  • This study conducted the gamma ray spectroscopic analysis of the microcolumnar CsI:Tl deposited onto the SiPMs using thermal evaporation deposition. The SEM measured thickness of microcolumnar CsI:Tl and of its individual columns. From the SEM observation, the measured thickness of CsI:Tl were $450{\mu}m$ and $600{\mu}m$. The gamma ray spectroscopic properties of microcolumnar CsI:Tl, $450{\mu}m$ and $600{\mu}m$ thick deposited onto the SiPMs were analyzed using standard gamma ray sources $^{133}Ba$ and $^{137}Cs$. The spectroscopic analysis of microcolumnar CsI:Tl deposited onto the SiPMs included the measurements of response linearity over the $^{137}Cs$ gamma ray intensity; and gamma ray energy spectrum. Furthermore from the gamma ray spectrum measurement of $^{133}Ba$ and $^{137}Cs$, $450{\mu}m$ thick CsI:Tl showed good efficiency when measured with $^{133}Ba$ and $600{\mu}m$ thick CsI:Tl was highly efficient when measured with $^{137}Cs$.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the features of CsI:Tl and $Gd_2O_2S$ detectors with an indirect conversion method using phantom in the DR (digital radiography) system by obtaining images of thick chest phantom, medium thickness thigh phantom, and thin hand phantom and by analyzing the SNR and CNR. As a result of measuring the SNR and CNR according to the thickness change of the subject, the SNR and CNR were higher in CsI:Tl detector than in $Gd_2O_2S$ detector when the medium thickness thigh phantom and thin hand phantom were scanned. However, when the thick chest phantom was used, for the SNR at 80~125 kVp and the CNR at 80~110 kVp in the $Gd_2O_2S$ detector, the values were higher than those of CsI:Tl detector. The SNR and CNR both increased as the tube voltage increased. The SNR and CNR of CsI:Tl detector in the medium thickness thigh phantom increased at 40~50 kVp and decreased as the tube voltage increased. The SNR and CNR of $Gd_2O_2S$ detector increased at 40~60 kVp and decreased as the tube voltage increased. The SNR and CNR of CsI:Tl detctor in the thin hand phantom decreased at the low tube voltage and increased as the tube voltage increased, but they decreased again at 100~110 kVp, while the SNR and CNR of $Gd_2O_2S$ detector were found to decrease as the tube voltage increased. The MTF of CsI:Tl detector was 6.02~90.90% higher than that of $Gd_2O_2S$ detector at 0.5~3 lp/mm. The DQE of CsI:Tl detector was 66.67~233.33% higher than that of $Gd_2O_2S$ detector. In conclusion, although the values of CsI:Tl detector were higher than those of $Gd_2O_2S$ detector in the comparison of MTF and DQE, the cheaper $Gd_2O_2S$ detector had higher SNR and CNR than the expensive CsI:Tl detector at a certain tube voltage range in the thick check phantom. At chest X-ray, if the $Gd_2O_2S$ detector is used rather than the CsI:Tl detector, chest images with excellent quality can be obtained, which will be useful for examination. Moreover, price/performance should be considered when determining the detector type from the viewpoint of the user.

  • A position-sensitive CsI(Tl) crystal array coupled with the multi-anode position sensitive photomultiplier tube (PS-PMT), Hamamatsu H8500C, has been developed at the Institute of Modern Physics. An effective, fast, and economical readout circuit based on discretized positioning circuit (DPC) bridge was designed for the 64-channel multi-anode flat panel PSPMT. The horizontal and vertical position resolutions are 0.58 mm and 0.63 mm respectively for the 1.0 × 1.0 × 5.0 ㎣ CsI(Tl) array, and the horizontal and vertical position resolutions are 0.86 mm and 0.80 mm respectively for the 2.0 × 2.0 × 10.0 ㎣ CsI(Tl) array. These results show that the CsI(Tl) crystal array with low cost could be applied in the fields of medical imaging and high-resolution gamma camera.

  • In recent years, there has been keen interest in developing f1at panel detectors for all modalities of radiology, including gerneral radiology, fluoroscopy(angiography and cardiology), electronic portal imaging, and mammography. In this paper, we report the new hybrid x-ray detector consisted of CsI(Tl) photoemission layer and a-Se photoconductor layer to resolve conventional x-ray detector such as the direct detector using a-Se and the indirect detector using CsI(Tl)/a-Si. To design the structure of CsI(Tl)/a-Se detector, the penetrated energy spectrum and absorption fraction was estimated using MCNP 4C code. Experimental results showed that the absorption fraction of $500{\mu}m-Se$ film and $150{\mu}m-CsI\left(Tl \right)/a-Se\left( 30{\mu}m \right)$ film is 70% at 70 kVp. The absorption energy is 90% at $350{\mu}m-CsI(Tl)$.

