  • Corrosion tests were carried out in $360^{\circ}C$ water and $360^{\circ}C$ 70ppm LiOH solution to investigate the corrosion behavior of new zirconium alloys (Zr-0.4Nb-0.8Sn-xFeCrMn, Zr-0.2Nb-1.1Sn-xFeCrMn, Zr-1.0Nb-xFeCu). Microstructures of tested alloys were analyzed by optical microscope and TEM. The cross-sectional surface and crystalline structure of the oxide layer were analyzed by SEM and XRD. From the results of corrosion test, all the alloys showed higher corrosion rates in $360^{\circ}C$ 70ppm LiOH aqueous solution thats in $360^{\circ}C$ water. Especially, high Nb-containing alloy exhibited the acceleration of corrosion rate in LiOH solution. The low Nb- and Sn-added alloys showed better corrosion resistance than the Sn- free high Nb alloy. from the effect of final annealing on the corrosion, it was observed that the partially recrystallized alloys showed better corrosion resistance than fully recrystallized alloys. This would be related to the size and distribution of the second phase particles.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the specific alloying elements in steel such as Cr, Ni and Cu, and surface roughness of substrate with two different FCS temperature zones in the CAL process on the phosphatability of the cold-rolled sheet used for the drum in order to improve the zinec phosphating property. Phosphatability is dependent of the surface oxide and roughness on the substrate and can be indirectly improved by increasing surface roughness of the steel sheet. Basically, in order to obtain the good phosphatability, the low concentration of the retained elements such as Cr, Ni and Cu among the steel alloy elements should be required. Phosphatability of substrate with high concentration instead of the retained elements and surface roughness, however, can be effectively improved instead of low FSC temperature.

  • The milling and particulate characteristics of Al alloy-$Al_2O_3$ powder mixtures for a reaction-bonded $Al_2O_3$ (RBAO) process were studied. A commercially available prealloyed Al powder with Zn, Mg, Cu and Cr alloying elements (7475 series) was mixed with a calcined sinter-active $Al_2O_3$ powder and then milled in centrifugal milling equipment for ~48 hrs. The Al alloy-$Al_2O_3$ powder mixtures after milling were characterized and evaluated in various ways to reveal their particulate characteristics during milling. The milling efficiency of the Al alloy increased with a longer milling time. Comminution of the Al alloy particles started with its elongation, showing a high aspect ratio. With a longer milling time, the elongated Al alloy particle changed in terms of its shape and size, becoming equiaxially fine particles. Regardless of the milling efficiency of the Al alloy particles, all of the Al alloy particles repeatedly experienced strong plastic deformation during milling, giving rise to higher density of surface defects, such as microcracks, and leading to higher residual microstress within the Al alloy particles. The chemical reactions, oxidation behavior and hydration behavior of the Al alloy particles and the hydrolysis characteristics of their reaction with the environment were also observed during the milling process and during the subsequent powder handling steps.

  • In order to verify the integrity of the first wall (FW) of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), the fabricated Cu/SS mock-up is tested in the JAEA Electron Beam Irradiation Test Stand (JEBIS). To fabricate the Cu/SS mock-up, CuCrZr and 316L authentic stainless steel (SS316L) are used for Cu alloy and steel, respectively The hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is used as a manufacturing method with a $1050^{\circ}C$ and 150 MPa. The high heat flux (HHF) test is performed using an electron beam with a heat flux of $5MW/m^2$ and a cycle of 15-sec on time and 30-sec off time. The temperature measurement in the HHF test shows good agreement with the results obtained from ANSYS code analysis, which is used for determining the HHF test conditions.

  • Crystal structure of the $L1_2$ type $(Al,X)_3Ti$ alloy (X = Cr,Cu) is analyzed by X-ray diffractometry and the nonuniform strain behavior at high temperature is investigated. The lattice constants for the $L1_2$ type $(Al,X)_3Ti$ alloys decrease in the order of the atomic number of the substituted atom X, and the hardness tends to increase. In a compressive test at around 473K for $Al_{67.5}Ti_{25}Cr_{7.5}$, $Al_{65}Ti_{25}Cr_{10}$ and $Al_{62.5}Ti_{25}Cu_{12.5}$ alloys, it is found that the stress-strain curves showed serration, and deformation rate dependence appeared. It is assumed that the generation of serration is due to dynamic strain aging caused by the diffusion of solute atoms. As a result, activation energy of 60-95 kJ/mol is obtained. This process does not require direct involvement. In order to investigate the generation of serrations in detail, compression tests are carried out under various conditions. As a result, in the strain rate range of this experiment, serration is found to occur after 470K at a certain critical strain. The critical strain increases as the strain rate increases at constant temperature, and the critical strain tends to decrease as temperature rises under constant strain rate. This tendency is common to all alloys produced. In the case of this alloy system, the serration at around 473K corresponds to the case in which the dislocation velocity is faster than the diffusion rate of interstitial solute atoms at low temperature.

