Quantitative determination of sulforaphane, S-methylsulfinylbutyl isothiocyanate in 20 cruciferous vegetables of Korean origin was performed. Homogenate of vegetable was extracted with dichloromethane, and the extract, after drying, was subjected to GC/MS analysis, which was based on single ion monitoring (SIM) at m/z 72, 160, 55, 114 and 177. The content of sulforaphane was found to be the highest in the extract of broccoli $(80.2{\sim}617.7\;ppm)$ followed by turnip $(15.4{\sim}23.1\;ppm)$, red cabbage $(9.9{\sim}32.1\;ppm),\;radish\;(5.5{\sim}8.8\;ppm)$ and kale (8 ppm). Among various cultivars of broccoli, broccoli '1243' and broccoli 'Pilgrim' showed higher content of sulforaphane than others. Especially, in the stem of broccoli '1243' and the floret of broccoli 'Pilgrim' the amount of sulforaphane was the highest (>700 ppm). Thus, the content of sulforaphane differed according to the cultivars and the portion of the vegetables.

The released amount of thiocyanate ion in Cruciferous vegetables treated by wet heat, increased as the reaction time goes by and was maximum value after treatment for 30min, but it was not changed by dry heat treatment. When samples were autolyzed by myrosinase, the amount of thiocyanate ion increased gradually as time goes by, was maximum value after 3hrs and much higher than those in the sample treated by wet. The released amount of thiocyanate ion in each sample showed much in cabbage, Chinese cabbage, radish, kale and mustard in the order. The generated amount of indoleacetonitrile by heat treatment increased as time goes by and the generated amount in each sample determined was high in the order of cabbage, Chinese cabbage and radish.
Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) is an infectious viral pathogen on the cruciferous crops, predominantly Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris subsp. pekinensis) and radish (Raphanus sativus). On the basis of the symptom development in selective differential hosts from indicator host species, Chinese cabbage and Korean radish inbred lines, the representative eight isolates of TuMV were divided into two major groups/or six types. Group I includes Th 1, Ca-ad7, and Cj-ca2-1 isolates, while group II includes the other isolates (rg-pfl, r 9-10, Rhcql-2, Stock and Mustard). According to the molecular phylogenetic analysis, these isolates, however, divided into two groups and two independent isolates. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that four isolates (Tu 1, r9-10, Stock and Rh-cql-2) formed a distinct phylogenetic group, and the other two isolates (Ca-ad7 and Cj-ca2-1) also formed another group. Mustard and rg-pfl isolates did not seem to have any relationship with these two groups. Taken together, these results indicated that virulence differentiation on host plants, molecular phylogenetic analysis of the nucleotide and the deduced amino acid of TuMV coat proteins did not show any relationship. The multi-resistant lines, Wonyae 20026 and BP058 in Chinese cabbage represent valuable genetic materials that can be used for crucifer breeding programs on TuMV resistance, but not in Korean radish.
Sixty one commercial seed samples of three cruciferous vegetable crops were examined for seed-borne Alternaria spp. by deep freezing blotter method. Alternaria raphani, A. brassicicola and A. brassicae were detected from 7, 6 and 1 seed samples of chinese cabbage out of 20 with average infection ratio of 3.8, 1.8 and 0.5, respectively. A. raphani and A. brassicae were detected from 11 and 2 seed samples of radish out of 38 with average infection ratio of 7.2 and 1.0, respectively. A. brassicicola was detected from 3 samples of cabbage seed with average infection ratio of 21.8. Most of the Alternaria spp. detected were recovered from the seed coat and caused seed rot and seedling infections. A. brassicicola was recovered from the embryos of radish, chinese cabbage and cabbage in low infections and A. raphani was recovered from the embryos of radish. In inoculation experiments, A. brassicicola, A. brassicae and A. raphani produced black leaf spots on old leaves of three creciferous vegetable crops and the spots gradually increased in size appearing gray to light brown lesions which later coalesce and caused defoliation.
As part of developing natural food preservatives, the antimicrobial effect of ethanol and water extracts from the Cruciferous vegetable was examined Korean traditional Brassica juncea Coss. was used widely as an ingredient of Kimchi, a natural flavoring and spice for a long time. Antimicrobial activities were examined against 15 microorganisms which were food-born pathogens and/or food poisioning microorganisms and food-related bacteria and yeasts. Ethanol extract from leaf mustard showed an antimicrobial effect in most of the strains used in the present study. The lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) were seen in Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus natto at 10 mg/ml. MIC of water extract was 40-60 mg/ml for bacteria and yeast. Antimicrobial activity of the ethanol extract was not disappeared by the heating at $121^{\circ}C$ for 15 min and not affected by pH.
