  • The removal of Cd(II) and Cu(II) from aqueous solution by an agricultural solid waste biomass prepared from Moringa oleifera bark (MOB) was investigated. The biosorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Furthermore, the effect of initial pH, contact time, biosorbent dosage, initial metal ion concentration and temperature on the biosorption of Cd(II) and Cu(II) were studied using the batch sorption technique. Kinetic studies indicated that the biosorption process of the metal ions followed the pseudo-second order model. The biosorption data was analyzed by the Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich, and Temkin isotherm models. Based on the Langmuir isotherm, the maximum biosorption capacities for Cd(II) and Cu(II) onto MOB were 39.41 and 36.59 mg/g at 323 K, respectively. The thermodynamic parameters, Gibbs free energy (${\Delta}G^o$), enthalpy (${\Delta}H^o$), and entropy (${\Delta}S^o$) changes, were also calculated, and the values indicated that the biosorption process was endothermic, spontaneous and feasible in the temperature range of 303-323 K. It was concluded that MOB powder can be used as an effective, low cost, and environmentally friendly biosorbent for the removal of Cd(II) and Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution.

  • In this research, biological uptake of heavy metals(Cd(II), Cu(II), Zn(II)) was measured under various conditions ; pH, initial heavy metal concentration, temperature, contact time and the amount of biomass through batch test. From this research, it was found that heavy metals might be removed through adsorption and accumulation in activated sludge process. Heavy metals were highly concentrated by microbial floc in activated sludge. Also, the removal efficiency was reached up to 80~90% within and after 1 hour the increase of removal efficiency was minimal. The order of accumulation efficiency was Cu(II)>Zn(II)>Cd(II), and the bonding strength between heavy metals and microbial floc may be expressed in order of Cu(II)>Zn(II)>Cd(II).

  • Nanoindentation technique has been used to measure the mechanical properties of aluminium alloy foam cell walls. Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy foams of different compositions and different cell morphologies were produced using powder metallurgical method. Cell morphology of the foam was controlled during production by varying foaming time and temperature. Mechanical properties such as hardness and Young's modulus were calculated using two different methods: a continuous stiffness measurement (CSM) and an unloading stiffness measurement (USM) method. Experimental results showed that hardness and Young's modulus of Al-5%(wt.)Si-4%Cu-4%Mg (544 alloy) precursor and foam walls are higher than those of Al-3%Si-2%Cu-2%Mg (322 alloy) precursor and foam walls. It was noticed that mechanical properties of cell wall are different from those of precursor materials.

  • The Geodo mine is located in the southern limb of the Hambaeg syncline. Geology of the area consists of Paleozoic-Mesozoic sedimentary Rocks and Cretaceous igneous rocks. The important igneous rocks presumably related to skarnization and ore mineralization in the area, are the early granodiorite and the late porphyritic granodiorite. Two mineralogical types of ore deposits are recognized in the area. They are the Fe-Cu deposits in the Myobong formation and the Au-Bi-Cu deposits in the Hwajeol formation. Contact metamorphism due to granodiorite intrusion includes hornfelsization, exoskarnization and endoskarnization. Wall-rock alterations related to the Fe mineralization are grouped into the hydrothermal replacement skarnization and the hydrothermal filling skarnization. Another hydrothermal alteration is associated with the Cu mineralization. Various mineralogical analyses have been applied for the identification of minerals. They include optical microscopy, chemical analysis, etching test, X-ray diffraction, and infrared absorption spectroscopic analyses. The ore minerals in these ore deposits are classified into two groups;hypogene and supergene minerals. Hypogene minerals consist of magnetite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and chalcocite. Supergene minerals consist of chalcocite, bornite, and geothite. Ore minerals show various kinds of ore texture: open-space filling, exsolution, replacement, and cementation texture. The gangue minerals consist of quartz, diopside, epidote, garnet and plagioclase in the hornfelsic zone, garnet, diopside, scapolite, actinolite, sericite, chlorite, quartz, and calcite in the skarn zone, and, epidote, chlorite, sericite, quartz, and calcite in the late hydrothermal alteration zone. This study shows that the Fe-Cu deposits are of metasomatic pipe type with the later hydrothermal fillings, and the Au-Bi-Cu deposits are of hydrothermal fissure-filling type. The mineralization is probably related to the intrusion of porphyritic granite.

