Earthworm harvesting efficiency of earthworm(Eisenia fetida) attracting trap in the vermicomposting bed (지렁이 사육상에서 지렁이 유인장치에 의한 줄지렁이(Eisenia fetida) 유인효과)

  • Population dynamics in the vermicomposting bed was investigated. And harvesting efficiencies of earthworm attracting traps with different attractants, mesh sizes of net and covering materials was evaluated. Peak density of earthworm population was $5kg/m^2$ and therafter its desity kept $4.4{\sim}5.0kg/m^2$. It was evaluated that suitable mesh size of the net was 7mm and proper covering materials of the earthworm attracting trap was cotton quilt. The earthworm harvesting efficiency of trap with attractant was much higher than that of trap without attractant. With more amount of attractant in the trap and with longer setting period of trap onto the vermicomposting bed, the earthworm attracting trap harvested more earthworms. Crushed pear-peel attracted much more earthworms than paper mill sludge, but it was difficult to supply enough amount of crushed pear-peel for practical need. Sugar solution(10%) with tab water was proven to be an alternative to crushed pear-peel because its attracting effect on earthworm was as high as crushed pear-peel and it was easy to prepare and supply in large quantity.

Effects of Low Power Laser Irradiation on the Spinal Cord for the Functional Regeneration of Crushed Sciatic Nerve in Rats (흰쥐 좌골신경 압좌손상 후 척수분절의 저강도 레이저 조사가 운동기능 회복에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of the present study was to examine the functional recovery of the crushed sciatic nerve of rats after low-power laser irradiation applied to the corresponding segments of the spinal cord. After a crushed injury on the left sciatic nerve in rats. low-power laser irradiation was applied transcutaneously to corresponding segments of the spinal cord immediately after suture the wound by using 2000 mW, 2000Hz, 830 nm CaAIAs(Gallium-aluminum-arsenide) semiconductor diode laser. The laser treatment was performed with 10 minutes daily for 4 successive weeks. Functional recovery was evaluated per weekly following injury by sciatic function index(SFI),using data obtained by walking track analysis. For four weeks after crush injury, experimental group had significantly greater functional improvement than control group(${\alpha}$=0.05). In a experimental group, SFI was significantly increased for three weeks, but control group not increased for two weeks. This study suggests that low-power laser irradiation applied directly to the spinal cord can improve functional recovery of the crushed sciatic nerve in rats.

Channels Packed with Porous Media to Improve Water Quality for Irrigation Reservoirs (관개용 저수지 수질개선을 위한 접촉산화수로)

  • A stream purification system was applied to the upper reaches of the Masan Reservoir to improve the water quality. This system consisted of two channels which were constructed on both sides of the stream, one side packed with crushed gravels and the other with plastic filter media. The system operated under low pollutant concentrations and high hydraulic loadings during a dry season to avoid clogging of the filter media. Removal rate and efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the channel packed with crushed gravel were $14.8g/m^3/d$ and 11.5%, and for the channel with plastic filter media, $50.1g/m^3/d$ and 13.5%, respectively. Removal efficiencies of total phosphorus (T-P) were 6.6% (gravel) and 10.0% (plastic media). These results indicated plastic filter media having relatively high specific surface areas were more efficient than crushed gravels in removing pollutants. However, due to low influent water quality during dry season, the removal efficiencies were low. The proportion of nitrate nitrogen to total nitrogen (T-N) of the inflow was high but, as the system operated under aerobic condition, nitrate nitrogen could not denitrified. Accordingly, total nitrogen was not attenuated with this system. To improve the reservoir water quality effectively, this system should be able to treat the storm runoff containing higher pollutant loadings. When the filter materials are clogged by the storm runoff instead of backwashing, it would be more efficient to replace them, Therefore, the use of natural materials which are light, easily obtaining and replaceable, and have high specific surface areas is recommended.

  • Peripheral nerve injuries are a commonly encountered clinical problem and often result in a chronic pain and severe functional deficits. The expression of c-Fos is sometimes used as a marker of increased neuronal activity. We have prepared the aqueous extract of amygdalin from Armeniacae semen for pain control. In the present study, we investigated the effects of amygdalin on the recovery rate of the locomotor function and on the expression of c-Fos in the ventrolateral periaqueductal gray (vlPAG) region following sciatic crushed nerve injury in rats. Walking track analysis for the evaluation of functional recovery and immunohistochemistry for the c-Fos expression were used in this study. In the present results, characteristic gait change with dropping of the sciatic function index (SFI) was observed and c-Fos expression in the vlPAG was suppressed following sciatic crushed nerve injury in rats. Amygdalin enhanced SFI value and restored c-Fos expression in the vlPAG to the control value. The present our study indicated that amygdalin activates neurons in the vlPAG, and it facilitates functional recovery following peripheral nerve injury.

