  • This paper will suggest that the 1 cross orthogonal loop type sensor improves on the orthogonal loop form sensor-head, which is available a calibration of the linear birefringence, when a fiber optic current sensor was composed. An output characteristics of the 1 cross orthogonal loop form, a general closed loop form, the orthogonal loop form are compared by the IEC(International Electrotechnical Commission) 60044-8 standard, and the state of polarization is compared with three forms. As a result, when the closed loop form was changed to the orthogonal loop form, retardation decreased 15.3[%]. When the closed loop form was changed to the 1 cross orthogonal loop type, the retardation decreased 33.8[%]. As a result of the Faraday Effect measurement, the 1 cross orthogonal loop form has the highest output characteristic and the lowest error ratio. It met the 0.5 class of the IEC 60044-8 standard. Thus, in application of the 1cross orthogonal loop form, the possibility to develop high reliability fiber optic current sensors that have a high output and stable error ratio rises is increased.

  • In this paper, in order to suggest an optimal polarization diversity composition method in indoor radio wave propagation environments, the variation of the cross polarization discrimination(XPD) was theoretically analyzed by a computer simulation and compared to the actual measured data. From the results, it can be seen that the cross polarization discrimination of the case, a circularly polarized antenna was used at the transmitting end as well as the vertical and horizontal polarized antenna branches were used at receiving end (CV-CH), is lower than that of the case, horizontal polarized antenna at the transmitting end as well as the horizontal and vertical polarized antenna branches at the receiving end(HH-HV), and that of the case, vertical polarized antenna at the transmitting end as well as the vertical and horizontal polarized antenna branches at the receiving end(VV-VH). In this paper, to get more effective CV-CH polarization diversity composition, the amount of cross polarization discrimination values at the signals received by horizontal polarized antenna is compensated and the polarization diversity effect through the cumulative probability distribution is estimated. From the evaluation results, it was found that the polarization diversity effect was better at the compensated case than at the uncompensated case. On the other hand, it can be known that the polarization diversity effect is getting better as the cross polarization discrimination values are getting lower, and also be known that the effect can be improved if a transmitting antenna is composed of the ellipse polarized antenna by adjusting the axial ratio of the circularly polarized antenna and, a receiving antenna is made up of the vertical and horizontal polarized antenna branches.

  • This paper introduces a technique to obtain the broadband characteristics of circularly polarized antennas using an L-shaped probe. A waveguide antenna is suitable for obtaining high gain and handling convenience in some applications; however, the asymmetrical structure of the L-shaped probe results in cross-polarization and frequency dependence on the field distribution of higher-order modes (HOM). In addition to the basic characteristics of a waveguide antenna with an L-shaped probe, the author discusses some techniques to reduce the HOM and cross-polarization. As a result, the 3-dB axial ratio (AR) is obtained with the fundamental mode even when the frequency is expanded to the region for HOM of TM. This reduction is mainly due to the cutoff structure to the TM mode around the short wall of the waveguide. Furthermore, some aperture modification techniques can reduce the cross-polarization in a wide range of angles in the radiation pattern. Such techniques and their mechanisms are discussed in this paper. The obtained performance shows that the proposed antennas have a wide range of angles of 3-dB AR in the radiation pattern, broadband characteristics in impedance and AR, and low variation in group velocity.

  • In this paper, a multi polarization reconfigurable microstrip antenna that can be used selectively for four polarizations(vertical polarization, horizontal polarization, right hand circular polarization, left hand circular polarization) at the S-band is presented. The proposed antenna consists of four PIN diodes and a microstrip patch with a cross slot and a circular slot and is fed by utiliting electromagnetic coupling between the microstrip patch and the feed line. The proposed antenna has a DC bias network to supply DC voltage to each PIN diode and the polarization can be determined by controlling the ON /OFF states of four PIN diodes. The fabricated antenna has a VSWR below 2 in the vertical polarization(3.17~3.21 GHz), the horizontal polarization(3.16~3.20 GHz), the left hand circular polarization (3.08~3.19 GHz), and the right hand circular polarization(3.10~3.2 GHz) frequency bands. The designed antenna has the cross polarization level higher than 20 dB, a gain over 5 dBi for the linear polarization states, and 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth wider than 50 MHz in the circular polarization states.

  • In this study, we used EBG(electromagnetic band gap) reflector to change bi-directional radiation of circular polarization into uni-directional radiation of equiangular spiral antenna. When the height of spiral arm from EBG reflector is 0.07 wavelength of the lowest operating frequency, the axial ratio of the circular polarization was deteriorated. In this paper, we analyzed the magnitude and the time phase difference of $E_{\theta},E_{\phi}$ that generates right hand circle polarization that is co-polarization at +z direction and proposed the improving condition for axial ratio at all related frequency range. As a result, we obtained that the axial ratio was below 3[dB] at range of 3 ~ 10[dB], the gain was improved about 3[dB] with comparison to bi-directional radiation at free space, and $S_{11}$ was below -10[dB] at all related frequency range.

  • In this paper, a novel microstrip patch antenna with switchable polarization is proposed. The proposed antenna has a simple structure, consisting of a square radiating patch, a pair of L-type spur-lines, and a microstrip line feed. It can produce either linear polarization or circular polarization by setting the diode on or off From the measured results, low cross polarization levels when operated in the linear polarization, and good axial ratios in the circular state have been observed.

  • In this paper, a circular microstrip patch antenna for switchable polarization is presented. For the switchable polarization, pairs of tuning stubs and two PIN diodes are utilized. By independently setting the PIN diodes on or off, the antenna produces either linear polarization or circular polarization. From the results, the -10 dB impedance bandwidths of 57.0 MHz($2.4\%$) and 50.0 MHz($2.1\%$) when operated in the linear polarization, and the 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of $1.3\%$ with minimum of 0.2 and 0.9 dB in the circular polarization have been observed.

  • The piezoelectricity and polarization of multilayer ceramic actuators, being designed to stack ceramic layer and electrode layer alternately, were investigated under a consideration of geometry, the thickness ratio of the ceramic layer to electrode layer The actuators were fabricated by tape-casting of $0.42PbTiO_3-0.38PbZrO_3-0.2Pb(Mn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$ followed by laminating, burn-out and co-firing process. The actuators of $5\times5mm^2$ in area were formed in a way that $60{\sim}200{\mu}m$ thick ceramics were stacked 10 times alternately with $5{\mu}m$ thick electrode. Increase in polarization and electric field-displacement with increasing thickness ratio of the ceramic/electrode layer and thickness/cross section ratio were attributed to the change of $non-180^{\circ}/180^{\circ}$ domain ratio which was affected by the interlayer internal stress and Poisson ratio of ceramic layer. The piezoelectricity and actuation behaviors were found to be dependent upon the volume ratio (or thickness ratio) of ceramic layer relative to ceramic layer. Concerning with the existence of internal stress, the field-induced polarization and deformation were described in the multilayer actuator.

  • Dual-polarized transmission is one of the effective methods to transmit such a high speed data thanks to two independent channel leads to the orthogonal feature between RHCP (Right-Hand Circular Polarization) and LHCP (Left-Hand Circular Polarization). However, in practical case, the transmitted signal by RHCP polarized antenna in satellite can be occurred at the output port of LHCP polarized antenna in ground station, vice versa. XPD (Cross-Polarization Discrimination) is the ratio of the signal level at the output of a receiving antenna that is nominally co-polarized to the transmitting antenna to the output of a receiving antenna of the same gain but nominally orthogonally polarized to the transmitting antenna. In this paper, the detailed estimation of XPD within the interface between satellite and ground station is written and the influence of XPD to link performance is also described.