  • Joint properties of vehicle ECU (Electric Control Unit) module which was manufactured by using Sn-Cu-Cr-Ca alloy were investigated. A new solder which has a middle melting temperature about $231^{\circ}C$ was fabricated as the type of 300um solder ball and paste type. The prototype modules were made by reflow process and measured spreadability, wettability shear strength and estimated interface reaction. The spreadability of the alloy was about 84% from the measurement of contact angle of the solder ball and the wetting force was measured 2mN. The average shear strength of the module which was manufactured by using the solder paste, was 1.9 $kg/mm^2$. Also, the thickness of IMC(intermetallic compound) was evaluated with various aging temperature and time in order to understand Cr effect on Sn-0.7Cu solder. $Cu_6Sn_5$ IMC was formed between Cu pad and the solder alloy and the average thickness of the $Cu_6Sn_5$ IMC was measured about 4um and it was about 50% of thickness of $Cu_6Sn_5$ IMC in Sn-0.7Cu. It is expected to have a positive effect on reliability of the solder joint.

  • Copper oxide thin films were deposited on the p-type Si(100) by r.f. magnetron sputtering as a function of different substrate temperature. The deposited copper oxide thin films were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The SEM and SE data show that the thickness of the copper oxide films was about 170 nm. AFM images show that the surface roughness of copper oxide films was increased with increasing substrate temperature. As the substrate temperature increased, monoclinic CuO (111) peak appeared and the crystal size decreased while the monoclinic CuO (-111) peak was independent on the substrate temperature. The oxidation states of Cu 2p and O 1s resulted from XPS were not affected on the substrate temperature. The contact angle measurement was also studied and indicated that the surface of copper oxide thin films deposited high temperature has more hydrophobic surface than that of deposited at low temperature.

  • Experimental study on the twin roll strip casting of BCuP-5(Cu-15wt%Ag-wt5%P) alloy was carried out using laboratory scale horizontal type twin roll caster. In this study, among the various operating parameters, such as tundish angle, contact angle, pouring temperature, roll speed, presetting gap of the rolls and kinds of roll and tundish materials, effect of pouring temperature for strip casting of BCuP-5 alloy which has long freezing range of about $170^{\circ}C$ was mainly investigated. BCuP-5 alloy strip was successfully produced when pouring molten metal at lower temperature than its liquidus temperature. Microstructure of the cast strip consists of primary Cu and eutectic. Especially the size of primary Cu phase increased with decreasing of pouring temperature.

  • As aluminum becomes more widely used in power distribution systems, so the corrosion caused by bimetallic contacts of aluminum and copper becomes more serious problem. In particular, the poor contact of the commonly used compression type bimetal connections may bring about the disastrous interruption of the power supply resulted from the increased corrosion within the joints, which is accelerated by the permeation of water and electrolyte into the interface. In this paper, the corrosion characteristics of aluminum and copper are investigated to improve the reliability of Al-Cu connectons.

  • In this paper, the relationship between the material removal rate and the interfacial mechanical properties at particle-surface contact situation, which can be seen in an abrasive machining process using micro/nano-sized particles, was discussed. Friction and stiffnesses were measured experimentally on an atomic force microscope (AFM) by using colloidal probes which have a silica colloid particle in place of tip to simulate a particle-flat surface contact in an abrasive machining process. From the experimental investigation and theoretical contact analysis, the interfacial contact properties such as lateral stiffness of contact, friction, the material removal rate were presented with respect to some of material surfaces and the relationship between the properties as well.
