  • This work numerically investigates the effects of Reynolds number ReD (= 100 - 150), cross-sectional aspect ratio AR = ( 0.25 -1.0), and attack angle α (= 0° - 90°) on the forces, Strouhal number, and wake of an elliptical cylinder, where ReD is based on the freestream velocity and cylinder cross-section height normal to the freestream flow, AR is the ratio of the minor axis to the major axis of the elliptical cylinder, and α is the angle between the cylinder major axis and the incoming flow. At ReD = 100, two distinct wake structures are identified, namely 'Steady wake' (pattern I) and 'Karman wake followed by a steady wake (pattern II)' when AR and α are varied in the ranges specified. When ReD is increased to 150, an additional wake pattern, 'Karman wake followed by secondary wake (pattern III)' materializes. Pattern I is characterized by two steady bubbles forming behind the cylinder. Pattern II features Karman vortex street immediately behind the cylinder, with the vortex street transmuting to two steady shear layers downstream. Inflection angle αi = 32°, 37.5° and 45° are identified for AR = 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75, respectively, where the wake asymmetry is the greatest. The αi effectively distinguishes the dependence on α and AR of force and vortex shedding frequency at either ReD. In Pattern III, the Karman street forming behind the cylinder is modified to a secondary vortex street. At a given AR and α, ReD = 150 renders higher fluctuating lift and Strouhal number than ReD = 100.

  • Fouling behavior of polyethylene capillary membranes was examined by measuring the flux of bentonite colloidal suspensions through the cross flow micro filtration. The membrane fouling was due to the three mechanisms: the cake formation on the membrane surface, the standard pore blocking and the complete pore blocking by particles. These mechanisms were simultaneously responsible for the membrane fouling, being significantly governed by the cake filtration. In the total fouling at $1.0kg/cm^2$ TMP condition, the complete blocking was 3.36%, the standard blocking 3.18% and the cake filtration 96.05%. For 1000 ppm feed solution, the complete blocking was 1.71% compared with the standard blocking of 1.90% and the cake filtration of 96.39%. And 96.14% of the total fouling was generated at the initial period of filtration. The cake filtration effect was larger on $0.34{\mu}m$ pore membrane than on $0.24{\mu}m$ pore membrane. With the increase in cross flow velocity, the component fouling decreased by 10.20%, and the ratio of pore blocking to total fouling increased.

  • A two color PIV technique has been developed for visualization of complex and high speed flow in a ramjet combustor. Two color PIV has the advantages that velocity distribytions in high speed flowfields can be measured simply by varying the time interval between two different laser beams and a directional ambiguity problem can be solved by color separation, and then a singnal-to-noise ratio can be increased through nearly perfect cross-correlation. As a basic research of the ramjet engine, a 2-D shaped combustor with two symmetric air intakes has been manufactured and an experimental study has been conducted using a two color PIV technique. The flow characteristics such as recirculation zones and two intake air mixing have been investigated varying inlet angles and dome heights. It is found that the size and air mass ratio of reciculation zones are affected mainly by an inlet angle, but not much by a dome height.

  • This study was carried out to(1) visualize the installation effect of an anti-wind net; (2) evaluate structural stability of typical anti-wind nets in Jeju; and (3) present the optimal specification of pipes in an anti-wind net for maximum instant wind velocities of 40 m/s and 45 m/s. The analyses were done for anti-wind nets with a mesh of 4 mm and a height of 3 m by using CFX and ANSYS. The results showed that the wind went down due to flow resistance when passing through an. anti-wind net. The anti-wind net with the supporting pipe being installed every two main columns was certainly unstable because the main column not sustained by the supporting pipe became cantilever. With regard to the position of a fixing point of the supporting pipe, von Mises stress on pipes was certainly increased as vertical positions of the supporting pipe were changed to be too lower or higher than an adequate position but there was little difference according to horizontal positions. The adequate vertical position was $2{\sim}2.5\;m$ high from the ground. For a maximum instant wind velocity of 40 m/s, the optimal specification of pipes was a main column of ${\varphi}48.1{\times}2.1$ t@2,000, cross beams(bottom and top) of ${\varphi}26.7{\times}1.9\;t$, cross beams(center) of ${\varphi}33.5{\times}2.1$ t/2ea and a supporting pipe of ${\varphi}31.8{\times}1.5$ t@2,000. In case of a maximum instant wind velocity of 45 m/s, the optimal specification of pipes with structural stability was a main column of ${\varphi}48.6{\times}3.25$ t@2,000, cross beams(bottom and top) of ${\varphi}26.7{\times}1.9\;t$, cross beams(center) of ${\varphi}48.1{\times}2.1$ t/2ea and a supporting pipe of ${\varphi}31.8{\times}1.5$ t@2,000.