  • CsI(Tl), $CdWO_4(CWO),\;Bi_4Ge_3O_{12}(BGO)\;and\;Gd_2SiO_5:Ce(GSO)$ scintillators were studied to manufacture a phoswich detector. The maximum wavelengths of the CsI(Tl), CWO, BGO and GSO scintillators are 550 nm, 475 nm, 490 nm and 440 nm for the radioluminescence, and the absolute light outputs of the CsI(Tl), CWO, BGO and GSO scintillators are 54890 phonon/MeV, 17762 phonon/MeV, 8322 phonon/MeV and 8932 phonon/MeV with a neutral filter, and the decay time of the CsI(Tl), CWO, BGO and GSO scintillators is $1.3{\mu}s,\;8.17{\mu}s$, 213 ns and 37 ns by a single photon method. The phoswich detector which was manufactured with plastic and CsI(Tl) scintillators could separate the ${\beta}$ particle and ${\gamma}$ ray. The phoswich detector could also measure the pulse height spectra of the ${\beta}$ particle and ${\gamma}$ ray by a PSD method.

  • Columnar-structured cesium iodide (CsI) scintillators doped with thallium (Tl) are frequently used as x-ray converters in medical and industrial imaging. In this study we investigated the imaging characteristics of CsI:Tl films with various reflective layers-aluminum (Al), chromium (Cr), and titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) powder-coated on glass substrates. We used two effusion-cell sources in a thermal evaporator system to fabricate CsI:Tl films on substrates. The scintillators were observed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and scintillation characteristics were evaluated on the basis of the emission spectrum, light output, light response to x-ray dose, modulation transfer function (MTF), and x-ray images. Compared to control films without a reflective layer, CsI:Tl films with reflective layers showed better sensitivity and light collection efficiency, and the film with a $TiO_2$ reflective layer showed the best properties.

  • Using the Monte Carlo simulation, a study on the lion-proportionality of the prototype phoswich detector with $2'{\times}2'$ CSI(Tl) and plastic scintillator, which was made by KAERI, has been carried. The defector response functions (DRFs) calculated by simulations were compared with the experimental measurement on the $^{137}Cs\;and\;^{60}Co$. To precisely simulate the DRF for the phoswich, the CSI(Tl) non-proportionality was calculated using the electron response and the simplified electron cascade sequence for treating the photoelectric absorption event. The resulting DRFs of $^{137}Cs\;and\;^{60}Co$ sources obtained by simulations were compared with experiments for verification. For $^{137}Cs$, gamma-ray responses simulated by MCNP5 are generally good agreement with the measured ones. But the DRF of $^{60}Co$ does not match well with the results of experiment in the energy region below second peak due to the coincidence effect of two gamma-rays (1.17 MeV and 1.33 MeV). Through the analysis of the non-proportionality of CsI(Tl) in the prototype phoswich, the improved DRFs considering non-proportionality were produced and the simulation results were verified using the experimental measurements. However, to more precisely reproduce the DRF for the phoswich, further studies in relation to the electron channeling effect and the Doppler broadening effect of a scintillator are still needed as well as considering that effect of the transfer contribution.

  • Micro-columnar CsI(Tl) is the most popular scintillator material which is used for many indirect digital X-ray imaging detectors. The light scattering at the surface of micro-columnar CsI(Tl) scintillator was studied to find the correlation between the surface roughness and the resultant image resolution of indirect X-ray imaging detectors. Using a commercially available optical simulation program, Light Tools, MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) curves of the CsI(Tl) film thermally evaporated on glass substrate with different thickness were calculated and compared with the experimental estimation of MTF values by the edge X-ray image method and CCD camera. It was found that the standard deviation value of Gaussian scattering model which is determined by the surface roughness of micro-columns could certainly change the MTF value of image sensors. This model and calculation methodology will be beneficial to estimate the overall performance of indirect X-ray imaging system with CsI(Tl) scintillator film for optimum design depending on its application.

  • Spherical NaI(Tl) detectors are used in gamma-ray spectrometry, where the gamma emissions come from the nuclei with energies in the range from a few keV up to 10 MeV. A spherical detector is aimed to give a good response to photons, which depends on their direction of travel concerning the detector center. Some distortions in the response of a gamma-ray detector with a different geometry can occur because of the non-uniform position of the source from the detector surface. The present work describes the calibration of a NaI(Tl) spherical detector using both an experimental technique and a numerical simulation method (NSM). The NSM is based on an efficiency transfer method (ETM, calculating the effective solid angle, the total efficiency, and the full-energy peak efficiency). Besides, there is a high probability for a source-to-detector distance less than 15 cm to have pulse coincidence summing (CS), which may occur when two successive photons of different energies from the same source are detected within a very short response time. Therefore, γ-γ ray CS factors are calculated numerically for a 152Eu radioactive cylindrical source. The CS factors obtained are applied to correct the measured efficiency values for the radioactive volumetric source at different energies. The results show a good agreement between the NSM and the experimental values (after correction with the CS factors).