  • Cu-Cr alloy thin film requires good quality of etching be used for TAB technology. The etched cross sec-tion was clean enough when the etching was performed in 0.1M $FeCl_3$ solution at $50^{\circ}C$. The etching rate was increased with the amount of $KMnO_4$. For enhanced profile of cross section and rate, the spray etchning was found to be superior compared to the immersion etching. A series of experiments were performed to improve the uniformity of the current distribution in electrodeposition onto the substrate with lithographic patterns. Copper was electrodeposited from quiescent-solution, paddle-agitated-solution, and air-bubbled-solution to in-vestigate the effect of the fluid flow. The thickness profile of the specimen measured by profilmetry has the non uniformity at feature scale in quiescent-solution, because of the longitudinal vortex roll caused by the natural convection. However, uniform thickness profile was achieved in paddle-agitated or air bubbled solu-tion.

  • The influence of casting cooling rate during the preparation of ingots on the grain size distribution and the magnetizing ability of $\textrm{Nd}_{16}\textrm{Fe}_{72}\textrm{V}_{4}\textrm{B}_{8}$ sintered magnets were investigated. Sintered magnets prepared from copper mold which allow a higher cooling rate, show a smaller grain size distribution and god magnetizing ability. The effects of adding bride forming elements, such as Cr, Mn, Nb, and W on the magnetic properties of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets were also investigated. Both Cr and W addition increase coercivity and the resultant $\textrm{Nd}_{16}\textrm{Fe}_{72}\textrm{Cr}_{4}\textrm{B}_{9}$ alloy exhibits a similar magnetizing ability in comparison with $\textrm{Nd}_{16}\textrm{Fe}_{72}\textrm{V}_{4}\textrm{B}_{8}$ alloy.

  • Copper alloys are commonly applied to ship's propellers, pumps and valves which are serviced in seawater due to their good castability and corrosion resistance. In the environment of high flow velocity, however, erosion damage predominates over corrosion damage. In particular, the cavitation in seawater environment accelerates surface damage to copper alloys, resulting in degradation of products and economic losses and also threatening safety. The surface was coated with WC-27NiCr by high velocity oxygen fuel(HVOF) spraying technique to attain durability and cavitation resistance of copper alloys under high velocity/pressure flow. The cavitation test was performed for the WC-27NiCr coating deposited by HVOF in seawater at the amplitude of $30{\mu}m$ with seawater temperature. The cavitation at $15^{\circ}C$ caused exfoliation of the coating layer in 17.5 hours while that of $25^{\circ}C$ caused the exfoliation in 12.5 hours. When the temperature of seawater was elevated to $25^{\circ}C$ from $15^{\circ}C$, more damage was induced by over 160%. Although WC-27NiCr has good durability, corrosion resistance and eletrochemical stability, the cavitation damage rate of the coating layer could remarkably increase at the elevated temperatures under cavitation environments.

  • Microstructure and tensile strength of the vacuum brazed stainless steel(STS303) and Cu were investigated. For brazing, the BNi-2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 (A.W.S standard) were used as filler metals. The Oxides such as $Cr_2O_3$ and $SiO_2$ were observed at brazed layers between STS303 and Cu matrix. Also, the intermetallic compounds of Cr-B and Ni-P were observed at brazed layers. Brazed STS303-Cu specimens with BNi-2, 3, 4 filler metals showed almost elastic deformation followed by plastic yielding and strain hardening up to a peak stress. On the other hand, it is likely that the fracture of the brazed specimens with BNi-6 and 7 was occurred in elastic range without plastic yielding up to a peak stress. Among these filler metals, the BNi-2 brazed at $1050^{\circ}C$ showed excellent wettability and the highest tensile strength (101.6MPa).

  • The aim of this study is fabricating of composite filler metal (CFM) by a combination of selective laser sintering (SLS) of stainless steel powders (RapidSteel $2.0^{TM}$ and liquid phase infiltration of Ag-28 wt.%Cu alloy. Porous stainless steel body with inter-connected pore channels was fabricated by SLS, binder decomposing and densification processes. By the direct contact infiltration, the narrow inter-particle channels of the porous body were completely filled with the Ag-28 wt.%Cu alloy infiltrant. During infiltration, the dissolved elements of Fe, Ni and Cr from the porous body were solved into copper solid solution phases, which consist of eutectic structure of composite metal matrix. The S10C/CFM/S10C joints, which have narrow clearance gaps between them up to 10 micrometers, were joined successfully by self-feeding of filler metal from the matrix of CFM. The CFM kept its original thickness and microstructure after brazing. The tensile strength of brazed specimen was higher than 30 kgf/$mm^2$ and showed a typical ductile fracture mode in the CFM.