Evaluation of Interface Friction Properties between Coarse Grained Materials and Geosynthetics (조립재료와 지오신세틱스의 접촉면 마찰특성 평가)

  • The purpose of the study was to evaluate how much gastropod shell effected its properties better than crushed stone as coarse grained materials by comparing friction properties of a contact surface between coarse grained materials and geosynthetics with the large-scale direct shear test. To achieve the purpose, the study compared and analyzed friction coefficient and friction angle by making crushed stone or gastropod shell into model ground and by installing and shearing non-woven fabric or geostrip geosynthetics. As the results of the analysis, crushed stone had the internal friction angle of $33.8^{\circ}$ when its unit weight was $13.7kN/m^3$ and gastropod shell had the internal friction angle of $35.4^{\circ}$ when its unit weight was $5.4kN/m^3$. Also, the friction angle of a contact surface between geosynthetics and crushed stone was larger than the friction angle of a contact surface between geosynthetics and gastropod shell.

  • Bottom ash and fly ash are by-product from thermoelectric power plants. Fly ash is recycled to various field. However, though an output of bottom ash have increased each year, most of them is reclaimed in ash landfill. It is necessary to find a solution that bottom ash is recycled economically and know characteristics of bottom ash to recycle. It is goal to investigate engineering properties of bottom ash, especially the particle breakage, to recycle that. Bottom ash was crushed by impact method according to compaction energy and then compared with or original sample and crushed it in terms of particle size distribution and characteristics of strength. In result, after crushed it, particle finer was increased, especially 2~0.85 mm size, than original. It was displayed a tendency that internal friction of crushed sample was decreased but cohesion of it was not. Therefore, it is important to investigate the engineering properties of bottom ash in terms of the particle breakage to use construction materials for various field.

An Experimental Verification on the Efficiency of Geosynthetics on Crushed Stone Layer (쇄석배수층에 적용된 토목섬유의 효율성에 대한 실험적 검증)

  • This study is to prove the efficiency of geo-synthetics on the crushed stone layer by experiments. The strength of PET mat as reinforcing soft ground was verified through the loading experiments. Also, PP mat was used to protect the blockage of crushed stone layer by the filled soil, whose efficiency was examined according to loading and infiltration conditions. The crushed stones were penetrated into clay layer if the PET mat was removed, which was verified by loading experiments. In addition, the cohesioness of soil without PP mat made the blockage of stone layer easily, which reduced the infiltration capacity by about 98%.

  • A prediction model of resilient modulus($E_R$) was developed for recycled crushed-rock-soil mixtures. The evaluation of $E_R$, using the "orthodox" repeated loading tri-axial test, is not feasible for such a large-size gravelly material. An alternative method was proposed hereby using the subtle different modulus called nonlinear dynamic modulus. The prediction model was developed by utilizing in-situ measured shear modulus($G_{max}$) and its reduction curves of modeled materials using the large free-free resonant column test. A pilot evaluation of the model parameters was carried out for recycled crushed-rock-soil-mixture at a highway construction site near Gimcheon, Korea. The values of the model parameters($A_E,\;n_E,\;{\varepsilon}_r\;and\;{\alpha}$) were proposed as 9618, 0.47, 0.0135, and 0.8, respectively.

Occupational Exposure to Airborne Asbestos Fibers in Serpentine Quarries and a Steel Mill (사문석 채석장과 제철소 내 사문석 취급 근로자의 공기 중 석면 노출 평가)

  • Objectives: Asbestos contents of crushed serpentine rocks and airborne fiber concentrations of workers were determined at two serpentine quarries and a steel mill. Methods: Bulk samples of uncrushed and crushed serpentine rocks were collected and analyzed by PLM and TEM. Airborne asbestos samples were collected from the breathing zone of workers and the vicinity of working area and analyzed by PCM and TEM. Results: Chrysotile was identified with antigorite, lizardite and non-asbestiform actinolite in bulk samples. The arithmetic means of chrysotile contents in crushed serpentines were 0.11, 0.01, 0.42%(W/W) by quarry A, quarry B and a steel mill, respectively. The asbestos concentrations of all personal samples were less than 0.1 f/cc which is the permissible exposure limit of workers in Korea. The arithmetic means of airborne asbestos concentrations were 0.017 f/cc and 0.009 f/cc in personal samples collected from two serpentine quarries. The asbestos concentrations of all personal samples collected from a steel mill were less than LODs by PCM analysis but asbestos was detected in area samples by TEM. By the job tasks of serpentine quarries, crusher/separator operation generated the highest exposure to airborne asbestos. Conclusions: Although chrysotile contents in crushed serpentines of quarries were less the permissible level, the highest exposure of workers in serpentine quarries reached up to 76% of the permissible level of airborne asbestos. There were also possibilities of occupational exposure to airborne asbestos in a steel mill. The present exposure study should encourage further survey and occupational control of quarries producing serpentine or other types of asbestos-bearing rocks.

  • Coulomb's theory has traditionally been used for the estimation of active earth pressure acting on rigid walls. However, many experimental data show that active earth pressures on rough, rigid walls are nonlinearly distributed. This is due to the arching effects produced by friction between the wall and backfill materials when the wall translates away from the backfill. Although there are analyses that take arching into consideration f3r a horizontal backfill surface and a vertical rigid wall, these analyses were derived for homogeneous backfill. Therefore, it is not possible to use these analyses for a caisson backfilled with crushed rock and sand, a common type of rigid wall for harbor structures. In this study, a new formulation for calculation of the nonlinear active earth pressure acting on a caisson backfilled with crushed rock and sand is proposed considering both internal friction angles and unit weights of the crushed rock and sand.
