For large scale applications of high temperature superconductor(HTS) such as transmission cables, motors and generators, long length of flexible HTS conductors is required. Currently, HTS tape that is capable of being fabricated in long length by industrial processes is the Bi-2223 HTS tape. In this study, we fabricated 19 filamentary Bi-2223($Bi_{1.8}$$Pb_{0.4}$$Sr_{2}$$Ca_{2}$$Cu_{3}$$O_{10+X}$) HTS tape with 100m length by PIT(Powder In Tube) process. Critical current(Ic) of this long length tape was measured 18.5 A at 77 K, self field and short sample Ic is 32.5 A at the same condition. Critical current of 100m length tape was decreased by about 1/3 compared to that of short tape. This was mainly resulted from the increase of non homogeneity in oxide layer.
This paper presents a new systematic contingency selection, screening and ranking method for on-line transient security assessment. Transient stability of a particular generator is influenced most by fault near it. Fault at the transmission lines adjacent to the generators are selected as contingency. Two screening methods are developed using the sensitivity of modal synchronizing torque coefficient and computing an approximate critical clearing time(CCT) without time simulation. The first method, which considers only synchronizing power, may mislead in some cases since it does not consider the acceleration power. The approximate CCT method, which consider both the acceleration and deceleration power, worked well. Finally the Single Machine Equivalent(SIME) method is implemented using IPLAN of PSS/E for detailed stability analysis.
Researchers have applied theoretical and CFD models for years to analyze the fluidelastic instability (FEI) of tube arrays in steam generators and other heat exchangers. The accuracy of each approach has typically been evaluated using the discrepancy between the experimental critical flow velocity and the predicted value. In the best cases, the predicted critical flow velocity was within an order of magnitude comparable to the measured one. This paper revisits the quasi-steady approach for damping controlled FEI in a normal triangular array with a pitch ratio of P/d = 1.375. The method addresses the fluidelastic frequency at the stability threshold as an input parameter for the approach. The excellent agreement between the estimated stability thresholds and the equivalent experimental results suggests that the fluidelastic frequency must be included in the quasi-steady analysis, which requires minimal computing time and experimental data. In addition, the model allows a simple time delay analysis regarding flow convective and viscous effects.

Flow-Induced Vibration of steam generator tubes may result in fretting wear damage at the tube-to-support locations. KSNP(Korean Standard Nuclear Power plant) steam generators experienced fretting wear in the upper part of U-bend above the central cavity region of steam generators. This region has conditions susceptible to the flow-induced vibration, such as high flow velocity, high void fraction, and longer unsupported span. To improve its performance, APR1400 steam generator is designed with additional supports in this region to reduce unsupported span and to reduce peak velocity in the central cavity region. In this paper, we examined its performance improvement using ATHOS code. The thermal-hydraulic condition in the region of secondary side of APR1400 steam generator is obtained using the ATHOS3 code. The effective mass for modal analysis is calculated using the void fraction, enthalpy, and operating pressure information from ATHOS3 code result. With the effective mass distribution along the tube, natural frequency and mode shape is obtained using ANSYS code. Finally, stability ratios and real mean squared displacements for selected tubes of the APR1400 steam generator are computed. From these results, the current design of the APR1400 steam generator are examined.

