The reliability of catenary system is very important for uninterrupted train operation as it supplies electric power to train without redundant facilities. This paper provides a systematic approach to the reliability analysis of the catenary system based on FMECA procedures defined by global standards such as MIL Std 1692a and IEC 60812. Field failure data collected from the operation and maintenance of high-speed railway catenary system for 9 years are used to derive critical failure modes and to evaluate the criticality of the failure modes. Evaluation of the criticality are carried out by quantitative procedures defined by MIL Std 1692a and by criticality matrix defined by IEC 60812. FMECA results suggests that three critical failure modes should be checked carefully during maintenance work, which include strand break of dropper and voltage equalizing wire, power supply failure of feeder. Maintenance procedure of catenary system in order of importance is suggested too. These results can be applied to maintenance planning and design of catenary system to improve the reliability of electric railway system.
The demands of IC card payment system has been increased according to the rapid advancement of the IT convergence application technologies. Recently IC card payment systems are in demands of the usage space at anytime and anywhere by developing the wireless communication technology and its related multimedia processing technology. Therefore the security of IC card payment system becomes more important and necessary. There are many fault analysis methods to evaluate the security and safety of information systems according to their characteristics and usages. However, the only assessment method to evaluate the security of information systems is not enough to analyse properly on account of the various types and characteristics of information systems by the progress of IT convergence and their applications. Therefore, this paper proposes an integrative method of the Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Fault Modes and Effect Analysis/Criticality (FMEA/C) based on criticality to evaluate and improve the security of IC card payment system as an illustration.

Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) is an extension of FMEA which includes a criticality analysis. The criticality analysis is used to chart the probability of failure modes against the severity of their consequences. The result highlights failure modes with relatively high probability and severity of consequences, allowing remedial effort to be directed where it will produce the greatest value. However, there are several limitations. Measuring severity of failure consequences is subjective and linguistic. Since The result of FMECA only gives qualitative and quantitative informations, it should be re-analysed to prioritize critical units. Fuzzy set theory has been introduced by Lotfi A. Zadeh (1965). It has extended the classical set theory dramatically. Based on fuzzy set theory, fuzzy logic has been developed employing human reasoning process. IF-THEN fuzzy rule based assessment approach can model the expert's decision logic appropriately. Fault tree analysis (FTA) is one of most common fault modeling techniques. It is widely used in many fields practically. In this paper, a simple fault tree analysis is proposed to measure the severity of components. Fuzzy rule based assessment method interprets linguistic variables for determination of critical unit priorities. An rail-way transforming system is analysed to describe the proposed method.

A subcritical facility must ensure nuclear criticality safety under all circumstances. For this purpose, it is essential to have a procedure to validate that calculated values do not exceed upper subcritical limit (USL), determined by quantifying the bias and uncertainty. However, there are several validation methodologies of nuclear criticality safety and these can yield different USL. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the validity of the methodologies to establish one methodology that can provide the most appropriate USL. In this study, two documents, a guide for validation of nuclear criticality safety calculational methodology (NUREG/CR-6698) and a criticality benchmark guide for light water reactor fuel in transport and storage package (NUREG/CR-6361), are compared and analyzed. In particular, the methodology in NUREG/CR-6361 is applied to the USLSTATS code. However, the analysis results show that the methodology in NUREG/CR-6698 is more appropriate, for several reasons. This is applied to decision of USL to design casks using SCALE code version 6.1.

A criticality safety analysis was performed for the APR-1400 spent fuel pool region-II to ensure the safe storage of spent fuel, with credit taken for depletion and in-rack neutron absorbers (Metamic panels). PLUS7 fuel assembly was modeled using TRITON-NEWT of SCALE-6.1. The burnup-dependent cross-section library was generated under limiting core-operating conditions with 5%-w U-235 initial enrichment. MCNP5 was used to evaluate the neutron multiplication factor in an infinite array of rack cells with the axially nonuniformly burnt PLUS7 assemblies under normal, abnormal, and accident conditions; including all biases and uncertainties. The main purpose of this study is to investigate reactivity variations due to the critical depletion and reactor operation parameters. The approach, assumptions, and modeling methods were verified by analyzing the contents of the most important fissile and the associated reactivity effects. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) guidance on k-eff being less than 1.0 for spent fuel pools filled with unborated water was the main criterion used in this study. It was found that assemblies with 49.0 GWd/MTU and 5.0 w/o U-235 initial enrichment loaded in Region-II satisfy this criterion. Moreover, it was found that the end effect resulted in a positive bias, thus ensuring its consideration.

