In order to recover valuable metals from fine-grained electronic waste, bioleaching of Cu, Zn, Al, Co, Ni, Fe, Sn and Pb were carried out using Aspergillus niger as a leaching microorganism in a shaking flask. Aspergillus niger was able to grow in the presence of electronic scrap. The formation of organic acids(citric and oxalic acid) from Aspergillus niger caused the mobilization of metals from waste electronic scrap. In a preliminary study, in order to obtain the data on the leaching of Cu, Zn, Al, Fe, Co and Ni from electronic scrap, chemical leaching using organic acid(Citric acid and Oxalic acid) was accomplished. At the electronic scrap concentration of 50 g/L, Aspergillus niger were able to leach more than 95% of the available Cu, Co. But Al, Zn, Pb and Sn were leached about 15-35%. Ni and Fe were detected in the leachate less than 10%.

In order to control the grain size, the spark plasma sintering technique is applied for the manufacturing of Cu-26.7Al-4.05AI(wt.%) shape memory alloy with pure Cu, Zn, and Al element powders. The sintering processes were carried out under different atmospheres. The sintered bodies were denser under Ar or Ar+4%$H_2$gas atmosphere than under vacuum. With use of small-sized powders, a very small average grain size of 2∼3 $\mu\textrm{m}$ was obtained, but the single phase was not formed. With the large-sized powders the single austenitic phase was observed with the average grain size of $70∼72\mu\textrm{m}$. When the different size of raw powders was mixed, it is confirmed that the average grain size of the manufactured alloys was 15 $\mu\textrm{m}$ with single austenitic phase, but the distribution of grain size was not uniform.
To study the effects of metal ions on the activities of antioxidative enzymes, the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD), peroxidase(POD), catalase(CAT) of Persicaria vulgaris has been studied after treating with Cd, Cu, Zn and Al. 1. The activities of SOD in leaf and stem were decreased, but that in root was increased. Among the metal ions studied in this report, Al gave the highest increase in SOD activity in root. 2. The activities of POD after treating with Cd or Cu did not show any significant differences. POD activities after treating with Zn and Al has been decreased, however, that in root showed increased activities after treating with Zn 5,000 ppm or Al 500 ppm. 3. The activity of CAT in leaf was decreased with every metals studied. The CAT activity in root was increased with increased concentration. The root treated with Al showed highest activity. 4. The presence of isozymes after treated metal ions has been studied in gel electrophoresis. The POD treated plant did not show any new isozymes, but the intensity of one of pre-existent band was increased. The SOD treated plant showed the several new isozymes.
In the current study, Al-Mn-Zn alloys are strip-cast and used as the base alloy for the core of aluminum clad sheets used in automotive condenser fins. Transition elements such as Cu and Cr are added to the base core alloy in order to improve the properties of the clad sheets. The AA4343/Al-Mn-Zn-X(X: Cu, Cr)/AA4343 clad sheets are fabricated by roll bonding and further cold-rolled to a thickness of 0.08 mm. Clad sheets were intermediately annealed during cold rolling at $450^{\circ}C$ in order to obtain 40% reduction at the final thickness. Tensile strength and sag resistance of the clad sheets are improved by Cu additions to the core alloy, while corrosion resistance is also increased. Cr-additions to the clad sheets enhance sag resistance and provide low enough corrosion, although tensile strength is not improved. The effect of Cu and Cr additions on the properties of the clad sheets is elucidated by microstructural analysis.

We fabricated two different transparent conducting oxide thin films of ZnO doped with Ga ($Ga_2O_3$ 0.9 wt%) as well as Al ($Al_2O_3$ 2.1 wt%) (GAZO) and ZnO doped only with Al ($Al_2O_3$ 3 wt%) (AZO). It was investigated how it affects the moisture resistance of the transparent electrode. In addition, $Cu(In,Ga)Se_2$ thin film solar cells with two transparent oxides as front electrodes were fabricated, and the correlation between humidity resistance of transparent electrodes and device performance of solar cells was examined. When both transparent electrodes were exposed to high temperature distilled water, they showed a rapid increase in sheet resistance and a decrease in the fill factor of the solar cell. However, AZO showed a drastic decrease in efficiency at the beginning of exposure, while GAZO showed that the deterioration of efficiency occurred over a long period of time and that the long term moisture resistance of GAZO was better.
To improve the ductility of $Al_3Hf$ and $Al_3Ta$ intermetallic compounds, which are the potential temperature structural materials, the mechanical alloying behaviour and the effect of ternary additions on the $Ll_2$ phase formation were investigated. During the mechanical alloying by the SPEX mill, the $Ll_2$$Al_3Hf$ intermetallic compound was formed after 6 hours of milling in AL-25%Hf system. In AL-25%Ta system, however, only the $D0_{22}$$Al_3Ta$ intermetallic compound was formed until 30 hours of milling and the $Ll_2$ phase was not observed. In AL-12.5%M-25%Ta(M=Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Ni) systems, the additions of Cu and Zn had no effect on the $D0_{22}$ structure of the binary $Al_3Hf$ and the additions of Mn, Fe and Ni produced the amorphous phase. Therefore it was considered that these ternary additions could not overcome the energy difference between $Ll_2$ and $D0_{22}$ structures in the $Al_3Hf$ intermetallic compound. In AL-12.5%M-25%Hf(M=Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Ni)systems, the additions of Cu and Zn did not affect the $Ll_2$ structure of the binary $Al_3Hf$ but the additions of oMn, Fe and Ni produced the amorphous phase as they did in AL-12.5%M-25%Ta systems. Therefore, it was considered that the Ni, Mn and Fe additions promote the formation of amorphous phase in $Al_3X$ intermetallic compounds.