We investigated whether socioeconomic differences affect fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption with respect to total intake and intake of various FV subgroups. Our study included 6667 adults aged 40-64 years who completed a dietary survey in the fourth Korean NHANES (2007-2009). FV intake was estimated from 24-hour recalls and food frequency questionnaires. Differences in FV consumption related to educational attainment were analyzed according to different nutritional categories of FV. Both men and women in the low-education group had the lowest intake of total FV and total fruits, and women also had the lowest intake of total vegetables. Also lowest in this group was consumption of mushrooms and vegetables (excluding kimchi) among men, and cruciferous and allium vegetables (excluding Chinese cabbage and radish) among women, while kimchi consumption was the highest in this group. Additionally, an association between educational level and intake of citrus fruits was evident among men. Adults in the low-education group consumed less carotene-rich FV, red fruit and/or vegetables, and dark-green leafy vegetables, fewer total vegetable dishes, and fewer types of fruit than in other groups. Men in this group had the lowest intake of yellow/orange fruit and/or vegetables, and women consumed the least folate-rich FV. There is a clear association between educational attainment and FV intake with regard to total intake, and to specific nutrients, bioactive compounds, colors, and variety.

Glucosinolates, containing indole glucosinates in Chinese cabbage, cabbage, radish and kale were analyzed as 6, 5, 5 and 2 types of glucosinolates, respectively, Four types of glucosinolates from mustard was identified, but indole glucosinolates were not detectable. In Chinese cabbage, the content of glucosinolates showed higher amount in the bottom, stalk and leaf part in the order, Total amounts of glucosinolates, in dry basis, were higher amount in Chinese cabbage, cabbage, radish, kale and mustard in the Order, and also in processing conditions, showed higher amount in fresh, sun dried, oven dried and cooked samples in the order. During the storage in Chinese cabbage and cabbage, total amounts of glucosinolate decreased gradually as time goes by.
Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) is the causal agent of black rot for cruciferous vegetables worldwide, especially for the cole crops such as cabbage and cauliflower. Due to the lack of resistant cabbage cultivars, black rot has brought about considerable yield losses in recent years in China. Understanding of the pathogen features is a key step for disease prevention, however, the pathogen diversity, population structure, and virulence are largely unknown. In this study, we studied 50 Xcc strains including 39 Xcc isolates collected from cabbage in 20 regions across China, using multilocus sequence genotyping (MLST), repetitive DNA sequence-based PCR (rep-PCR), and pathogenicity tests. For MLST analysis, a total of 12 allelic profiles (AP) were generated, among which the largest AP was AP1 containing 32 strains. Further cluster analysis of rep-PCR divided all strains into 14 DNA groups, with the largest group DNA I comprising of 34 strains, most of which also belonged to AP1. Inoculation tests showed that the representative Xcc strains collected from diverse regions performed differential virulence against three brassica hosts compared with races 1 and 4. Interestingly, these results indicated that AP1/DNA I was not only the main pathotype in China, but also a novel group that differed from the previously reported type races in both genotype and virulence. To our knowledge, this is the first extensive genetic diversity survey for Xcc strains in China, which provides evidence for cabbage resistance breeding and opens the gate for further cabbage-Xcc interaction studies.
Raphanus sativus L. (RS) is a cruciferous vegetable that is widely consumed in Korea. The anticancer activity of leaves of RS (RSL) extract has been investigated; however, no studies focused on its anti-inflammatory effects. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of RSL extract. In brief, RSL powder was fractionated into n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water-soluble fractions. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells were treated with each fraction for initial screening. It was found that the chloroform fraction significantly inhibited nitric oxide release in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells with a half maximal inhibitory concentration value of $196{\mu}g/mL$. In addition, the mRNA and protein expression levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase, measured using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and western blotting, respectively, were reduced in a concentration-dependent manner. Moreover, the inflammatory cyclooxygenase-2 enzyme expression decreased. Furthermore, the expression of nuclear factor-kappa B ($NF-{\kappa}B$), the key regulator of the transcriptional activation of the inflammatory cytokine genes, was reduced by the RSL chloroform fraction. Therefore, the results of our study suggest that RSL exhibits anti-inflammatory effects in LPS-stimulated macrophages via $NF-{\kappa}B$ inactivation.
Diet is one of the major factors that can exert a majorly influence on colorectal cancer risk. This systematic review aimed to find correlations between various diet types, food or nutrients and colorectal cancer risk among Asian populations. Search limitations include dAsian populations residing in Asia, being published from the year 2008 till present, and written in the English language. A total of 16 articles were included in this systematic review. We found that red meats, processed meats, preserved foods, saturated/animal fats, cholesterol, high sugar foods, spicy foods, tubers or refined carbohydrates have been found by most studies to have a positive association with colorectal cancer risk. Inversely, calcium/dairy foods, vitamin D, general vegetable/fruit/fiber consumption, cruciferous vegetables, soy bean/soy products, selenium, vitamins C,E and B12, lycophene, alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, folic acid and many other vitamins and minerals play a protective role against colorectal cancer risk. Associations of fish and seafood consumption with colorectal cancer risk are still inconclusive due to many varying findings, and require further more detailed studies to pinpoint the actual correlation. There is either a positive or no association for total meat consumption or white meats, however their influence is not as strong as with red and processed meats.
