  • 8-Hydroxyquinoline-resorcinol(8-HQR) and 8-hydroxyquinoline-resorcinol-salicylic acid (8-HQRS) chelate resins were prepared by the condensation reaction of 8-hydroxyquinoline, or 8-hydroxyquinoline-salicylic acid, in the presence of resorcinol with formaldehyde. The ion exchange capacities of 8-HQR and 8-HQRS resins were 4.1 meq/g and 5.4 meq/g, respectively. The adsorption and distribution coefficient of metal ions, such as Fe(III), Cu(II), Pb(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) on these resins were discussed. The adsorption of metal ions on these chelate resins showed that the maximum adsorption condition is pH 7. And the distribution coefficient of metal ions on these resins was increased with decreasing of hydrochloric acid concentration.

  • We report a new tetrameric supramolecular Cu(II) complex ($Cu_4L_4$ = tetrakis(N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-2,2'-ethylenedianiline)Copper(II)) with a Schiff-base ligand ($H_2L$ = N,N'-bis (salicylaldimine)-1,2-ethylenediamine) containing two N,O-bidentate chelate groups. Though the copper sites of $Cu_4L_4$ are non-coupled, the complex exhibits a unsually high catecholase-like activity ($k_{cat}=935h^{-1}$) when the $Cu_4L_4$ solution is treated with 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (3,5-DTBC) at basic condition in the presence of air. Combined information obtained from UV-VIS and EPR measurements could lead the suggestion of the reaction pathway in which the substrate may bind to Cu(II) ions by anti-anti didentate bridging mode.

  • Rifampicin reacts with cupric ion to produce rifampicin-Cu(II) chelate (2:1) at pH 6.5, which can be extracted with methylisobutylketone (MIBK). Therefore, rifampicin can be quantitatively, determined by measuring the quantity of Cu(II) in the organic phase by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Because higher absorbance ratio was obtained in pH 6.0~7.0, buffer solution at pH 6.5 was used in this measurement. Linear relationship was found between absorbance and concentration in the range of 1.0~4.0${\times}10^{-4}M$. This method might be applicable to the determination of rifampicin in the preparations.

  • Template condensation reactions of formaldehyde with appropriate tetramines and diamines in the presence of N(II) or Cu(II) ion produce square planar complexes of hexaaza macrotricyclic and macrotetracyclic ligands $[M(L)]^{2+}$(M = Ni(II) or Cu(II); L = 4-methyl-1,3,6,8,11,14-hexaazatricyclo[12,2,1,$1^{8,11}$]octadecane(C), 1,3,10,12,15,18-hexaazatetracyclo[16,2,1,$1^{12,15},0^{4,9}]$docosane(D) 4-methyl-1,3,6,8,12,15-hexaazatricyclo[13,3,1,$1^{8,12}$]eicosane(F), or 1,3,10,12,16,19-hexaazatetracyclo[l7,3,1,$1^{12,16},0^{4,9}]$tetracosane(G). These complexes contain two 1,3-diazacyclopentane or 1,3-diazacyclohexane rings in the six-membered chelate rings. The complexes of C and F contain one methyl group and those of D and G one cyclohexane ring in the five-membered chelate ring. Synthesis and characterization of the Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes are presented. The effects of the ligand structure on the equilibrium $[Ni(L)]^{2+}2H_2O{\rightleftharpoons}[Ni(L)(H_2O)_2]^{2+}$ in aqueous solutions are described.

  • A new organic reagent, 1-isonicotinoyl-2-furfurylidene hydrazine was synthesized from isonicotinic acid hydrazide and furfural, gives precipitate with copper(II), mercury(II) and argent(I), whereas, it gives a water soluble yellow complex with iron(III). Copper complex of the reagent is soluble in EtOH MtOH, pyridine, dioxane and dimethylformamide with green yellow coloration. The complex has a maximum absorption at 385 m.$\mu$ and molar ratio of copper; reagent was estimated as 1:1 by continuous variation method, slop method and chelate titration method. Molar extinction coefficient (9600) and apparant formation constant of this complex was spectrophotometrically determined. K=1.7 * $10^{7}$ (Babko's method) K=2.1 * $10^{7}$ (Anderson's method). This reagent reacted with copper so sensitive that it would be available for determination of Cu (II).

