  • Quench Detection System (QDS) is essential to guarantee the stable operation of the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) Poloidal Field (PF) magnet system because the stored energy in the magnet system is very large. For the fast response, voltage-based QDS has been used. Co-wound voltage sensors and balanced bridge circuits were applied to eliminate the inductive voltages generated during the plasma operation. However, as the inductive voltages are hundreds times higher than the quench detection voltage during the pulse-current operation, Central Difference Averaging (CDA) and MIK, where I and K stand for mutual coupling indexes of different circuits, which is an active cancellation of mutually generated voltages have been suggested and studied. In this paper, the CDA and MIK technique were applied to the KSTAR magnet for PF magnet quench detection. The calculated inductive voltages from the MIK and measured voltages from the CDA circuits were compared to eliminate the inductive voltages at result signals.

  • The estimation of the concentration of hydroxyl radical (OH) in the atmosphere is essential to build atmospheric models and to understand the mechanisms of the reactions involved in OH. Although water vapor is one of the most abundant species in the troposphere, only a few studies have been performed for the reaction of OH and water vapor. Here I demonstrate an ab initio study on the complex forming reation of OH with $H_2O$ in the gas phase performed based on density functional theory to calculate the reaction rate and the energy states of the reactant and the OH-$H_2O$ complex. The structure of the complex, which belongs to the Cs point group, was optimized at global minima. The transition state was not found at the B3LYP and MP2 levels of theory. Rate constants of the forward and the reverse reactions were calculated as $1.1{\times}10^{-16}cm^3\;molecule^{-1}\;s^{-1}$ and $5.3{\times}10^9\;s^{-1}$, respectively. The extremely slow rates of complex forming reaction and the resulting hydrogen atom exchange reaction of OH and $H_2O$, which are consistent with experimentally determined values, imply a negligible possibility of a change in OH reactivity through the title reaction.

  • Damage detection has been proven to be a challenging task in structural health monitoring (SHM) due to the fact that damage cannot be measured. The difficulty associated with damage detection is related to electing a feature that is sensitive to damage occurrence and evolution. This difficulty increases as the damage size decreases limiting the ability to detect damage occurrence at the micron and submicron length scale. Damage detection at this length scale is of interest for sensitive structures such as aircrafts and nuclear facilities. In this paper a new photonic sensor based on photonic crystal (PhC) technology that can be synthesized at the nanoscale is introduced. PhCs are synthetic materials that are capable of controlling light propagation by creating a photonic bandgap where light is forbidden to propagate. The interesting feature of PhC is that its photonic signature is strongly tied to its microstructure periodicity. This study demonstrates that when a PhC sensor adhered to polymer substrate experiences micron or submicron damage, it will experience changes in its microstructural periodicity thereby creating a photonic signature that can be related to damage severity. This concept is validated here using a three-dimensional integrated numerical simulation.

  • Having its roots in medical applications, industrial gamma ray CT has opened up new roads far investigating and modeling industrial processes. Using a line of research related to industrial gamma ray CT, the authors set up a system of single source and detector gamma transmission tomography for wood timber and a packed bed phantom. The hardware of the CT system consists of two servo motors, a data logger, a computer, a radiation source and a radiation detector. One motor simultaneously moves the source and the detector for a parallel beam scanning, whereas the other motor rotates the scan table at a preset projection angle. The image is reconstructed from the measured projections by the filtered back projection method. The phantom was designed to simulate a cross section of a packed bed with a void. The radiation source was 20mCi of Cs-137 and the detector was a 1 inch $\times$ 1 inch NaI (TI) scintillator shielded by a lead collimator. The experimental gamma ray CT image has sufficient resolution to reveal air holes and the density distribution inside the phantom. The system could possibly be applied to a packed bed column or a pipe flow in a petrochemical plant.

