greatly enhance the metal stabilization due to increased immobility of the analysed metals. The XRD, FT-IR and SEM of modified zeolite which cheating agents containing heavy metals were investigated. The results indicated that heavy metals could be effectively immobilized in modified zeolite and chelating agents in BSB added sediment. The immobilization of heavy metals in modified zeolite and chelating agents along with BSB could be due to stabilize of heavy metal cations. Immobilization of heavy metals using BSB with modified zeolite and chelating agent has lower cost effect and enhance the sediment quality.

  • The adsorption properties of CO on the cation exchanged natural zeolite, $K_{111}$ and cation effects upon the CO adsorption were studied. $Na^+-,\;Cu^{2+}-\;and\;Ba^{2+}-\;K_{111}$ exhibited relatively good CO adsorption capacities and $Ba^{2+}- K_{111}$ treated by 0.4 N-$BaCl_2$ solution proved itself as the best adsorbent and superior to the synthetic zeolite 4A and 5A. The observed adsorption tendency due to the cations were in the order of $Ba^{2+}>Cu^{2+}>Na^+>K^+>Mg^{2+}>Ca^{2+}$. The cation exchanged number per unit cell as well as the kind of cation which forms bond with CO molecules in different intensities and other mineral factors such as pore size indicated to be important factors to the CO adsorption properties. The CNDO/2 calculations were performed to compare the adsorption tendencies and CO interaction energy of cations in $K_{111}$.

  • This study was carried out to determine the effects of mineral composition and grain size of zeolite and bentonite from Po-hang and Kyung-ju, South Korea on the adsorption of heavy metals. Zeolite specimen consists mainly of mordenite, clinoptilolite, heulandite etc. And bentonite specimen is mainly composed of montmorillonite. Five heavy metals, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, and Pb were used to conduct the relevant adsorption experiments with the fixed concentrations of 10 ppm and 20 ppm, respectively. Host specimens excluding specimen for Cr resulted in the adsorption rate over average 80 percent, and over 95 percent for Pb. This study indicates that zeolite is more efficient in the adsorption of the heavy metals than bentonite, and its adsorption rate tends to decrease with increasing concentration of the heavy metals.

  • Cu(II)-organic complexes were synthesized with Lewis base organic ligands including diamine, aminothiol, and dithiol to determine the reactivity for DFP hydrolysis. Results show that the aminothiol catalyst enhances the hydrolysis of DFP in three folds compared to diamine type because aminothiol has higher basicity than diamine. Due to low solubility of Cu(II)(1,2-ethane dithiol)$(NO_3)_2$, it is impossible to compare directly the rates in homogeneous condition. However, the rate of dithol complex is even 1.6 times faster than that of the diamine type. The reactivity of zeolite for DFP hydrolysis is also evaluated. NaY type does not promote the hydrolysis, but RuNaY shows relatively lower reactivity than those of Cu(II)-organic ligands complexes.

  • This study was conducted for an efficient utilization of waste fly ash obtained from the power plant. Fly ash was used for synthesizing zeolite. Na-Pl zeolite could be easily synthesized from waste fly ash and showed the potential to remove heavy metal ions. The synthetic zeolite showed good adsorption property for heavy metal much better than raw fly ash and natural zeolites. Na-Pl exhibited the high adsorption efficiency with a maximum value of 260 Pb mg/g and strong affinity for Pb2+ ion. The metal ion selectivity of Na-Pl was determined in a decreasing order : $Pb^{2+}$>$Cd^{2+}$>$Cu^{2+}$+>$Zn^{2+}$>$Fe^{3+}$

  • The mineralogical properties of natural zeolite comixed with montmorillonite were investigated by the chemical composition analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. The experimental results on the removal of heavy metal ions by using the natural sample are summerized as follows. The removal of the heavy metal in solution is greatly influenced by the pH. Also, the removal capacity of heavy metal ions by zeolite and montmorillonite have increased in order of $Cu^{2+}>Cd^{2+}>Ni^{2+}$.

  • The removal performance of copper ion was studied using Na-P1 zeolites synthesized from Jeju scoria. The scoria which is found in large amounts in Jeju Island, was sampled at four regions, Jeju-shi Bonggae-dong(A). Pukcheju-gun Hanlim-eup Sangmyong-ri Mangoreum(B), Pukcheju-gun Hanlim-eup Keumag-ri(C) and Namcheju-gun Andeok-myun Dongkwang-ri(D). Synthetic Na-P1 zeolites used in this study were more effective than natural zeolite and scoria for the removal of copper ion. The removal performances of copper ion decreased in the order of Na-P1(D) > Na-P1(C) > Na-P1(B) > Na-P1(A) among Na-P1 synthesized from the scoria according to region. These results showed the same trend with cation exchange capacity(CEC) for each synthetic zeolite, i.e., the synthetic Na-P1 zeolite with a higher CEC showed a higher removal performance. The effective diffusion coefficients of copper ion by synthetic Na-P1 zeolites were one hundred and ten times higher than those by a pure zeolite 4A and the zeolite A synthesized from coal fly ash, respectively.

  • Domestic water treatment plants operate the rapid and slow filtering system using the filtering sands. Most of them are composed of beach sands, which have less sorption capacity of heavy metals as well as organic contaminants. Therefore, the development of fortified functional filtering materials with high removal capacity of organic and inorganic contaminants is needed to prevent the unexpected load of contaminated source water. This study aims to test the hydrochemical change and the removing capacity of heavy metals such as Cd, Cu, and Pb on the Jumunjin sand, feldspathic sand(weathering product of Jecheon granite), feldspathic mixing sand I(feldspathic sand mixed with 10 wt% zeolite), and feldspathic mixing sand II (feldspathic sand mixed with 20 wt% zeolite). Feldspathic mixing sand I and II showed the eruption of higher amounts of cations and anions compared with the Jumunjin sand and feldspathic sand. They also showed higher eruption of Si, Ca, $SO_4$ ions than that of Al, $NO_3$, Fe, K, Mg, and P. Feldspathic mixing sand II caused higher eruption of some cations of Na, Ca, Al than feldspathic mixing sud I, which is the result controlled by the dissolution of zeolite. Jumunjin sand and feldspathic sand showed very weak sorption of Cd, Cu and Pb. In contrast to this, feldspathic mixing sand I and II showed the high sorption and removal capacity of the increasing order of Cd, Cu and Pb. Feldspathic mixing sand II including 20% zeolite showed a fortified removal capacity of some heavy metals. Therefore, feldspathic mixing sand mixed with some contents of zeolite could be used as the fortified filtering materials for the water filtering and purification in the domestic water treatment plants.