In this study, the novel concept catalytic reactor was designed for water-gas shift reaction (WGS) under high pressure. The novel concept catalytic reactor was composed of an autoclave, the catalyst, and liquid water. Cu-ZnO/$Al_2O_3$ as the low temperature shift catalyst was used for WGS reaction. WGS in the novel concept catalytic reactor was carried out at the ranges of 150~$250^{\circ}C$ and 30~50 atm. The liquid water was filled at the bottom of the autoclave catalytic reactor and the catalyst of pellet type was located at the gas-liquid water interface. It was concluded that WGS reaction occurred over the surface of catalysts partially wetted with liquid water. The conversion of CO for WGS was also controlled with changing content of Cu and ZnO used as the catalytic active components. Meanwhile, the catalyst of honey comb type coated with Cu-ZnO/$Al_2O_3$ was used in order to increase the contact area between wet-surface of catalyst and the reactants of gas phase. It was confirmed from these experiments that $H_2$/CO ratio of the simulated coal gas increased from 0.5 to 0.8 by WGS at gas-liquid water interface over the wet surface of honey comb type catalyst at $250^{\circ}C$ and 50 atm.
The magnetic properties of the hot-pressed magnets made from the Fe-Nd-B alloys, mechanically ground and subsequently blended with binary additives such as Al-Cu and Ag-Zn before hot pressing, were investigated. The coercivities of the magnets increased as the concentration of Al-Cu increased up to 1 wt.% or up to 3 wt.% in the case of Ag-Zn. At higher concentrations the coercivities decreased markedly. The maximum gain in coercivity by the addition was about 20 %. typical values of $_{i}H_{c}$ and $B_{r}$ of a hotpressed magnet containing 1 wt.% Al-Cu were 18 kOe and 7 kG, respectively. It was found that Cu, Ag, and Zn, which diffused into the magnet during hot pressing, were mostly concentrated on the Nd-rich grain boundary phase whereas Al was present not only in the grain boundary region but also in the matrix grains.

Hydrogenolysis of glycerol to propylene glycol was performed over binary and ternary metal oxide catalysts. The conversion of glycerol and selectivity to propylene glycol were increased on Cu/Zn and Cu/Cr mixed oxides compared to pure CuO and ZnO oxides. The addition of alumina into Cu/Zn mixed oxide very highly increased the conversion of glycerol and selectivity to propylene glycol. The conversion of glycerol was increased with increasing the reaction temperature but the selectivity to propylene glycol was shown to have maximum value at $200^{\circ}C$ and then decreased at $250^{\circ}C$. The conversion of glycerol and selectivity to propylene glycol were decreased with increasing the glycerol concentration.

To investigate the effect of magnesium oxide addition, $Cu/ZnO/MgO/Al_2O_3$ (CZMA) catalysts were prepared using co-precipitation method with fixed molar ratio of Cu/Zn/Mg/Al as 45/45/5/5 mol% for low-temperature water gas shift reaction. Synthesized catalysts were characterized by using BET, $N_2O$ chemisorption, XRD, $H_2-TPR$ and $NH_3-TPD$ analysis. The catalytic activity tests were carried out at a GHSV of $28,000h^{-1}$ and a temperature range of $200{\sim}320^{\circ}C$. At the same condition, magnesium oxide added catalyst (CZMA 400) showed that the lowest reduction temperature and stable presence of $Cu^+$, that is active species and abundant weak acid site. Also magnesium oxide added catalysts (CZMA) showed higher catalytic activity at temperature range above $240^{\circ}C$ than the catalyst without magnesium oxide (CZA). Consequently, CZMA 400 catalyst is considered to be excellent catalyst showing CO conversion of 77.59% without deactivation for about 75 hours at $240^{\circ}C$, GHSV $28,000h^{-1}$.
