  • The purpose of this study is the analysis of 'perpendicular crossing Dori' with a structural character of Ddeulzip in Andong cultural area. There are many structural methods to solve the problems of Ddeuljip which is connected space in the rectangular type. There are 'Slope Base', 'Woosangak' roof, 'Seosangak' roof, and '4 beam roof framing' Moreover, they have been used 'perpendicular crossing Dori'. Its characters are as follows ; 1. The 'perpendicular crossing Dori' structure is occurred in different depth of width and length space of 'ㄱ' typed plan. At that time the beam of width is crossed in the middle of the beam of length without the order under them. 2. The 'perpendicular crossing Dori' structure is the method of free depth of width in regular distance of column which is different from general usage of balcony order. 3. The 'perpendicular crossing Dori' structure is founded north-western area of Andong Cultural Area(Bonghwa, Andong, Youngju, and Yeacheun). The best old sample was in Andong(16C) and the next is Yeacheun(17C) and the last is Bonghwa(18C). 4. The frequency in use of roof type of 'perpendicular crossing Dori' structure is 64% of 'Seosangak' and 36% of 'Woosangak'. The sample of 'Woosangak' house of 'perpendicular crossing Dori' structure is concentrated in Bonghwa. 5. The best merit of the 'perpendicular crossing Dori' structure is usage of double swing window in front of Anbang, It is the spacial success which overcomes the structural limits. And it is the structural rationality.

  • An object detection algorithm using a modified IDM(Image Differential Method) is proposed for detecting an object in a level crossing area. The conventional object detection method using LASER light has the deadzone that it cannot detect small objects, while the object detection method using image data in a level crossing area can detect such small objects. But the image data in a level crossing area can be changeable easily because the data is outdoor and sensitive to such surrounding environments as the change of the sun beam, the shadow of cars, and so on. So we resolve these problems by adding the normalization and the process for shadow of the image data in a level crossing area to the basic IDM(Image Differential Method).

  • Korea Claim Adjustor Association(KCAA) defines the near pedestrian crossing accidents as those accidents that occurred in the area within 25m from pedestrian crossing on the arterial road and within 15m from pedestrian crossing on other classes of road. Accidents between pedestrian crossing and stop line are classified as the accident near pedestrian crossing. Reviewing of current statute and court precedent, three kinds of traffic accidents which are accidents occurred in the pedestrian crossing. near pedestrian crossing and the area between pedestrian crossing and stop line. should be distinguished by different pedestrian contributory negligence. To find out how different they are. we surveyed transportation society members about the contributory negligence of traffic accidents between pedestrian crossing and stop line and the results are as follows : (1) The current two classification of pedestrian crossing accidents and near pedestrian crossing accidents should be changed to three classification of pedestrian crossing accidents that includes accidents on pedestrian crossing, near pedestrian crossing and between pedestrian crossing and the stop line. (2) For the pedestrian's contributory negligence, the least reasonability to pedestrian is accident on the pedestrian crossing. The next one is the accident between pedestrian crossing and stop line and the last is the accident near pedestrian crossing. (3) Pedestrian contributory negligence for accident by space is recommended as 〈table 8〉, 〈table 9〉, 〈table 10〉. (4) Contributory negligence rate of the accident on the pedestrian crossing during red light should be modified to be less than that of near pedestrian crossing.

  • The intelligent safety system for level crossing which employs information and communication technology has been developed in USA and Japan, etc. But, in Korea, the relevant research has not been performed. In this paper, we analyze the cause of railway level crossing accidents and the inherent problem of the existing safety equipments. Based on analyzed results, we design the intelligent safety system which prevent collision between a train and a vehicle. This system displays train approaching information in real-time at roadside warning devices, informs approaching train of the detected obstacle in crossing areas, and is interconnected with traffic signal to empty the crossing area before train comes. Especially, we present the video based obstacle detection algorithm and verify its performance with prototype H/W since the abrupt obstacles in crossing areas are the main cause of level crossing accidents. We identify that the presented scheme detects both pedestrian and vehicle with good performance. Currently, we demonstrate developed railway crossing intelligence system at one crossing of Young-dong-seon line of Korail with Sea Train cockpit.

