The catalytic combustion of toluene was investigated on the Cu-Mn oxide catalysts prepared by the deposition-precipitation method. Experiment of toluene combustion was performed with a fixed bed flow reactor in the temperature range of $100{\sim}280^{\circ}C$. Among the catalysts, 1.29Cu/Mn showed the most activity at $260^{\circ}C$. The deposition-precipitation method may be showed the potential to enhance the activity of catalysts. The catalysts were characterized by BET, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. On the basis of catalyst characterization data, the results showed that the surface of catalysts by deposition-precipitation method had uniform distribution and smaller particle size, which enhanced the reduction capability of catalysts. The XRD results showed that $Cu_{1.5}Mn_{1.5}O_{4}$ spinel phase was made by deposition-precipitation method, and increased catalyst activity and redox characteristic. It was assumed that the reduction step of $Cu_{1.5}Mn_{1.5}O_{4}$ spinel phase progressed $Cu_{1.5}Mn_{1.5}O_{4}\;to\;CuMnO_{2},\;and\;Cu_{2}O\;to\;CuMn_{2}O_{4}\;and\;Cu$.
We investigated the structural, electrical and magnetic properties of Mn-doped $CuAlO_2$ delafossite ceramics ($CuAl_{1-x}Mn_{x}O_2,\;0\le\;x\;\le0.05$), synthesized by solid-state reaction method in an air atmosphere at a sintering temperature of $1150^{\circ}C$. The solubility limit of Mn ions in delafossite $CuAlO_2$ was found to be as low as about 3 $mol\%$. Positive Hall coefficient and the temperature dependence of conductivity established that non-doped $CuAlO_2$ ceramic is a variable-range hopping p-type semiconductor. It was found that the Mn-doping in $CuAlO_2$ rapidly reduced the hole concentration and conductivity, indicating compensation of free holes. The analysis of the magnetization data provided an evidence that antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction is the dominant mechanism of the exchange coupling between Mn ions in $CuAl_{1-x}Mn_{x}O$ alloy, leading to an almost paramagnetic behavior in this alloy.
Textured bulk $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ superconductors samples were grown directionally using different precursors of $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ power. and a mixture of $YBa_2Cu_3O_5, BaCuO_2 and CuO$ powder. The microstructures and superconducting properties of the samples were compared. The mixture powder produced better microstructures i.e. dense and crack-free so that a higher critical current density was achieved at the same hot-zone temperature of 115$0^{\circ}C$ than the reacted powder does. When the reacted powder used as a precursor, as the hot-zone temperature increased upto 1215$^{\circ}C$, the texture of the sample improved and the critical current density increased. The amount of melt in the sample is of secondary importance for the growth of superconducting $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ grains. The microstructures and superconductivity of good quality superconductors grown directionally were more strongly influenced by the kind of precursor rather than the amount og melt in a sample.
Single crystal EPR spectra of K12[As2W18O66Cu3(H2O)2]${\cdot}$11H2O exhibit an orientation-dependent fine structure of an S = 3/2 system which is accounted for by the exchange and magnetic dipole interactions among the three Cu2+ ions. The hyperfine structure and the lines from the S = 1/2 manifolds have not been observed. The isotropic exchange parameters determined from the magnetic susceptibility data at 5-300 K are J1 = J2 =-7.8 cm-1. The magnitude of J values suggests that the unpaired electrons on three Cu2+ ions interact through a sequence of six bonds involving two tungsten atoms and three oxygen atoms. The Cu-Cu distance, 4.37 $\AA$, determined from the EPR spectra is considerably smaller than the value from the X-ray crystal structure determination, 4.76 $\pm$ 0.03 $\AA$, indicating that the point-dipole model underestimates the dipolar interaction.

