  • A research on several characteristics such as volume breakdown and surface discharge of insulators for a termination of power transmission class HTS cable was performed. We investigated the surface discharge of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) under air, cryogenic nitrogen gas and nitrogen gas media. The breakdown characteristics of these media were studied. Experimental results revealed that flashover voltage greatly depends on pressure, temperature, the kinds of insulating media and voltages, but it is slightly affected by shape and material of electrode. The breakdown voltage of liquid nitrogen, cryogenic nitrogen gas and nitrogen gas deeply depends on the shape and dimension of electrode, kinds of voltages and pressure. Moreover, the breakdown voltage of cryogenic nitrogen gas and flashover voltage of GFRP in the cryogenic nitrogen gas is also influenced by temperature and vapour-mist density of the gas.

  • Environmental regulations are being strengthened worldwide to solve global warming. For this reason, interest in eco-friendly gas fuels such as LNG and hydrogen is continuously increasing. However, when adopting eco-friendly gas fuel, liquefying at a cryogenic temperature is essential to ensure economic feasibility in storage and transportation. Although austenitic stainless steel is typically applied to store cryogenic liquefied gas, structural steel can experience sudden heat shrinkage in the case of leakage in the loading and unloading process of LNG. In severe cases, the phase of the steel may change, so care is required. This study conducted Charpy impact tests on steel material in nine different temperature ranges, from room to cryogenic temperatures, to analyze the effects of cryogenic liquefied gas leaks. As a result of the study, it was not easy to find variations in ductile to brittle transition temperature (DBTT) due to the leakage of cryogenic liquefied gas. Still, the overall impact toughness tended to decrease, and these results were verified through fracture surface analysis. In summary, brittle fracture of the steel plate may occur when a secondary load is applied to steel for hull structural use exposed to a cryogenic environment of -40 ℃ or lower. Therefore, it needs to be considered in the ship design and operating conditions.

  • In this study, we analyze computational simulation of cryogenic distillation process to separate $^{13}CH_4$ and $^{12}CH_4$ from LNG by using the cryogenic energy. Used computational simulation program is made Smoker's equation and FUG(Fenske-Underwood-Gilliland)'s method by short-cut method. Generally speaking, the technology of carbon isotope separation is studied by many methods, especially the separation by cryogenic distillation process is commercialized because of many merits.

  • Recently, reciprocating cryogenic pumps are mainly developed for small-and-mid sized fuel supply systems. Centrifugal type pumps are not actively developed. Most cryogenic submerged pumps are imported. For transportation, cryogenic liquefied natural gas requires the liquid pump technology that can works in extreme evironments. In order to transport liquefied natural gas, it is necessary to apply pump technology. This is the fundamental research for developing the submerged pump technology applicable to the transportation and storage system equipment of cryogenic liquefied system. It tries to secure basic design materials through reverse-engineering in the cryogenic submerged pump development. Regarding materials, STS-304 and STS-431 which are stainless materials widely used in the cryogenic area are applied. Aluminum alloy is applied to impeller and upper manifolder and the pump rotates at the high speed of 6,000rpm.

  • This paper compares the performance of JP-8(Jet Propellant) fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas in the F110 GE100 jet engine. The cost of natural gas usage in gas turbine engines is lower than JP-8 and LPG. LPG cost is more than JP-8. LPG volume is bigger than JP-8 in the same flight conditions. Fuel tank should be cryogenic for using natural gas in the aircraft. Cost and weight of the cryogenic tanks are bigger. Cryogenic tanks decrease the move capability of the aircraft. The use of jet propellant (JP) is the best in available application for F110 GE 100 jet engine.

  • The pressurization system in a liquid rocket propulsion system provides a controlled gas pressure in the ullage space of the vehicle propellant tanks. It is advantage to employ a hot gas heat exchanger in the pressurization system to increase the specific volume of the pressurant and thereby reduce over-all system weight. A significant improvement in pressurization-system performance can be achieved, particularly in a cryogenic system, where the gas supply is stored inside the cryogenic propellant tank. In this study liquid nitrogen was used instead of liquid oxygen as a simulant. The temperature characteristic of cryogenic pressurant is very important to develop some components in pressurization system. Numerical modeling and test data were studied using SINDA/FLUINT Program and PTF(Propellant-feeding Test facility).

  • Inhibition of propellant temperature rising in liquid propulsion rocket using cryogenic fluid as a propellant is very important. Especially propellant temperature rising during stand-by after filling and pre-pressurization can bring into cavitation in turbo-pump. One of the method preventing propellant temperature rising in cryogenic feeding system is recirculating propellant through the loop composed of propellant tank, feed pipe, and recirculation pipe. The circulation of propellant is promoted through gas-lift effect by gas injection to lower position of recirculation pipe. In this experiment liquid oxygen and gas helium is used as propellant and injection gas. Under atmospheric and pressurized tank ullage condition, helium injection flow-rate is varied to observe the variation of recirculating flow-rate and propellant temperature in the feed pipe. There is appropriate helium injection flow-rate for gas-lift recirculation system.

  • The sizes of cryogenic vessels and storage tanks are becoming bigger due to strong demands from semiconductor and LCD industry as well as high-tech electronic industry. Conventional level and pressure gauges used for cryogenic vessels were analog types which made exact measurement difficult for the remained quantity at lower levels due to their poor accuracy. In this study, a design for a digital type gas level gauge which can measure the pressure and level inside of the cryogenic liquefied gas storage tanks has been proposed by using a differential pressure sensor, in which the measured data are monitored by a host PC and are transferred to a mobile printer for data confirmation at local station.
