  • This paper investigates the energy absorption characteristics of thin-walled rectangular tubes. In the compact mode, the crushing process of a thin-walled tube is analyzed into 3 parts by the ratio of outward to inward fold length. The mean crush load and the half-wave folding length are determined by using minimum energy principle. The effective crush distance can be determined when half-wave folding length is known, and the number of folds is derived when crush distance is given. Thus when the crush distance is given, energy absorption capacity can be estimated with mean crush load and number of folds. And the theoretical value is proven experimentally.

The overall deformations and lo buckling modes of tube was discussed by "plastic hinge concep Force-displacement function was plotted to show various state that depended or time. Also, mean crush load was expressed as a type of section geometry a material property using dimensional analysis. To verify the energy absorption and the effects of dimensions, The standards Wt used as related density and specific energy, mean crushing load and the resL were discussed by the relation between crush load and deformation, the relati between related density and specific energy, the relation between crush load a mean crush load, the relation between mean crush load and specific energy.ergy.

  • Understanding the crushing behaviour of aluminum honeycombs under dynamic loading is useful for crash simulations of vehicles and for design of impacting energy absorbers. In the study of honeycomb crushing under quasi-static, dynamic loading, the most important parameter is crush strength. Crush strength is indicated to energy absorption characteristic of aluminum honeycomb. In this study, Using Finite Element Analysis carried out crush strength of hexagonal aluminum honeycomb then the results was compared with Quasi-static test. Consequently, Crush strength is different in quasi-static loading and dynamic loading about 16%.

  • It is expected that the size of welding defect affects the mechanical performance of welded medium density polyethylene (MDPE) pipe joints. In this study, butt fusion welded MDPE pipe joints with a single spherical or planar defect of various sizes were studied using experimental crush testing and also by finite element method. The crush test showed that the mechanical performance of crush was not affected by the size and geometry of a single welding defect when the defect size was increased to 45% of the pipe's wall thickness. The simulation results indicated that the effect of the single welding defect on the Von Mises stress distribution near the defect explained the reason of the test results.

  • For the axial crushing tests of various shape of tubes, it was reported that composite tubes need trigger mechanism to avoid brittle failure. In this study, static axial crush tests were performed with the new aluminum/GFRP hybrid tubes. Glass/Epoxy prepregs were wrapped around aluminum tube and co-cured. The failure of hybrid tube was stable and progressive without trigger mechanism, and specific energy absorption was increased to maximum 34% in comparison with aluminum tube. Effective energy absorption is possible for inner aluminum tube because wrapped composite tube constrain the deflection of aluminum tube and reduce the folding length. The failure of hybrid composite tube was stable without trigger mechanism because inner aluminum tube could play the role of crack initiator and controller. Aluminum/Glass-Epoxy hybrid tube is suitable for the vehicle front structure due to effective energy absorption capability, easy production, and simple application for RTM process.

  • In accidents involving the collision of railway vehicles, there is a risk that structural members might penetrate the cab frame of the railway vehicle in the space in which the driver or passengers are seated. To reduce this risk, worldwide, studies on the collision of railway vehicles are underway. In North America, the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) was revised in 2010 to include crush criteria for a collision and the corner post in an end frame. In this study, a crush analysis and crush test for a collision post and a crash analysis for a rigid cylinder were performed according to the CFR. The analysis and test results were compared and reviewed. This study aims to determine the usefulness of crush analysis for developing various end frames, and to understand the crush and crash characteristics and review the accuracy of the analysis.

The failure of the hybrid tube was stable and progressive without trigger mechanism, and specific energy absorption was increased to the maximum of 33% in comparison with the aluminum tube. Effective energy absorption is possible for an inner aluminum tube because a wrapped composite tube constrains the deflection of an aluminum tube. The failure of a hybrid composite tube was stable without trigger mechanism because the inner aluminum tube could play the role of the crack initiator and controller. Mean crushing load could be calculated by modifying the plastic hinge collapse model for hybrid materials. The predicted results by this analytical model showed good agreement with the experimental results. It can be said that Aluminum/Glass-Epoxy hybrid tube is suitable for the vehicle front structure because this hybrid tube shows effective energy absorption, easy production, and simple application capability for RTM process.

  • This paper describes the beneficial effect of weldment imperfection of the cask impact limiter, by applying intermittent-weld, for impact energy absorbing behavior. From the point of view of energy absorbing efficiency of an energy absorber, it is desirable to reduce the crush load resistance and increase the deformation of the energy absorber within certain limit. This paper presents the test results of intermittent-weldment and the analysis results of cask impacts and the discussions of the improvement of impact mitigating effect by the imperfect-weldment. The rupture of imperfect weldment of an impact limiter improves the energy-absorbing efficiency by reducing the crush load amplitude without loss of total energy absorption. The beneficial effect of weldment imperfection should be considered to the cask impact limiter design.

  • A spacer grid assembly is one of the most important structural components in a Light Water Reactor(LWR) nuclear fuel assembly. In the case of the Zircaloy spacer grid assembly, the primary design consideration is to ensure that lateral dynamic crush strength of the spacer grid assembly is sufficient to resist design basis loads and thereby prevent seismic accidents, without a significant increase in the hydraulic head loss for the reactor coolant in the reactor core. In this study, factors affecting the lateral dynamic crush strength of a spacer grid assembly were analyzed by performing lateral dynamic crush tests and finite element analyses. Further, an effective and economical method to enhance the lateral dynamic crush strength of the spacer grid assembly is proposed.