  • In order to investigate a practical application of fibrous adsorbents to heavy metal ions, amidoxime fibers, as a particular class of solid chelate agents, were prepared by hydroxylamine treatment for acrylic fibers in a recipe of neutralization. Among the important problems from plant effluents are toxic concentrations of heavy metals such as copper. Accordingly, the properties of Cu (II) adsorption and its chelates were studied. The results obtained are as follows; The fibrous adsorbents have the property of increasing the swelling volumes by amidoximation. The adsorption of Cu (II) ion is characterized by an endothermic reaction, which is estimated as the plus values in the enthalpy change ($\delta$H=1.30 Kcal/mol. and 3.14 Kcal/mol.). The Cu (II) ions are adsorbed in the range of pH $3\~8$ and the maximum adsorptions are occurred about pH 8. Owing to the anions $(NO_3^-,\;Cl^-)$ of copper salts, amidoxime fibers form 1:1 and 2:1 (ligand: metal) chelating complexes with Cu (II). The nitrate anion chelates to amide I (NH) of amidoxime groups and the chlorine anion does to nitrosyl (NO). These effects relate to the crystallization of the complex and the thermal property.

  • Immobilized metal ion affinity chromatography (IMAC) was used to separate various types of recombinant hirudins from the culture broth. The wild type hirudin exhibited a retention in Cu(II)-chelated affinity chromatgoraphy since it contained a single exposed histidine at position 51. To obtain a stronger retention on an IDA-Cu(II) column, the hirudin variants were genetically engineered to contain one or two histidine (s) more than the wild type. While the affinity of the variants for IDA-Cu(II) ligand increased in comparison to that of the wild type, the antithrombin activities reduced to a certain degree. Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) ions were applied separately to the metal chelate column to investigate ligand specificity with respect to protein retention. As a result, the Cu(II) chelated chromatography gave the best resolution for all the hirudins tested and appeared to be the only IMAC that could be used generally for the purification of hirudins with a decreasing pH gradient.

  • To develop a cotton derivatives with prolonged antimicrobial activities, homosulfamine (Hs) was coupled to cotton xanthate (CX) via chelate bond in the presence of Cu(II) ion by one- and two-bath processes. In one-bath process, CX was treated with Cu(II)-Hs solution. In two-bath process, CX was treated with Cu(II) ion solution to produce CX-Cu(II) complex, which was isolated and treated in turn with Hs solution. Effects of concentration, Cu(II)/Hs ratio, and pH on the binding of Hs were investigated at $10{\circ}C$ . In one-bath process, binding of hs took place readily with optimum pH around 5-6. the amount of binding increased to give a maximum within 5 min and decreased slowly to establish an equilibrium withhin an hour. In two-bath process, binding of Hs was much lower than that of one-bath process. Release of Hs from CX-Cu(II)-Hs was investigated by batch and flow method. antimicrobial activiteis of CX-Cu(II)-Hs was investigated by batch and flow method. Antimicrobial activities of CX-Cu(II)-Hs were tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli and it showed prolonged activity compared to that of free Hs.

  • New nickel(II) and coppr(II) complexes of a saturated pentaaza macrobicyclic ligand $[Ni(D)]^{2+},\;[Cu(D)]^{2+},\;and\;[Cu(D)Cl]^+$, where D is 1,3,6,9,12-pentaazabicyclo[10,2,l]pentadecane, have been prepared by the template condensation reaction of tetraethylenepentamine and formaldehyde in the presence of the metal ion. The complexes contain one imidazolidine ring in the macrobicyclic ligand, D. The complexes $[Ni(D)]^{2+}\;and\;[Cu(D)]^{2+}$ have square planar geometry with 5-5-5-6 chelate ring sequence. The electronic spectra of $[Cu(D)Cl]^+$indicate that the complex has square pyramidal geometry. Synthesis, charactrization, and the spectroscopic and chemical properties of the macrobicyclic nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes are described.
