  • Equilibrium swelling curves of N-isopropyl acrylamide(NIPA) gel and its ionized copolymer gels were obtained as a function of temperature. Discontinuous volume changes of the gels were observed. Phase transition temperature was increased with the ionized counter parts of the gels. Equilibrium swelling of ionized copolymer gel cylinder was found to depend strongly on their diameters. Crosslinking density of NIPA gel was adjusted by increasing N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide(BIS). Phase transition temperature was increased with the crosslinking density.

  • We have investigated the dynamic mechanical behavior of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) irradiated with varying doses of gamma rays. A relaxation peak in the loss factor curve, which has not been reported previously in the literature, is observed at a temperature above the crystal melting temperature. The peak is unique to UHMWPE and appears to be related to the high degree of entanglement. Because the temperature and intensity of the peak are reduced by irradiation-induced chain scission and crosslinking, respectively, we believe that the peak is associated with disentanglement relaxation. The behavior of the storage modulus in the melt state agrees with the classical theory of rubber elasticity.

  • The solution polymerization was conducted to synthesize pressure sensitive adhesive for polarizer film using acrylic monomers. 2-Ethylhexylacrylate, butylacrylate, acrylic acid were used as acrylic monomers. The ratio was 2-ethylliexylacrylate:butylacrylate:acrylic acid=25:50:3.6 by reflecting $-40^{\circ}C$ of glass transition temperature in the pressure sensitive adhesive. When 1 wt% of coupling agent was added to the polymerized pressure sensitive adhesive, the light transmissivity was significantly increased. This result is due to the enhancement of adhesive power against liquid crystal cell by Si-O bond of coupling agents. Cross-linking agent was added by 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 wt% with respect to the synthesized polymer. Initial tackiness decreased, while cohesion increased with increasing crosslinking agent. In the analysis of contact angle, the increase of crosslinking agents yielded the enhancement of surface energy, resulting in the decrease of contact angle. From the measurement of heat resistance, the acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive showed excellent heat resistance regardless of change in temperature and contents in crosslinking agent. In the observation of a cutting plane, the increased crosslinking agent represented a smoother and cleaner section. Comprehensively, the optimum additive amount of crosslinking agent was determined to be 1.0 wt% to monomer.

  • The positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effects of high density polyethylene (HDPE)/carbon black composite materials were investigated by enhancing adhesive characteristics of electrodes and controlling HDPE chemical crosslinking. When the silver paste was used as an electrode for the same 45 wt% HDPE/carbon composites, the resistance was over 1 $\Omega$, which should be compared with the resistance of 0.2 $\Omega$ for the dendritic copper electrode. In general, the silver-paste electrode exhibited higher electrical resistance than cupper electrode due to the interfacial resistance between the electrode and PTC composites. The HDPE/carbon composite exhibited typical PTC characteristics maintaining a constant resistance up to vicat point and showing a maximum at the melting point of HDPE. The crosslinked HDPE significantly decreased the negative temperature coefficient (NTC) phenomena, and desirably showed a constant or slightly increasing feature of electrical resistance in the high temperature region.

  • 2,3,5,6-Tetramethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (TMPD) based polyimide (PI) were crosslinked with 1,2-Diaminoethane (DAE) and 1,6-Diaminohexane (DAH) to enhance gas transport properties. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) studies show that imide groups were converted into amide groups during crosslinking process. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results indicate that the degradation temperature of crosslinked PI membranes decreased after crosslinking. This is due to degradation of alkyl group in crosslinking agent. The d-space of crosslinked PI membranes decreased with increasing crosslinking time. The ideal permeability for $CH_4$, $N_2$, $O_2$, and $CO_2$ decreased after crosslinking and the ideal permeability of crosslinked PI membranes induced by DAH is larger than that by DAE. In contrast, the permselectivity of $CO_2/CH_4$, $CO_2/N_2$ and $O_2/N_2$ increased during crosslinking. For the gas pair of $CO_2/CH_4$, the maximum increment is about 39.5% after 6 minutes of DAE crosslinking. Also, that of $O_2/N_2$ gas pair is about 20.5% after 6 minutes of DAE crosslinking. According to these result, DAE is more suitable for enhanced permselectivity than DAH. On the contrary, DAE is not useful for $CO_2/N_2$ separation due to reduction in $CO_2/N_2$ permselectivity after 3 minutes DAE crosslinking.

