Cellulose fibers were stabilized by treatment with an electron-beam (E-beam). The properties of the stabilized fibers were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The E-beam-stabilized cellulose fibers were carbonized in N2 gas at 800℃ for 1 h, and their carbonization yields were measured. The structure of the cellulose fibers was determined to have changed to hemicellulose and cross-linked cellulose as a result of the E-beam stabilization. The hemicellulose decreased the initial decomposition temperature, and the cross-linked bonds increased the carbonization yield of the cellulose fibers. Increasing the absorbed E-beam dose to 1500 kGy increased the carbonization yield of the cellulose-based carbon fiber by 27.5% upon exposure compared to untreated cellulose fibers.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the rheological properties of potato starch cross-linked with different concentrations (0, 0.125, 0.25, and 0.5%, w/v) of cross-linking agents (10 g of adipic acid and 40 g of acetic anhydride). Cross-linked potato starch dispersions showed shear-thinning behaviors (n=0.43~0.63) at $25^{\circ}C$. Apparent viscosity (${\eta}_{a,100}$), consistency index (K), and yield stress (${\sigma}_{oc}$) significantly increased with an increase in the concentrations of cross-linking agents from 0.125 to 0.5% (w/v). Storage modulus (G') and loss modulus (G'') increased, whereas complex viscosity (${\eta}^*$) was reduced with increasing frequency (${\omega}$) from 0.63 to 62.8 rad/s. Magnitudes of G' and G'' for cross-linked potato starch were significantly increased with an elevation in the concentrations of cross-linking agents. G' values of cross-linked potato starches were significantly higher than G'', indicating that the starches had more elastic properties than viscous properties. Cox-Merz rule was not applicable to potato starch dispersions.
Inclusion complexes of the p-nitrophenol with ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin (CD), sulfated ${\beta}$-CD, and ${\beta}$-CD polymer cross-linked with epichlorohydrine (EP) were prepared and characterized by Raman spectroscopy. The intensity of vibration peaks of the C-O and C-N at 1284 and $856cm^{-1}$ of the p-nitrophenol in the presence of EP-linked CD polymer was remarkably increased, respectively. The vibration modes at 1284 and $856cm^{-1}$ are assigned to the out-of phase C-C-O stretching mode and the C-N stretching mode, respectively. The vibration peaks at 1284 and $856cm^{-1}$ increased with increasing the content of EP-linked CD polymers, while decreased with increasing the p-nitrophenol content. Furthermore, the vibration mode of the $NO_2$ symmetric stretch at $1344cm^{-1}$ enhanced with increasing the content of p-nitrophenol.

The present article describes a novel method of preparing the sulfonated polysulfone-based PEMs for DMFC, which are excellent in film quality, proton conductivity, methanol impermeability and mechanical properties. No depression in film quality or difficulty in film preparation is observed, even though sulfonated group of the PEMs are kept as high as 70 mol %. Allyl-terminated cooligo-PESs containing the organic sulfonate groups were solvent-cast into films and then thermally treated for cross-linking. Cross-linked sulfonated polysulfone-based PEMs gave unprecedented reduction of methanol cross-over and high ionic conductivity through in-situ thermal polymerization and cross-linking of telechelic sulfonated sulfone oligomers during a membrane preparation.

Previous studies have been performed for the sero-identification of selected species of Bacteroides by immunofluorescence antibody techniques and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using species-specific rabbit antisera to B. gingivalis, B. intermedius, and B. melaninogenicus. However, these studies have not commented on the serological cross-reactivity between these 3 species of black- pigmented Bacteroides. For the cross-reactivity study, antisera to B. gingivalis ATCC 33277, B. intermedius ATC C25261 and B. asaccharolyticus ATCC 25260 were raised from rabbits. Preliminary study for observing the cross-reactivity between these species was performed by indirect immunoflourescence technique. Immunoabsorption of the antisera was done with bacterial cells from the other species and the species-specificity of the antisera was conformed by the absence of reactivity with bacterial strains from the other species by indirect immunofluorescence technique and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Three representative unabsorbed antisera cross-reacted strongly with cells from the other species. Especially, anti-B. asaccharolyticus ATCC 25260 antiserum showed a strong cross-reactivity with B. gingivalis ATCC33277. After immunoabsorption of 3 representative antisera with the other species, the cross-reactivity was found only between B. gingivalis ATCC 33277 and B. asaccharolyticus ATCC 25260. Further study would be necessary to clarify the cross-reactivity between important oral black-pigmented Bacteroides from subgingival plaque or bacterial colonies for rapid identification.
Cross linked chitosan beads showed high selective adsorption abilities in order of $Au^{3+}$ > $Hg^{2+}$ > $Cu^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ > $Pt^{4+}$ > ${UO_2}^{2+}$ ions in mixed solution of various metal ions at pH 4.5. N-methyltyiobenzylated chitosan beads(MTB-chitosan beads) were prepared treating with p-(methylthio) benzaldehyde after cross linking of chitosan beads to give them a high selectivity in adsorption of metal ions. The MTB-chitosan beads demonstrated their selectivity on precious metals among various metal ions distinctively. Particularly, the MTB-chitosan had a peculiar selective adsorption on $Pd^{2+}$, $Au^{2+}$, and $Hg^{2+}$ions whilst the cross linked chitosan beads showed its high adsorption on $Pd^{2+}$ at pH 1.1. On the other hand, the cross linked chitosan beads showed its superiority in selective adsorption on $Au^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, and $Hg^{2+}$ions to the MTB-chitosan at pH 4.5 of the test solution. Thus metal selectivities were given to chitosan beads through chemical modifications.
Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIOs)-embedded chitosan microspheres were developed for magnetic resonance (MR)-traceable embolotherapy. SPIOs-loaded chitosan microspheres were prepared by emulsion and cross-linking technique and 100-200 ${\mu}m$ sized spherical microsparticles were obtained. Loading efficacy and loading amount of SPIOs in microspheres were about 40% and 0.26-0.32%, respectively, when measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. Within 30 days, about 60% of the incorporated SPIOs were released from low cross-linked microspheres, whereas only about 40% of SPIOs was released from highly cross-linked microspheres. Highly cross-linked microspheres were more efficient for lower degree of swelling leading to secure entrapment of SPIOs in matrix. Prepared novel embolic microspheres are expected to be practically applicable for traceable embolotherapy with high resolution and sensitivity through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
To develop an artificial bone substitute that is gradually degraded and replaced by the regenerated natural bone, the authors designed a composite that is consisted of calcium phosphate and collagen. To use as the structural matrix of the composite, collagen was purified from human umbilical cord. The obtained collagen was treated by pepsin to remove telopeptides, and finally, the immune-free atelocollagen was produced: The cross linked atelocollagen was highly resistant to the collagenase induced collagenolysis. The cross linked collagen demonstrated an improved tensile strength.