  • The safety equipments of railway level crossing which are installed at intersections between roads and railway lines prevent level crossing accidents by informing all of the vehicles and pedestrians of approaching trains. • Recently, the crossing tunnel has been constructed frequently to connect the separated area by highway and railroad. The construction of crossing tunnel must be progressed while maintaining the existing traffic of the highway as well as railroad. There are many cross funnelling methods such as NTR, TRCM, Messer Shield, Front Jacking, and Pipe Roof Method. The advantages of adopting RPS(Roof Panel Shield) method in crossing tunnel construction with comparing other existing cross funnelling methods are needed a little volume of concrete and easy to change the direction of cutting shoe during the construction of pipe roof, The 3-dimensional numerical analysis of RPS to consider the arching effect was performed for the application in the crossing tunnel under railroad. The earth pressure distribution and settlement were predicted when the RPS method was applied during the excavation for crossing railroad tunnel construction.

  • The crossing laminar screw fixation might be the most recently developed approach among various fixation techniques for C2. The new construct has stability comparable to transarticular or transpedicular screw fixation without risk of vertebral artery injury. Quantitative anatomical studies about C2 vertebra suggest significant variation in the thickness of C2 lamina as well as cross sectional area of junction of lamina and spinous process. We present an elderly patient who underwent an occipito-cervical stabilization incorporating crossed C2 laminar screw fixation. We preoperatively recognized that she had low profiles of C2 lamina, and thus made a modification of trajectory for the inferiorly crossing screw. We introduce a simple modification of crossing C2 laminar screw technique to improve stability in patients with low laminar profiles.

  • Pedestrian safety was recently highlighted with a yellow carpet, a yellow-colored pavement material prepared for children waiting for signals for pedestrian crossing, without validation of its efficiency in practice. It was a promising device likely to assist highway safety by stimulating pedestrian to step on the yellow-colored area; it was generally called nudge effects. This paper delivers a study conducted to check the effectiveness of yellow carpet in three different aspects in vehicle driver's perspective by applying the newly introduced information technology (IT) service: Visual Attention Software (VAS). It was assumed that VAS developed by 3M in the United States should be able explain the Korean drivers' visual reaction behaviors since technology embedded in VAS was developed based on and proved by other various international countries and continents in the world. A set of pictures was taken at thirteen different field sites in seven school zone areas in the Seoul metropolitan area before and after the installation of a yellow carpet, respectively. Sets of those pictures were analyzed with VAS, and the results were compared based on the selective safety measures: the likely focusing on standing pedestrians (waiting for a pedestrian's green signal time) affected by its background (yellow-colored pavement) contrasting him or her. The test results from a set of before-and-after comparison analyses showed that the placement of yellow carpet would (1) increase 71% of driver's visual attention on pedestrian crossing areas and (2) change the sequential order of visual attention on that area 2.4 steps ahead. The findings would enhance deployment of such promising efficiency and thus increase children safety in pedestrian crossing. The result was promising to highlight the way to support the changes in conservative traffic safety engineering field by applying the advanced IT services, while much robust research was recommended to overcome the limitation of simplification of this study.

  • Railroad crossing crashes are fewer than road crashes, but with regard to crash severity, they can be serious injury crashes. There should be, therefore, enormous efforts to increase the safety of railroad crossings. The objective of this paper is to identify and understand factors associated with railroad crossing crashes. Statistical models are used to examine the relationships between crossing accidents and geometric elements of crossings. The results show the Poisson model is the most appropriate method for the crossing accidents, because overdispersion was not observed. This study identifies seven significant factors associated with railroad crossing crashes through the main and variant models. With regard to explanatory factors on crossing safety, the total traffic volume, daily train volume, presence of commercial area around crossings, distance of train detector from crossings, time duration between the activation of warning signals and gates, crossing types, and speed hump were found to affect the safety of railroad crossings.