Reaction characteristics of simultaneous removal of SOx and NOx have been investigated in a thermogravimetric analyzer and tubular fixed bed reactor using the $CuO/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ sorbent/catalyst. Sulfur removal capacity of $CuO/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ sorbent/catalyst is largely enhanced above both the temperature of $450^{\circ}C$ and the loading of 6wt% due to the participation of alumina support in a sulfation reaction. The NO reduction efficiency of 8wt% $CuO/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ sorbent/catalyst shows the maximum value at $370^{\circ}C$ and then decreases with the increase of reaction temperature due to the oxidation of $NH_3$ gas. The presence of sulfate on the surface of sorbent/catalyst enhances the optimum reaction temperature showing the maximum deNOx efficiency. In the simultaneous removal of SOx and NOx at $250^{\circ}C$. deNOx activity of $CuO/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ sorbent/catalyst is rapidly decreased due to the formation of ammonium salts such as $NH_4HSO_4$. In the simultaneous removal reaction of SOx and NOx, the optimum temperature showing the maximum deNOx efficiency increases to $400^{\circ}C$ due to the presence of $SO_2$ gas.
Cu-Zn and Cu-Zn-Ti catalysts for the steam reforming of methanol were prepared. This reaction was carried out at atmospheric pressure, $250^{\circ}C$, steam/methanol molar ratio 1.5, and contact time 0.1 g-cat.hr/mL-feed. In case of the catalyst with 3 mol% of $TiO_2$, the activity was superior to that of catalysts without $TiO_2$. The reaction products were mainly hydrogen and carbon dioxide. It was found that catalytic activity was not related to specific surface area but affected by metallic copper area which was measured by $N_2O$ decomposition and increased with the addition of $TiO_2$ content. XPS and XRD showed that the oxidation state of zinc was not changed during reaction, but oxidation states of copper existed in Cu(0) or Cu(I).

The superconducting properties of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$$O_{7-x}$(YBaCuO) thin films prepared by laser ablation have been investigated. The x-ray diffraction patterns and surface morphology of the films were substantially different from one another. The compositional ratios of YBaCuO films were controlled by the conditions of the target-substrate distance. The YBaCuO films manufactured on MgO(100) substrate were indicated T$_{c}$(zero)=91.2 K, T$_{c}$(onset)=93 K, and J$_{c}$=3.5*10$^{5}$ A/cm$^{2}$(at 77.3K). The optimum conditions were found to be a substrate temperature of 710 .deg. C, a energy density of 2 J/cm$^{2}$, and a target-substrate distance of 60 mm in an oxygen partial pressure of 200 mTorr.0 mTorr.
In this study, the fabrication of $Al_2O_3$/5vol.%Cu nanocomposite and its mechanical property were discussed. The nanocomposite powders were produced by high energy ball milling of $Al_2O_3$ and Cu elemental powders. The ball-milled powders were sintered with Pulse Electric Current Sintering (PECS) facility. The relative densities of specimens sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$ and $1250^{\circ}C$ after soaking process at $900^{\circ}C$ were 96% and over 97%, respectively. The sintered microstructures were composed of $Al_2O_3$ matrix and the nano-sized Cu particles distributed on grain boundaries of $Al_2O_3$ matrix. The nanocomposite exhibited the enhanced fracture toughness compared with general monolithic $Al_2O_3$. The toughness increase was explained by the crack deflection and bridging by dispersed Cu particles.
The oxidation behavior of Ag-36.8a%Cu-7.4at%Ti alloy brazed on Si3N4 substrate was investigated at 400, 500 and 600$^{\circ}C$ in air. Under this experimental condition Si3N4 and Ag were not oxidized whereas Cu and Ti among the brazing alloy components were oxidizied obeying the parabolic oxidation rate law. The activation energy of oxidation was found to be 80kj/ mol which was smaller than that of pure Cu owing to the presence of oxygen active element of Ti. The outer oxide scale formed from the initial oxidation state was always composed of Cu oxides which were known to be growing by the outward diffusion of Cu ions. As the oxidation progressed the concentration gradient occurred due to the continuous consumption of Cu as Cu oxides and consequently build-up of an Ag-enriched layer below the Cu oxides resulted in the formation of multiple oxide scales composed of Cu oxide (CuO) /Ag-enriched layer/Cu oxide (Cu2O) /Ag-enriched layer. Also the inward diffusing of oxygen through Cu oxide and Ag-enriched layers led to the formation of internal oxides of TiO2.

In this study we synthesized mesoporous carbon supported CuO by using mesoporous silica i.e. SBA-15 as the template and cupric nitrate trihydrate ($Cu(NO_3)_23H_2O$)as copper source. The porous CuO was characterized with XRD, TGA, SEM and BET. The result reveals porous CuO has good crystal structure with uniform size of spherical crystal particles. The surface are a ($S_{BET}$) of porous CuO was found to be $153.46m^2g^{-1}$ with a total pore volume ($V_p$)of$0.1516cm^3g^{-1}$ and average pore size of 3.9 nm which was much higher than that of commercial CuO ($S_{BET}$, $7.6m^2g^{-1}$; $V_p$, $0.01cm^3g^{-1}$). The obtained porous CuO was studied for adsorption of $CO_2$and the maximum $CO_2$ adsorption capacity was found to be 67.5 mg/g of the sorbent at $25^{\circ}C$.
