  • A critical angle method was used to measure the index of refraction of a solid medium when an air gap between the prism and the medium is present. The gap effect was analyzed both numerically and experimentally. Since the total internal reflection is severely disturbed by the large gap, determination of the critical angle and the resulting refractive index becomes ambiguous and inaccurate. By using an index matching fluid, we could determine the index of refraction with an uncertainty of ${\pm}2{\times}1^{-3}$ even when the gap is as large as 1 ${\mu}m$.

  • Purpose: This study is know the home care nursing specialists' copying method for life-threatening emergency situation occurred while changing the tracheotomy tube in the patient's home through case-based learning. Methods: Two cases were analyzed using structured critical reflection while changing the tracheal tube. In the first case, the patient presented with dyspnea, cyanosis, and low oxygen saturation when connected to home mechanical ventilator after replacement of the tracheotomy tube. In the second case, replacement of the tracheal tube was difficult due to a narrowed airway from proliferated granulation tissue. Results: From the case-based learning. using a critical reflection instrument, home care nursing specialists indicated that it was important to explain the possibility of danger to the client and that nurses must check the operation of the ambu-bag to prepare for an emergency when replacing a tracheotomy tube. Moreover, they stated a need for two nurses during client visits when there is the possibility of an emergency. Conclusion: Case-based learning through critical reflection provides actual practice-focused knowledge that is helpful to home care nurse specialists who face emergency situations in a restricted environment. Therefore, we hope that home care nursing specialists will use this method to strengthen their professional knowledge.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine what effect reflection on clinical practice experience had students as learners and care providers. Qualitative research method was used to study a group of four-year undergraduate nursing course. Content analysis was done using the classification method of Carper's four patterns of knowing. Results of the study indicated that the use of the reflective process of clinical debriefing and journaling was impact on the aspect of nursing science, moral component of knowledge in nursing, personal knowing in nursing and the art of nursing. Especially, students moved from a passive to a more active mode of learning. The most significant finding was that over time, reflective processes resulted in the emergence of the client as the central focus of care. It was suggested that reflection was an important learning tool in professional education and that the skills required for reflection need to be developed in professional courses.

  • Purpose: The purposes of study was to evaluate the effect of debriefing using reflection questions and writing on the critical thinking disposition, self-efficacy, and clinical judgement ability in simulation of post-operative care of abdominal surgery. Methods: The research method was a nonequivalent control group no-synchronized design. The study period was from August 22 to 30, 2016. The subjects were comprised of 34 people in the experimental group and 36 in the control group. In a simulation session for post-operative care of abdominal surgery, the treatment of the experimental group was to debrief for 30 minutes using Lasater's reflection questions and writing. For the control group, a typical debriefing was conducted in the same environment. Results: Critical thinking disposition, self-efficacy, and clinical judgement were significantly higher in the experimental group than the control group. Conclusion: To enhance the critical thinking disposition, self-efficacy, and clinical judgement of nursing students in simulation, it is recommended to debrief using reflection questions and writing.

  • This study explores the phenomenon of learner reflection in writing. Sixty-nine reflection logs were submitted by students after medical interview role plays. Using thematic analysis methodology, the following three steps were carried out: (1) the entire contents of the logs were analyzed and coded, (2) the coded contents were reclassified and categorized into higher themes, and (3) all reflection logs were re-analyzed to derive the frequency according to their classifications. The learners' reflection contents were classified into 'preparation,' 'experience,' and 'future plan.' The levels of reflection were 'simple information and appreciation,' 'acquisition and application of knowledge,' and 'analysis and criticism.' The types of reflection were identified only at the level of 'analysis and criticism' and could be classified into 'relativization,' 'objectification,' and 'internalization.' Students' reflection levels were highest in the levels of 'acquisition and application of knowledge' (49.3%), and 'analysis and criticism' (37.7%). A total of 14.5% of the students showed 'internalization.' In order to enable internalized reflection at a critical level, instructional strategies to induce and promote reflection are needed.

  • Service-Learning pedagogy includes community service and reflection as main components. Students can learn integration and application of knowledge beyond specific fields through experiences and reflection. The purpose of family and Consumer Sciences Education is related to connect theory and practice to improve individual, family, and community life. The curriculum focuses not only on content mastery in subjects, but also application of that knowledge to the real lives of students. Considering the purpose of service-learning as integration and application of knowledge, service- learning pedagogy can contribute to rethink family and Consumer Sciences Education. Reflection as a key component is examined for service-learning pedagogy. Exploring a deeper meaning of reflection in aspects of community connection, critical thinking, and transformative learning would extend the value of it and provide implications for implementing reflection in service-learning pedagogy in Family and Consumer Sciences Education.

  • In the precision measurement of the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) or reflection coefficient by means of the slotted line technique, one of the important factors is the maximum error due to the discontinuities and multi-reflection in the slotted line. Particularly, this error becomes a critical factor when the VSWR or the reflection coefficient to be measured is very small. In this paper, the exact expression of this error is obtained by means of the Signal flow graph method.

  • Purpose: To examine the applicability of a team-based learning using reflection journal in Women's Health Nursing for nursing students. Methods: This study had a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. Participants were 140 third-year undergraduate nursing students who agreed to participate in this study. The experimental group (n=70) received twice team-based learning using reflection journal about pregnancy nursing course while the control group (n=70) received only team-based learning. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, $x^2$ test, Fisher's exact test, and independent t-test using SPSS 23.0 program. Results: Compared to the control group, the experimental group reported significant positive changes in critical thinking (t=2.03, p=.044). Problem-solving, self-leadership, or academic self-efficacy of nursing college students was not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusion: Team-based learning using reflection journal is an effective teaching strategy to enhance critical thinking of nursing students.

  • As a fundamental approach to studying elastic wave behaviors in fiber-reinforced composites, this paper introduces the analytical method to predict the modes, directions, and amplitudes of all reflected waves that are generated by free-surface reflection in fiber-reinforced composites. The paper also explores a new phenomenon where a reflected wave that is predicted to exist in accordance with the slowness surface may disappear. This may occur when the angle of incidence of a quasi-shear wave exceeds a newly defined critical angle, named the third critical angle. It is hoped that the analytical approach introduced in this paper will provide an easy-to-follow guideline for researchers in the relevant area such as ultrasonic nondestructive testing.
