This paper presents the semi-analytical ice load calculation methods that are useful to simulate the ice-breaking process. Since the semi-analytical methods rely on the previously developed closed form equations or numerical analysis results, the user's exact understanding for the equations must be supported in order to use the methods properly. In this study, various failure modes of ice such as local crushing, in-plane splitting failure, out-of-plane bending failure and radial or circumferential cracking with rotation of the broken ice floe are considered. Based on the presented methods, the fracture modes were evaluated according to the size and thickness of ice. In addition, time series analysis for the ice-breaking process was performed on several ice conditions and the results were analyzed.

The objective of this study is to find out the shear capacity of URM wall and the variables that affect the shear capacity of URM wall such as the opening and the aspect ratio, considering four kinds of failure modes, sliding shear failure, toe crushing failure, and diagonal shear failure. The main varialble is the shape of opening of URM walls. First URM has one door, second has one window, third hase one door and one window, the last has two windows. The test results of URM with openings show that the specimens are governed by rocking failure mode.

Aluminum member absorbs energy by stable plastic deformation under axial loading. While CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) member absorbs energy by unstable brittle failure but its specific strength and stiffness is higher than those of aluminum member. In this study, for complement of detects and synergy effect by combination with the advantages of each member, the axial collapse tests were performed for aluminum CFRP members which are composed of aluminum members wrapped with CFRP outside aluminum circular members. Based on the respective collapse characteristics of aluminum and CFRP members, crushing behavior and energy absorption characteristics were analyzed for aluminum CRRP members which have different CFRP fiber orientation angle and thickness Test results showed that aluminum CFRP members supplemented the unstable brittle failure of CFRP members due to ductile nature of inner aluminum members. It turned out that the CFRP fiber orientation angle and thickness influence energy absorption capability together with the collapse mode of the members.

The concrete corbels consist of various failure mechanisms such as the yielding of the tension reinforcement, the crushing or splitting from compression concrete struts, and localized bearing or shearing failure under the loading plate. However, predicting those failure mechanisms is very difficult. In this study, the ACI 318-02, the softened strut-tie model approach, and the nonlinear strut-tie model approach are applied to ultimate strength analysis of normal strength concrete corbels tested to failure. From the result of the analysis, an effective analysis and design method of normal strength concrete corbels is suggested.
The present paper deals with the seismic response analysis and the evaluation of most likely failure modes for a water storage structure. For the stress analysis, a 3-D mathematical model has been adopted to represent the structure appropriately. The structure has been analyzed for both static and seismic loads. Seismic analysis has been carried out considering the hydrodynamic effects of the contained water. Based on the stress analyses results, the most likely failure modes viz. tensile cracking and compressive crushing of concrete for the various structural elements; caused by the seismic event have been investigated. Further an attempt has also been made to quantify the initial leakage rate and average emptying time for the structure during seismic event after evaluating the various crack parameters viz. crack-width and crack-spacing at the locations of interest. The results are presented with reference to peak ground acceleration (PGA) of the seismic event. It has been observed that, an increase in PGA would result in significant increase in stresses and crack width in the various structural members. Significant increase in initial leakage rate and decrease in average emptying time for the structure has also been observed with the increase in PGA.
Regrading the development of offshore natural gas field near Sakhalin Island which is an ice-infested area, this study aims to estimate the dynamic ice load for construction of offshore structures operating in this region. In this paper the design ice load and dynamic responses of a slender Arctic structure upon continuous ice movement are sutdied. Crushing agter a certain elastic deformation is assumed as a primary failure mechanism at the contact zone between semi-infinite level ice edge and the face of structure. Dynamic interaction forces are calculated using a modified Korzhavin's equation and a two-dimensional ice-structure interaction model is adopted. To verify the numerical model, dynamic analysis is performed for on of the Baltic Sea channel markers whose response patterns were presiously observed.

Sea ice is the main factor affecting the safety of the Arctic engineering. However, traditional numerical methods derived from classical continuum mechanics have difficulties in resolving discontinuous problems like ice damage. In this paper, a non-local, meshfree numerical method called "peridynamics", which is based on integral form, was applied to simulate the interaction between level ice and a cylindrical, vertical, rigid structure at different velocities. Ice in the simulation was freshwater ice and simplified as elastic-brittle material with a linear elastic constitutive model and critical equivalent strain criterion for material failure in state-based peridynamics. The ice forces obtained from peridynamic simulation are in the same order as experimental data. Numerical visualization shows advantages of applying peridynamics on ice damage. To study the repetitive nature of ice force, damage zone lengths of crushing failure were computed and conclude that damage zone lengths are 0.15-0.2 times as ice thickness.

Factors influencing shear behavior of granular material include particle size, shape, distribution, relative density, particle crushing, etc. In this study, these factors are characterized by viewpoint of shear behavior using numerical analysis based on DEM. Geometrical particle shape is represented by a combination of small circular particles and influence of particle shape on crushing is studied through relative comparisons between clump (uncrushable) and cluster (crushable) models which are modeled using DEM. Also, particle shape is quantified by the dimensionless parameters such as circularity and convexity. The results indicate that particle shape indexes have a negative association with internal friction angle. Also, internal friction angle becomes reduced and failure envelop curve becomes nonlinear due to the particle crushing. It is also found that numerical results are quite good agreement with the experimental test conducted in this study.

To avoid debonding failure, a novel type of hybrid anchorage (HA) is proposed in this study that uses a slotted plate to lock the ends of the fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheet in addition to the usual bonding over the substrate of the strengthened member. An experimental investigation was performed on three groups of RC beams, which differed from one another in either concrete strength or steel reinforcement ratio. The test results indicate that the end self-locking of the CFRP sheet can improve the failure ductility, ultimate capacity of the beams and its utilization ratio. Although intermediate debonding occurred in all the strengthened beams, it was not a fatal mode of failure for the three specimens with end anchorage. Among them, FRP rupture occurred in the beam with higher concrete strength and lower steel reinforcement ratio, whereas the other two failed by concrete crushing. The beam strengthened by HA obtained a relatively high percentage of increase in ultimate capacity when the rebar ratio or concrete strength decreased. The expressions in the literature were inspected to calculate the critical loads at intermediate debonding, FRP rupturing and concrete crushing after debonding for the strengthened beam. Then, the necessity of further research is addressed.

An existing plasticity model using multiple failure criteria is modified to describe the behavior of reinforced concrete planar members under cyclic load. Multiple failure criteria are used to define both isotropic damage of compressive crushing and anisotropic damage of tensile cracking. A numerical method is developed to define multi-directional and non-orthogonal crack directions. The material model is implemented in the finite element analysis and verified by comparison with existing experiments of reinforced concrete shear wall.