  • Aluminum alloy is one of light weight material and it is used to make LNG tank and ship. However, in order to weld aluminum alloy high density heat source is needed. In this paper, I-butt welding of Al 5083 with 6mm thickness using Plasma-MIG welding was carried out. The experiment was performed to investigate the influence of plasma-MIG welding parameters such as plasma current, wire feeding rate, MIG-welding voltage and welding speed on the tensile strength of weld. In addition we suggested 3 strength estimation models which are second order polynomial regression model, multiple nonlinear regression model and neural network model. The estimation performance of 3 models was evaluated in terms of average error rate (AER) and their values were 0.125, 0.238, and 0.021 respectively. Neural network model which has training concept and reflects non -linearity was best estimation performance.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the level of trust by financial consumers and attempt to investigate the determinants that influence consumer trust in internet-only banks. For this aim, I conducted an empirical study and the survey results was used to test a structural equation model that analyzed the financial consumer trust and estimated the level of trust for internet-only banks. As a result of the analysis, the three most effective determinants of trust were security, convenience and benefit. Also, the level of financial consumer trust for the internet-only banks, based on the three factors, was later extended to relationship commitment such as renewal and recommendation intentions. Therefore, Internet-only banks need to focus on promoting their trust more effectively for future sustainable growth.

  • In a recent study by the same authors using a DMTA (Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analyzer), it was found that the 4-aminobenzoic arid (ABA) molecules acted as either a neutralizing agent, or a plasticizer, or a filler, depending on the order of mixing of poly(styrene-co-styrenesulfonic acid) (PSSA), ABA, and NaOH. Subsequent to that study, we here pursued the same topic, i.e., the effect of the addition of CsOH (instead of NaOH) and ABA on the morphology of PSSA, but this time, by using a small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique. In line with the previous results, the present study with the SAXS technique verified that the order of mixing has a significant effect on the morphology of ionomers. In addition, with the SAXS data and the density values of the ionomers, we attempted to calculate both the number of sulfonate ionic groups per multiplet and the size of the multiplet of the ionomer.

  • This work presents the results of laboratory scale tests of the CARBOFLUOREX (CARBOnate FLUORide EXtraction) process - a novel technology for the recovery of U and Pu from the solid fluorides residue (fluorination ash) of Fluoride Volatility Method (FVM) reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel (SNF). To study the oxidative leaching of U from the fluorination ash (FA) by Na2CO3 or Na2CO3-H2O2 solutions followed by solvent extraction by methyltrioctylammonium carbonate in toluene and purification of U from the fission products (FPs) impurities we used a surrogate of FA consisting of UF4 or UO2F2, and FPs fluorides with stable isotopes of Ce, Zr, Sr, Ba, Cs, Fe, Cr, Ni, La, Nd, Pr, Sm. Purification factors of U from impurities at the solvent extraction refining stage reached the values of 104-105, and up to 106 upon the completion of the processing cycle. Obtained results showed a high efficiency of the CARBOFLUOREX process for recovery and separating of U from FPs contained in FA, which allows completing of the FVM cycle with recovery of U and Pu from hardly processed FA.

  • The equilibrium geometrical structures of silver atom clusters at their electronic ground states have been theo-retically determined by using the nonrelativistic semiempirical INDO/1 method. The clusters investigated are Agn, Agn+, and Agn- (n = 7 , 8, 9). In order to find the most stable structure, i.e., the global minimum in energy hypersurface, geometry optimization and energy calculation processes have been repeatedly performed for all the possible graphical models by changing the bond parameters (resonance integral values). The heptamers are pentagonal bipyramidal-Ag7(D5h), Ag7+ (D5h), Ag7- (D5h); the octamers are pentagonal bipyramidal with one atom capped-Ag8(D2d), Ag8+ (Cs), Ag8- (D2d); the nonamers are pentagonal bipyramidal with two atoms capped -Ag9(C2v), Ag9+ (C2v), Ag9- (C2v). Our structures are in good agreement with those by ab initio calculations ex-cept for the anionic Ag9- cluster. And it is noted that the INDO/1 method can accurately predict the Ag cluster geometries when a proper set of bond parameters is used.
