In order to investigate recycling possibility as a construction material of oyster-shells, the geotechnical characteristics including permeability, confined compression and shear strength of crushed oyster shell were quantitatively examined in terms of fineness modulus and relative density of crushed oyster-shell. Experimental results show that the crushed oyster-shells are lighter than sand in weight, and have similar characteristics on permeability and shear strength to sandy soils. The oyster-shell can be considered as highly crushable material but not much crushable with existing high loads. Based on the laboratory test results, it is highly fudged that the crushed oyster-shell can be a substitute of sand as SCP materials.

More strict construction control of railway roadbeds is demanded in high speed railway system because of heavier repeated dynamic loading than conventional railways. The aim of this study is to propose a compaction control methodology of crushed-rock-soil-fills including as large particles as $200\sim300mm$ in diameter, which are easily encountered in high speed railway roadbed. Field tensity evaluation and in turn compaction control of such crushed-rock-soil-fills are almost impossible by conventional methods such as in-situ density measurements or plate loading tests. The proposed method consists of shear wave measurements of compaction specimens in laboratory and in-situ measurements of fills. In other words, compaction control can be carried out by comparing laboratory and field shear wave velocities using as a compaction control parameter. The proposed method was implemented at a soil site in the beginning and will be expanded to crushed-rock-soil-fills in future. One interesting result is that similar relationship of shear wave velocity and water content was obtained as that of density and water content with the maximum value at the optimum moisture content.

Among soft ground treatment methods with granular soil used in domestic, the sand compaction pile method has been utilized greatly, but, as a result of exhaustion of sand and increase of unit cost, a necessity of an alternative method is suggested. In this study, the static load tests for group crushed-stone compaction piles which were constructed at in-situ site were performed. Pile diameter was 700mm and area of loading plates were changed. The static load tests of single and group piles were performed for area replacement ratio of 20, 30 and 40%. Based on test results, bearing capacity of group crushed-stone compaction pile were estimated. The more both single pile and group pile increase, the more yield bearing capacity tended to increase. Also, the yield bearing capacity of a group pile is about 50% less than the yield bearing capacity of a single pile. If the ground reinforced with the crushed-stone compaction pile is replacement ratio of $20{\sim}40%$, RIYB of both single pile and group pile increases qualitative tendency of linear more than original ground

The use of oyster shells is proposed as a substitute construction material for geotechnical applications. To investigate recycling possibility as a substitute of sand compaction pile (SCP) for oyster shells, the geotechnical characteristics including permeability and shear strength of crushed oyster shell, sand and crushed oyster shell-sand mixted soil. Experimental results show that the crushed oyster shells are lighter than sand in weight, and have similar characteristics on permeability to sand. The results of direct shear test show that the measured value of friction angle ${\Phi}$ of crushed oyster shell was lager than that of sand. It would be expected that more angular particles (crushed oyster shells) would interlock more thoroughly than rounded particles (send).

Prototype crushed-stone compaction pile(${\Phi}=700mm$) were constructed on specific test site. Static loading tests for crushed-stone compaction piles were performed. Based on the static loading test results, finite element analysis was performed using software PENTAGON 3D. Numerical analysis were done for the area replacement ratio($a_s$) of $20{\sim}70%$ and $a_s$ was varied as a step of 10%. In the single crushed-stone compaction pile, settlement was decreased as $a_s$ was increased. In the group pile, this tendency was similar. In the in-sit test and numerical analysis, as $a_s$ increased, the stress concentration ratio was increased. But $a_s$ in the numerical analysis were more than that of in-situ test, greatly.
In this study, laboratory model test carried out to present the suitable range of particle size distribution and clogging behavior of recycled aggregates and crushed stone as horizontal drains in soft ground. The recycled aggregates and crushed stone showed clogging phenomenon because the top fill material and bottom clay inflow into the horizontal drains. The pp mat was the most effective method to minimize clogging phenomenon. The horizontal coefficient of permeability in case of installing the pp mat showed largely 2.1 times more than the case of not installing. When the pp mat is not installing, the thickness of fine grained soil inflow into the horizontal drains showed 6.7~13.3% range in top fill material and 3.3~6.7% range in bottom clay. Overall, the reduction of the discharge capacity by fine grained soil inflow showed small in recycled aggregates and crushed stone. Also, the appropriate criterion range of particle size distribution is presented to make use of a horizontal drains in soft ground on the basis of laboratory test.

This paper is interested in the incorporation of crushed sand and desert sand in the composition the self compacting concretes (SCC). Desert dune sand, which has a fine extra granulometry, and the crushed sand, which contains an important content of fines, can constitute interesting components for SCC. Part II consists in studying the behaviour of SCC containing various sands with different origins. These sands, with different sizes, consist of several combinations of rolled sand (RS), crushed sand (CS) and desert sand (DS). The study examines the influence of the granular combination of sands on the characteristics in the fresh and the hardened state of SCC. The results of the experimental tests showed an improvement of the workability of the fresh SCC by combining sands of varied granulometry. The addition of the DS to CS or to RS allowed the increase of the mixture viscosity but decreased the mechanical strengths. Furthermore, the CS-RS combinations increased the compressive and the tensile strengths of the studied SCC. The optimized formulations of sands gave the highest performances of the SCC.

The relative density of soil indicate loose and dense state of sand. Because sand is low compressibility, initial relative density of sand is important effect factor of compression and shear behavior. To measure exactly relative density, the exactly maximum and minimum void ratio was determinated by laboratory tests. Generally, vibrating table method is adapted for minimum void ratio(KS F 2345). However KS F 2345 is not consider the particle break during the vibrating table test. In this study, The minimum void ratio is compared with a method of Pluviation and Vibrating table test results using the K-7(crushed sand). It is concluded that the K-7 sand particles were crushed during the vibrating table test and vibrating table test is not a suitable test for a crushed sand $e_{min}$.
In this study, freezing-thawing resistance of concrete using steel slag as coarse aggregate(steel slag concrete) from Gwangyang Iron Co. was estimated to offer basic data for utilization of much more steel slag. Freezing-thawing test of concrete using crushed stone as coarse aggregate(crushed stone concrete) whose compressive strength and air contents are as close as possible to those of the steel slag concrete was performed. Because they are main two factors that affect of freezing-thawing resistance. The test was carried out up to 400 cycles according to KS F 2456. The compressive strength and weight of two concretes were measured and compared. As a result, the freezing-thawing resistance of steel slag concrete curing in water was almost the same with that of crushed stone concrete. But the resistance of steel slag concrete curing in air dry condition was weaker than that of crushed stone concrete. Also, the steel slag concrete which has more than 60% of W/C ratio showed much more surface degradation when compared to crushed stone concrete.

In the country, due to short comings of natural aggregates of good quality, it is common to use crushed stones. However, the investigation has not been done on the chemical reaction of crushed stones. This study tested and analyzed the aggregate chemical reaction by petrographic examination(ASTM C 295) for the test aggregates which had been tested by chemical method(ASTM C 289) in the first year. As a result, most of test aggregates didn't show any reaction but many have common deleterious mineral. Therefore, there exists the possibility of chemical reaction in petrogrphic point of view