Transient security assessment(TSA) is becoming an essential requirement not only for security monitoring but also for stabilizing control of power systems under new electricity environments. It has already been pointed out that fast transient stability study is an important part for monitoring and controlling system security. In this paper, we discuss an energy function method for stabilizing control of transiently unstable systems by introducing generator tripping system to enhance the transient stability of power systems. The stabilization with less tripped power can be obtained by tripping the generators faster than out-of-synchronism relay. Fast transient stability assessment based on the state estimation and direct transient energy function method is an important part of the stabilizing scheme. It is possible to stabilize the transiently unstable system by tripping less generators before the action of out-of-synchronism relay, especially when a group of generator are going to be out-of-synchronism. Moreover, the amount of generator output needed for tripping can be decided by Transient Energy Function(TEF) method. The main contribution of this paper is on the stabilizing scheme which can be running in the Wide Area Control System.
Fluid-elastic instability is believed to be a cause of the large-amplitude vibration and resulting rapid wear of heat exchanger tubes when the flow velocity exceeds a critical value. For sub-critical flow velocities, the random turbulence excitation is the main mechanism to be considered in predicting the long-term wear of steam generator tubes. Since flow-induced interactions of the tubes with tube supports in the sub-critical flow velocity can cause a localized tube wear, tube movement in the clearance between the tube and tube support as well as the normal contact force on the tubes by fluid should be maintained as low as possible. A simplified method is used for predicting fretting-wear damage of the double $90^{\circ}$U-bend tubes. The approach employed is based on the straight single-span tube analytical model proposed by Connors, the linear structural dynamic theory of Appendix N-1300 to ASME Section III and the Archard's equation for adhesive wear. Results from the presented method show a similar trend compared with the field data. This method can be utilized to predict the fretting-wear of the double $90^{\circ}$U-bend tubes in steam generators.

We present a method, supported by theoretical analysis, for optimizing the usage of the critical rare earth element dysprosium in $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ (NdFeB)-based permanent magnets. In this method, we use Dy selectively in locations such as magnet edges and faces, where demagnetization factors are largest, rather than uniformly throughout the bulk sample. A200 nm thick Dy film was sputtered onto a commercial N-38, NdFeB magnets with a thickness of 3 mm and post-annealed at temperatures from $600-700^{\circ}C$. Magnets displayed enhanced coercivities after post-annealing and as much as a 5 % increase in the energy product, while requiring a total Dy content of 0.06 wt. % - a small fraction of that used in the commercial grade Dy-NdFeB magnets. By assuming all Dy diffused into NdFeB magnets, the improvement in energy product corresponds to a saving of over 1% Dy (critical element). Magnets manufactured using this technique will therefore be higher performing which would potentially broaden the application space of these magnets in the traction motors of hybrid and pure electric vehicles, and wind generators.

SIME(SIngle Machine Equivalent) method has been recognized as a useful tool to determine transient stability of power systems. In this paper, SIME method is used to develop the KEPCO transient stability assessment (TSA) tool. A new screening algorithm that can be implemented in SIME method is proposed. The salient feature of the proposed screening algorithm is as follows. First, critical generators are identified by a new index in the early stage of the time domain simulation. Thus, computational time required to find OMIB(One Machine Infinite Bus) can be reduced significantly. Second, clustering critical machines can be performed even in very stable cases. It enables to be avoid extra calculation of time trajectory that is needed in SIME for classifying the stable cases. Finally, using power-angle trajectory and subdividing contingency classification have improved the screening capability. This algorithm is applied to the fast TSA of the KEPCO system.

Carbon costs, either in the form of a carbon tax or through permit prices in an emissions trading scheme, would ultimately be reflected in higher electricity prices. This price "pass-through" is very critical to the effective design of new policies to curb the amount of carbon emissions. This paper sets out in a structured way the factors that determine price pass-through and how carbon costs would impact on the electricity market and the existing coal-fired power plants. It is shown that pass-through can vary drastically if the underlying dispatch potential of generators varies significantly across alternative emissions reduction scenarios. It can also vary depending on the availability of competing cleaner forms of generation. Pass-through as a measure of business performance is therefore hard to generalize across different circumstances and should be interpreted carefully.

The mechanical integrity of generator stator windings is one of the critical point because the electric power is generated and conducted to power system through these windings. To cool down the heat emitted from generator winding during its operation, a majority of generators use de-mineralized water characterized by high cooling efficiency. Contrary to such the excellent cooling efficiency, however, the damaged bar insulations attributed to the absorption of cooling water in the generator stator winding lead to highly time- and cost consuming efforts as well as to service deterioration due to unexpected forced outage of generator. It is described that the new design of water absorption sensor using cross capacitance for generator in power plant in order to increase the reliability of water absorption diagnostics for generator stator bar insulation.