  • Constructed wetlands are widely applied in urban and rural areas for various purposes such as pollutants reduction, acquisition of eco-spaces and habitats, flooding reduction, acquisition of water resources and environmental education. Since the design of constructed wetlands utilizes ecosystems, special consideration must be given to ecological mechanisms, environmental mechanisms and hydrological mechanisms. To ensure the sustainable functionality of constructed wetlands, it is necessary to achieve stable flow rate and velocity, and remove sediments to ensure sufficient space for detention. To enhance the efficiency of constructed wetland sedimentation basins, this study determined the optimal position for baffle installation, and applied Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to the cross-sectional design of wetlands. CFD analysis revealed that the decrease in flow velocity with baffle installation enhanced the efficiency of sedimentation of particulate matters. Vertical baffles had higher sedimentation efficiency than those with an inclined angle. When vertical baffles were installed in the sedimentation basin of a hybrid constructed wetland to reduce non-point source pollutants in urban areas, the average flow velocity within the basin decreased by 10~30%, while the sedimentation efficiency improved by 1.3~1.5 times. The application of CFD to constructed wetlands is expected to improve the cost efficiency of designing hybrid constructed wetlands with high removal efficiency.

  • This study is about atherosclerosis which occupies the highest rate in many diseases people have and we have studied about atherosclerosis for abdominal aorta. Atherosclerosis is the phenomenon which blood vessel gets narrower, harder and thicker due to the stenosis of colesterol in blood vessel. If it becomes worse, arteries will be hard and blood can't flow smoothly, and even it can reach to death. In this study, the geometric models of the considered stenotic blood flow are two different types of constriction of cross-sectional area of blood vessel; 20 and 45% of constriction in each elastic wall and rigid wall. We have modeled by using finite element method to observe the changes of velocity and pressure. In case of the diameter of blood vessel decreased 45% in elastic wall model, the values of velocity and pressure were higher than the case of 20% and in case of the diameter of blood vessel decreased 45% in rigid wall model, the values of velocity and pressure were higher than the case of 20%. In cases of elastic wall models of the diameters of blood vessels decreased each of 20% and 45%, recirculation zones appeared. This results show understanding of hemodynamic properties depending on stenosed blood vessels.

  • Leading edge extension(LEX) in a highly swept shape applied to a delta wing features the modern air-fighters. The LEX vortices generated upon the upper surface of the wing at high angle of attack enhance the lift force of the delta wing by way of increased negative suction pressure over the surfaces. The present 3-D stereo PIV includes the Identification of 2-D cross-correlation equation, stereo matching of 2-D velocity vectors of two cameras, accurate calculation of 3-D velocity vectors by homogeneous coordinate system, removal of error vectors by a statistical method followed by a continuity equation criterion and so on. A delta wing model with or without LEX was immersed in a circulating water channel. Two high-resolution, high-speed digital cameras$(1280pixel\times1024pixel)$ were used to allow the time-resolved animation work. The present dynamic stereo PIV represents the complicated vortex behavior, especially, in terms of time-dependent characteristics of the vortices at given measuring sections. Quantities such as three velocity vector components, vorticity and other flow information can be easily visualized via the 3D time-resolved post-processing to make the easy understanding of the LEX effect or vortex emerging and collapse which are important phenomena occurring in the field of delta wing aerodynamics.

  • The study on the velocity distribution and the pressure drop characteristic of the nuclear fuel assembly is of importance for the thermal hydraulic design and safety analysis. The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate the hydraulic mixing behind the different kinds of spacer grids in the now or rod bundles. In this study, the detailed hydraulic characteristics in subchannels of 5$\times$5 PWR(Pressurized Water Reactor) rod bundles were measured using one-component He-Ne LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimeter). Measurements of the axial velocity, turbulent intensities and pressure drops were peformed Lateral velocity, turbulent intensities and Reynolds shear stress were also measured by adjust-ing LDV alignment. Friction factors in rod bundles and loss coefficients for spacer grids were evaluated from the measured pressure drops. Hydraulic mixing performance for different kinds of spacer grids could be investigated by estimating the turbulent cross-flow mixing rates between neighboring subchannels.

  • The Free surface influenced the wake behind a circular cylinder and its effects were investigated experimentally in a circulating water channe with the variation of water depth Instantaneous velocity fields were measured in this paper. the measured results has been compared with each other to investigate the flow characteristics of the circular cylinder's 2-dimensional section at $Re=1.0\times10^3$ using 2-frame grey level cross correlation PIV method. The flow around the circular cylinder with free surface affected the wake structure. especially, in case of d=1.0D, the boundary layer was measured in the whole area. The separation point and boundary layer of the circular cylinder could be controlled by the water depth.
