  • The conduction cooling HTS SMES magnet is operated in cryogenic temperature. The insulation design at cryogenic temperature is an important element that should be established to accomplish miniaturization that is a big advantage of HTS SMES. However, the behaviors of insulators for cryogenic conditions in air or vacuum are virtually unknown. Therefore, we need active research and development of insulation concerning application of the conduction cooling HTS SMES. Specially, this paper was studied about high vacuum and cryogenic temperature breakdown and flashover discharge characteristics between cryocooler and magnet-coil. The breakdown and surface flashover discharge characteristics were experimented at cryogenic temperature and vacuum. Also, we were experimented about mechanical properties of 4-point bending test. From the results, we confirmed that about research between cryocooler and magnet-coil established basic data in the insulation design.

  • An analysis of chill-down process was performed for 30 tonf Turbopump-Gas generator coupled tests. The chill-down process must be fulfilled before liquid rocket engine test using cryogenic propellant. Cavitation, damage and/or combustion instability due to bubble of propellant must be eliminated by chill-down process in a test specimen, especially cryogenic pump. The analysis of test data obtained by 30 tonf TP-GG coupled tests was performed in order to be based on the test process of KSLV-II liquid propellant rocket engine which will be developed. To macroscopically understand the process of chill-down from the viewpoint of test procedure the temperatures of important part and total time of chill-down process were analyzed.

  • Retention of interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of polymer composites at cryogenic temperature application is very important. In this work, single carbon tiber reinforced epoxy compositc was used to evaluate IFSS and apparent modulus under room and cryogenic temperatures. The property change of carbon and selected epoxy for particularly cryogenic temperature application were tested in tension and compression. Tensile strength and elongation of carbon fiber decreased at cryogenic temperature, whereas tensile modulus was almost same. On the other hand, epoxy matrix showed the increased tensile strength but decreased elongation. It can be due to maximum thermal contraction existing free volume in cryogenic temperature. IFSS increased up to $-10^{\circ}C$ and then decreased steadily. However, IFSS at cryogenic temperature was still similar to that at room temperature. This result is very useful to cryogenic application since selected epoxy toughness and interfacial adhesion can keep at such low temperature.

  • The advantages of a printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) are the compactness and efficiency derived from its heat-transfer characteristics; furthermore, a PCHE for which a diffusion bonding method was used during production can be applied to extreme environments such as a cryogenic condition. In this study, a micro-channel PCHE fabricated by diffusion bonding was investigated in a cryogenic environment regarding its thermal performance and the pressure drop. The test rig consists of an LN2 storage tank, vaporizers, heaters, and a cold box, whereby the vaporized cryogenic nitrogen flows in hot and cold streams. The overall heat-transfer coefficients were evaluated and compared with traditional correlations. Lastly, we suggested the modified heat-transfer correlations for a PCHE in a cryogenic condition.

  • Cooling by gas helium circulation can be used for various HTS (high temperature superconductor) magnets operating at 20~40 K, and a cryogenic blower is an essential device for circulating gas helium in the cooling system. The performance of the cryogenic blower is determined by various design parameters such as the impeller diameter, the blade number, the vane angle, the volute cross-sectional area, and the rotating speed. The trailing edge angle and the height of impeller vane are also key design factors in determining the blower performance. This study describes the design, fabrication and performance evaluation of cryogenic blower to produce a flow rate of 30 g/s at 5 bar, 35 K gas helium. The impeller shape is designed using a specific speed/specific diameter diagram and CFD analysis. After the fabrication of the cryogenic blower, a test equipment is also developed using a GM cryocooler. The measured flow rates and the pressure differences are compared with the design values at various rotating speeds and the results show a good agreement. Isentropic efficiency is also evaluated using the measured pressures and temperatures.

  • Superconducting equipment has been actively investigated for securing the environment and energy technology (ET) in various parts of the world. Despite these movements, a high voltage cryogenic bushing, which plays an important role of interconnection between the electric power systems and superconducting devices, has not been fully developed due to severe insulation requirements. A gas insulated cryogenic bushing has been investigated as one of our projects since 2010. As a basic step to obtain the design parameters for cryogenic bushing, we focused on the surface flashover characteristics of glass fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) in several insulation gases. For the surface flashover tests, several insulation gases including $SF_6$, $CF_4$ and $N_2$ gas were prepared. Various length of FRP specimens were fabricated in order to obtain the fundamental data for creepage distance of FRP. The first specimen group was from 2 mm to 10 mm with 2 mm intervals and the second specimen group was from 20 mm to 100 mm with 20 mm intervals. And the gas pressure was varied from 1 bar to 4 bar. An AC overvoltage test and a lightning impulse test were performed. Then the experimental results of surface flashover were obtained and analyzed. Based on these results, it would be possible to design the optimum creepage distance of FRP in a cryogenic bushing.

  • Natural frequencies of a cryogenic fuel tank of LNG vehicle were computed to check the safety related to the resonances, and tests were performed to confirm the vibrational durability of a cryogenic fuel tank. There were 3 tests. The first test started at excitation frequency of 31.9Hz, and the test was performed reducing the excitation frequencies. Failure took place at 22.1Hz. The second test was performed with the frequencies to be increased. At 12.7 Hz, failure took place and nitrogen gas was exhausted. In the third test, the excitation frequencies were continuously changed, and the vibration port was failed in the range between 8 Hz and 19.3 Hz. Detailed research on the failed parts of the tank in this study is recommended to enhance the safety of the cryogenic fuel tanks of LNG vehicles.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the basic design of a submerged cryogenic pump, which is a two stage impeller pump. We limited this study to the impeller design of the submerged pump. We calculated its velocity triangle based on the impeller blade configuration and, in order to check its natural frequency, we carried out a modal test using a finite element method (FEM) analysis. Basically, modal test results had quite similar to FEM analysis.

  • Cold flow injection test was conducted to investigate the characteristics of cryogenic liquid nitrogen jet at sub to supercritical condition. Single jet injector element was installed in high pressure chamber to investigate the effect of ambient pressure around the jet, injector geometry and flow conditions. Experimental results showed obvious differences between jet characteristics under subcritical and supercritical condition. Effect of injector inlet shape also was investigated.

  • For developing the cryogenic air separation unit, it requires some technology such as basic process design. equipment design and manufacturing based on the cryogenic physical properties and separation theory. In this study, we developed a process and equipment for producing high purity nitrogen which has the production capacity of 1600N㎥/h under 1 ppm $O_2$ and $H_2O$. Also we found that the number of theoretical plate(NTP) of distillation column was 44 and maximum nitrogen recovery ration of this process was 42% from the process simulation. The performance test was also carried out for the nitrogen recovery ratio and equipment efficiency. The results showed that the optimum nitrogen recovery was 41% and the maximum equipment efficiency was attained.