This study aims to design ergonomic warning sound that is not confusing and enhancing preference. Four factors of the warning sound represented as interval, chord, reverberation and pitch were selected as independent variables. And, perceived urgency, perceived criticality, degree of confusion and user preference are measured as dependent variables. An experiment was conducted in silent lab environment. Warning sounds were given in 90dB constantly to subjects through stereo speakers. A statistical analysis revealed that interval was significant for perceived urgency; also interval and chord were both effective for perceived criticality. Pitch, interval, chord and the interaction between pitch and chord were effective in degree of confusion, so were reverberation, the interaction between reverberation and pitch and the interaction between reverberation and chord for preference. This study characterized the situation under which warning sounds are required into three types in terms of urgency and criticality; and found the right warning sound that the subjects perceived to best represent the situation through the validation study. These findings are expected to help the designer choose the right warning sound according to the situational contexts in which such warning sounds are implemented.

In general, conventional criticality analysis for spent fuel transport/storage systems have been performed based on the assumption of fresh fuel concerning the potential uncertainties from number density calculations of actinide nuclides and fission products in spent fuel. However, these evaluation methods cause financial losses due to an excessive criticality margin. In order to overcome this disadvantage, many studies have recently been conducted to design and commercialize a transportation and storage cask applied to the Burnup Credit (BUC). This study conducted an assessment to ensure criticality safety for reactor operating parameters, axial burn-up profiles and misload accident conditions, which are the factors that are likely to affect criticality safety when the BUC is applied to the dual-purpose cask under development at the KOrea RADioactive waste agency (KORAD). As a result, it was found that criticality resulting from specific power, changed substantially and relied on conditions of low enrichment and high burn-up. Considering the end effect in the case of high burn-up produced a positive-definite result. In particular, the increment of maximum effective multiplication factors due to misloading was 0.18467, confirming that misload is a factor that must be taken into account when applying the BUC. The results of this study may therefore be utilized as references in developing technologies to apply the BUC to domestic models and operational procedures or preventing any misload accidents during the process of spent fuel loading.
This study aims to present the sensitivity analysis approach for multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) method to reduce the uncertainty of weighting and performance values. This study focuses on two major problems of the uncertainty for MCDM method. The first major problem is how to determine the most critical criterion and the second is how to determine the most critical measure of performance. This study used the application of weighted sum method for water resources planning. The criticality degrees and the sensitivity coefficients of criterion and alternative are used. This results of sensitivity analysis can be applied to the general water resources planning in real.

In this study, reliability prediction of the ignition system of hybrid rocket is performed. The FMECA is preceded to the reliability prediction. To this end, the ignition system is divided into 5 components and 19 potential failure modes. The failure cause and effects are identified and criticality analysis is carried out for each failure mode, in which the criticality number is estimated using the failure rate databases. Among the numbers, the failure modes and components with higher criticality and severity are chosen and allocated with higher weighting factor. The reliability predictions are performed using the failure rate databases, from which the current ignition system is found to satisfy the target reliability.

Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) evaluates criticality and severity of each failure mode. Generally, those indices are determined subjectively by experts and operators. However, this process has no choice but to include uncertainty. In this paper, a method for eliciting expert opinions considering its uncertainty is proposed to evaluate the criticality and severity. In addition, a fuzzy expert system is constructed to determine the crisp value of risk level for each failure mode. The results are worth considering while deciding the proper policies for each component of the system.
