  • Multi-output VC-TCXO (Voltage Controlled-Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillator) for WCDMA has integrated the additional CMOS inverter, so it can be normal clipped sinewave output and additional CMOS output and it can be satisfied the VC-TCXO Characteristics that WCDMA system required. In this paper, however 26MHz is used for reference frequency, similarly and practically, it is usable from 10MHz to 40MHz, Most important factor to integrate CMOS inverter internally is the isolation between normal output and additional output. For this, it is separated in package design, due to this, when it isn't used additional output, it shows the same electrical performance, when it is used additional output, it has minimum-rized the interference. and then the important characteristics in reference oscillator are met to WCDMA system's requirements, like phase noise and frequency short term stability.

  • This study was conducted to develop a soil moisture meter using capacitance probe. A parallel cylinder type capacitance probe (C-probe) was fabricated The 5 MHz of crystal oscillator was constructed to detect the capacitance change of the C-probe with moist soil. A third order polynomial regression model for volumetric water content having oscillation frequency changes at 5 MHz as independent variables presented the determination coefficient of 0.979 and root mean square error of $0.031\;cm^{3}cm^{3}$ for all soil samples. A prototype soil moisture meter consisting of the sample container, C-probe, oscillator, frequency counter and related signal procession units presented the correlation coefficient of 0.987 and the root mean square error of $0.032\;cm^{3}cm^{3}$ as compared with the oven drying method for unknown soil samples.

  • This paper describes a frequency synthesizer designed in a $0.25{\mu}m$ CMOS technology for using local oscillators for the IF stages. The design is focused mainly on low-power characteristics. A simple ring-oscillator based VCO is used, where a single control signal can be used for variable resistors. The designed PLL includes all building blocks for elimination of external components, other than the crystal, and its operating frequency can be programmed by external data. It operates in the frequency range of 250MHz to 800MHz and consumes l.08mA at 500MHz from a 2.5V supply. The measured phase noise is -85dBc/Hz in-band and -105dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset. The die area is $1.09mm^2$

  • In mobile communication instruments, realization of the frequency synthesizer with high stabililty in temperature is very important. In order to realize a high stability frequency synthesizer, the oscillator providing for reference frequency must be stabilized in various temperature. In accordance to this requirement, the TCXO using digital method is rrealized in this thesis. The DTCXO consists of temperature sensing part, control part and the VCXO. The frequency stability of the realized DTCXO is 0.94 ppm on average. This is an improved result when compared with the 2.5 ppm of the TCXO using analog method.

  • Implantable closed-loop epilepsy controllers require ideally both accurate epileptic seizure detection and low power consumption. On-chip oscillators can be used in implantable devices because they consume less power than other oscillators such as crystal oscillators. In this study, we investigated the tolerable error range of a lower power on-chip oscillator without losing the accuracy of seizure detection. We used 24 ictal and 14 interictal intracranial electroencephalographic segments recorded from epilepsy surgery patients. The performance variations with respect to oscillator frequency errors were estimated in terms of specificity, modified sensitivity, and detection timing difference of seizure onset using Generic Osorio Frei Algorithm. The frequency errors of on-chip oscillators were set at ${\pm}10%$ as the worst case. Our results showed that an oscillator error of ${\pm}10%$ affected both specificity and modified sensitivity by less than 3%. In addition, seizure onsets were detected with errors earlier or later than without errors and the average detection timing difference varied within less than 0.5 s range. The results suggest that on-chip oscillators could be useful for low-power implantable devices without error compensation circuitry requiring significant additional power. These findings could help the design of closed-loop systems with a seizure detector and automated stimulators for intractable epilepsy patients.

  • We established the laser oscillator using Nd:YAG crystal grown at Ssang Yong company in Korea and investigated the characteristics of oscillation, Q-switching and wave front of output beam. We measured the single pass gain by controlling the threshold input energy with two output couplers of different output reflectances. Moreover, we compared the gain measured by different output couplers with the gain directly measured by the laser amplifier. The peak power of Q-switching, the pulse width, and the single pass gain coefficient at the threshold energy were 1.5 MW, 30ns, and 0.0958 cm-$^1$ respectively and they were compared with those of the commercial Nd:YAG crystal. Our crystal was proved to be as good as the commercial crystal.

  • Optical parametric oscillator(OPO) has been used to generate coherent and tunable laser source with birefringent phase-matching technique in various nonlinear materials. In birefringent phase-matching, the output wavelength is controlled with angle or temperature tuning of the refractive index. However these tuning methods have several limitations such as restriction of tuning wavelength due to reasonable angular and temperature tuning ranges, Poynting vector walk-off which limits the interaction length, and thermal stabilization time. • Most of single frequency GPS receivers utilize low-quality crystal oscillators. If a lowquality crystal oscillator is utilized as the time reference of a GPS receiver, the receiver's clock bias grows very fast due to its inherent low precision and poor stability. To prevent the clock bias becoming too large, large clock jumps are intentionally injected to the clock bias and the time offset for clock steering purpose. The abrupt changes in the clock bias and the time offset, if not properly considered, induce serious accuracy degradation in relative differential positioning. To prevent the accuracy degradation, this paper proposes an efficient and systematic method to eliminate the undesirable clock jump effects. Experiment results based on real measurements verify the effectiveness of the propose method.

  • A biosensor with PZT piezoelectric ceramic crystal was developed for the detection of formaldehyde gas. Poled PZT piezoelectric ceramic disk was made from ZrO2, TiO2 and Nb2O5, together with the addition of PbO and polyvinyl alcohol, through various processes of mixing, calcination drying, crushing, forming, sintering, polishing, ion coating and poling. Oscillator circuit of sensor was made of operational amplifier(AD811AN). Formaldehyde dehydrogenase was immobilized onto a piezoelectic ceramic crystal, together with the cofactors, reduced glutathione and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. The effect of flow rate on the sensitivity was determined by varing the flow rate of carrier gas from 24.7mL/min to 111.7mL/min through detector cell. The results indicated that as the flow rate was increased, the recovery rate was increased. And a significant increase in the sensitivity was observed in enhanced flow rate of carrier gas. Frequency difference(ΔF) of immobilized PZT piezoelectic disk increased proportionally to the concentration gas and reproduced to repeated exposures of formaldehyde gas(28ppm, Δ68Hz).