  • With the synthesis of hyper crosslinked polymer particle (HCPP), having microporous structure with hydroxyl functional group, synthesized via polymerization reaction consists of three stepssuspension polymerization, hyper crosslinking by Friedel-Craft catalysis and hydrolysis reaction, the effects of the ratio of each monomer, hyper crosslinking conditions and $CO_2$ supercritical drying on the variations of surface morphology, pore size & distribution and BET surface area of HCPP have been investigated. It was observed that the formation of surface crack or fracture of HCPP was intimately related with the degree of hyper crosslinking reaction between microphase separated domains. And the value of BET surface area of HCPP increased with the increase of reaction temperature, time and the amounts of solvent used in hyper crosslinking step. Moreover, $CO_2$ supercritical drying was proven to be a very effective method for removing stabilizer, unreacted monomers and oligomers from HCPP but needed to add methanol as a co-solvent for efficient removing of residual catalyst.

  • Porous carbon from charcoal filled polypropylene composites were prepared and their mechanical properties were evaluated. In preparing the composites, crosslinking agent (sodium benzonate) were used in order to improve the bonding force between matrix and fillers. In this study, the effects of charcoal powder and sodium benzonate concentration on the mechanical properties and interface phenomena on the composites were evaluated. The mechanical properties of composites increased progressively with the decrease of filler loading. In the case of addition of the crosslinking agent into the composite, the mechanical properties were increased and showed maximum value at the 3 wt% concentration of sodium benzonate. According to the result of the TGA, the weight loss of composite according to crosslinking agent was not observed and initial thermal degradation temperature of composite reinforced charcoal was located at $390^{\circ}C$.

  • Glass transition temperatures($T_g$) of poly(phenylene sulfide sulfone)[PPSS], which were heat treated at various temperature and time, were studied by DSC. Up to $230^{\circ}C$, $T_g$ of heat treated PPSS were increased with increasing the heat treated time. When the sample was heated at $260^{\circ}C$ for 30 minute and $280^{\circ}C$ for 10 minute, however, $T_g$ of those samples were decreased. These phenomena can be explained by the factors of chain extension reaction, oxidative crosslinking, and thermal crosslinking.

  • It has been considered that malic acid, $\alpha$-hydroky succinic acid, could not form crosslinks in the cellulosic materials unless activated by other polycarboxylic acids such as butanetetracarboxylic acid or citric acid because there are only two carboxylic acids per molecule available fur the formation of one anhydride intermediate. However we found that the dicarboxylic malic acid with sodium hypophosphite catalyst without the addition of other crosslinkers was able to improve wrinkle resistance of cotton up to $294^{\circ}$(dry WRA) and $285^{\circ}$ (wet WRA), which is a measure of crosslinking level in cotton. $^1$H FT-NMR, FT-IR and GPC analysis indicated the in-situ formation of an trimeric $\alpha$, $\beta$-rnalic acid with a composition of 1:3 through the esterification between hydroxyl group and one of carboxylic groups in malic acid during curing. The crosslinking of cotton was attributed to the trimeric $\alpha$, $\beta$-malic acid, a tetracarboxylic acid, which can form two anhydride rings during curing. The influence of crosslinking conditions such as concentrations of malic acid and catalyst, pH of the formulation bath, and curing temperature were investigated in terms of imparted wrinkle resistance and whiteness. The addition of reactive polyurethane resin in the formulation slightly increased the mechanical strength retention of crosslinked fabric coupled with additional increase in wrinkle resistance.

  • Hyaluronic acid-based beads were prepared in order to develop a biomedical material for augumentation. Hyaluronic acid was crosslinked by 1,3-butadiene diepoxide in a suspension state maintained by rapid mixing of soybeen oil and hyaluronic acid solution. The particle size, surface area and swelling ratio were measured to investigate the physical properties of the synthesized beads and the bead surface was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The beads were formed in the range of $5-12vol\%$ concentration of crosslinking agent, which showed monodisperse size distribution. Both BET surface area and swelling ratio decreased as the concentration of either hyaluronic acid or crosslinking agent increased, and crosslinking temperature decreased. Bead size could be effectively controlled by mixing speed without affecting other physical property.
