  • This study aims to understand the contribution rate of plant parts on biomass in five winter forage crops including barley, wheat, oat, rye and triticale. In barley and oat, the major plant parts on dry matter yields were changed from culm to spike at 20 days after heading(DAH), but culm was very important part on biomass of rye, wheat and triticales until 30DAH. Wheat, rye and triticales showed same pattern in dry weight increase indicating that culm was main component of biomass from heading stage but spike became heavier after 30 DAR. Barley and oat were similar in dry weight increase where spike was the main components of biomass at 20 DAR. After heading stage the major biomass of most winter forage crops were dependent on the weight of culm and spike, while the contribution of leaves to plant biomass was lower as compared to culm and spike. Thus culm and spike were very important factors for improving the dry matter production of winter forage crops breeding and early maturing is also additively required under Korean climatic condition.

  • Paddy-upland rotation system is one of the important cropping system for improving soil quality and crop productivity. we conducted to investigate the effect of paddy-upland rotation system on soil properties and crop productivity in reclaimed tidal land. The paddy-upland rotation could be effective to conserve soil water contents and prevent from salt damage when cultivating upland crops. The first two years of maize cultivation after rice cultivation could be effective to secure stable production. However, in case of soybean crop, the rotation effect might be lower than that of maize. In the first year, the yield of soybean was 214 kg/10a. In the second and third year, the yields of soybean decreased consecutively to 152, 123 kg/10a respectively. In this paper, it would be suggested that maize be cultivated for up to two years and soybean be cultivated for one year after rice crop grown in reclaimed tidal land. This study could be provide basic data of the physico-chemical properties applicable to paddy-upland rotation system at reclaimed tidal lands.

  • The growth period and productivity of cropping system of winter wheat-rice, winter wheat-bean and winter wheat-grain corn for 4 years from 2015 to 2018 were compared at the experimental field of National Institute of Crop Science in Miryang city. The harvest period of winter wheat was in mid-June, and summer crops were sown (transplanted) in late June. In transplanting of rice in late June, there was no difficulty in securing the heading of panicle and the yield of rice, but there was a lot of trouble in sowing wheat in proper time because the harvest time of rice was delayed to early November due to late maturity of rice, particularly in the mid-late maturing cultivar. There was no problem in soybean planting after winter wheat because the proper period of soybean planting is late-June. In addition, there was no problem in winter wheat sowng after soybean because the maturity period of soybean was mid-October. Selection of grain maize in double cropping with winter wheat in terms of growing periods, was desirable because grain maize had the fastest maturity among summer crops. In double cropping of winter wheat-summer crops, wheats combined with soybean and grain maize showed stable yields during three years, but there was a risk of yield declines in the wheat combined with rice in heavy rainfall year. It was possible to secure high yields in three summer crops as yields of rice, soybean, and corn were 600, 350, and 800 kg/10a, respectively. Summer crops with medium maturity was recommended because of no significant difference in yield between medium maturity and medium-late maturity cultivar. Soil physical properties were improved in soils cultivated with soybean and grain maize. Therefore, It was thought that double cropping systems of winter wheat with soybean and grain maize were superior to that of winter wheat with rice in terms of connecting period between winter wheat - summer crops and improvement of soil physical properties, and total income, particularly in soybean.

  • Plant reproduction associated with crop yields is highly vulnerable to global climate change components such as high and cold temperatures. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of season-high exposure to temperature treatments in pollen morphology on Adzuki bean (V. angularis) and Mung bean (V. radiate). V. angularis and V. radiata were treated at high temperatures in the high temperature gradient greenhouse designed to cause temperature deviation. The pollen shapes treated at high temperature were compared by an electron scanning microscope. As a result, it was confirmed that the number of abnormal pollens morphology at high temperature was the least in V. radiata, and V. angularis was vulnerable to high temperatures. Also, it was found that the number of abnormal pollen morphology atT4 (Con +5~6℃) varied according to the cultivars of V. angularis. Therefore, the differences in Vigna species or cultivars with thermo-tolerance in pollen morphology to high temperature are projected to occur in the changeable future climate.

  • The objective of this study was to estimate corn and soybean yield in Illinois and Iowa in USA using satellite and meteorological data. MODIS products for NDVI were downloaded from a NASA website. Each layer was processed to convert projection and extract layers for NDVI. Relations of NDVI from 2002 to 2012 with corn and soybean yield were investigated to find informative days for rice yield estimation. Weather data for the county of study state duration from 2002 to 2012 to correlate crop yield. Multiple regression models based on MODIS NDVI and rainfall were made to estimate corn and soybean yields in study site. Corn yields estimated for 2013 were $10.17ton\;ha^{-1}$ in Illinois, $10.21ton\;ha^{-1}$ in Iowa and soybean yields estimated were $3.11ton\;ha^{-1}$ in Illinois, $2.58ton\;ha^{-1}$ in Iowa, respectively. Corn and Soybean yield distributions in 2013 were mapped to show spatial variability of crop yields of the Illinois and Iowa state.

  • A study has been made on the time of nitrogen top-dressing and the method of top-dressing to establish the higher yielding cultural method for wheat at Suwon. In this experiment, it was observed that the application of nitrogen top-dressing with urea leaf spray as spike fertilizer increased the yield by 4~6 percent over nitrogen top-dressing of equal quantity only. Considering the yield and various factors concerned, it is reasonable to apply top-dressing on mid and late of March in Suwon area.

  • Grain yields of errect-leaved corn hybrids were reported to be increased as planting density(PD) increased compared to those of horizontal leaf type hybrids. This trial was conducted to investigate the difference between errect and horizontal-leaved hybrids in response to different PD. Grain yields of both type hybrids were decreased at the highest PD, however, that of horizontal-leaved hybrid, Ga209 ${\times}$ Ki14A, was decreased more than errect-leaved hybrids which indicated varietal difference in response to PD. Responses to PD for days to tasseling, plant height, ear height, and leaf angle were not significant, also, PD ${\times}$ hybrid interactions were not observed. Yield components were decreased as PD increased and there were no PD ${\times}$ hybrid interactions for these characters. Leaf angle was negatively correlated with grain yield and yield components except for kernel weight.

  • A sweet sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] cultivar was planted on 9 and 30 June 2000 at plant densities of 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 plants $m^{-2}$ to determine the optimum plant density in Jeju region. There were no significant planting date x plant density interactions for most traits measured. Delaying planting from 9 to 30 June delayed 21 days in heading date, and significantly decreased plant height, the number of productive stems $m^{-2}$/, and lodging. Fresh stem yield tended to be higher at the 9 June planting date than at the 30 June planting date, but total sugar and ethanol yields were not significantly affected by planting date. Percentage of soluble solid was higher at the 30 June planting date compared with the 9 June planting date. Fresh stem, total sugar, and ethanol yields quadractically increased from 22.9 to 36.7 $t^{-1}$, from 1.66 to 2.54 $t^{-1}$, and from 945 to 1440 $L^{-1}$, respectively, with increasing plant density. The optimal plant densities for the maximum fresh stem, total sugar, and ethanol were estimated to be 10.7, 9.6, and 9.9 plants $m^{-2}$ respectively.

  • Competitive relationships between soybean cultivars and weeds were determined at different plant spacings and weed competition times. Soybean yields did not differ significantly between plant spacings. Annual weed competition more signficantly reduced yields and yield components of 'Williams' soybeans than those of 'Dongbuktae' and 'Suweon 83'. 'Suweon 83' and 'Dongbuktae' were more competitive to weeds than 'Williams'.
