The present study was undertaken to investigate the dry wear characteristics of die steel STD 11 for cold molding. The wear test was experimentally carried out under different conditions using a wear device, which was made in laboratory, and in which annular surfaces of wear testing specimens wear rubbed in dry sliding condition with varying the sliding speed, contact pressure, and sliding distance. The wear loss by variation of sliding speed was much in 0.3 m/sec and less in higher speed range above its sliding speed according to formation of the boundary lubrication film. The critical sliding speed with maximum value of the specific wear rate switched over to lower speed side according. as contact pressure increased. The critical sliding distance was increased with decrease in oxidation reaction velocity. The depth below subsurface showing maximum hardness (Hv) came out at the position, $60 \mu m$, of the maximum shear stress due to strain hardening.

Repeated sliding contact wear test was performed with copper specimens to obtain the relationship between wear and surface hardening. Wear surface and wear track section were observed by optical microscopy. Wear volume and micro-vikers hardness of sublayer below wear surface were obtained. These results suggested that wear mechanism depended on contact load than sliding velocity. Therefore wear mechanism was abrasive wear within critical contact load and adhesive wear over critical contact load. Wear rate increased with contact load, sliding distance but decreased with sliding velocity. Surface hardening increased with sliding velocity and sliding distance but decreased with contact load.

This paper is studied to know corrosive wear mechanism of STS304 steel on atmospherical temperature against mating material as the same. The corrosive test was carried out by rubbing the annular surface of two test pieces in distilled water and NaCl aqueous solution. The corrosive wear mechanism was investigated by S.E.M. The experimental results show that there is one Lcr transferring from severe wear to mild wear on change of NaCl concentration and atmospherical temperature, and which is the other still remaining in server wear state. It was found that the critical sliding distance Lcr shorten with increasing NaCl concentration but it is longer with ascending atmospherical temperature and the mild wear state still continues under the condition of high generation rate and elimination rate of the corrosive product. Considering upon the result, the model of corrosive wear mechanism is proposed.

In characterizing a suspension, heterogenety is included onto the previous characterization using solids concentrations and flocculent characteristics, because of its importance in hydrodynamics. The mechanism of interface formation during the sedimentation of concentrated suspension (thickening) is investigated from a microcosm consisting of four particles in a same plane and a smaller particle below. The critical distances after shich interface forms are calculated as a function of particle size ratio when the small particle is located in the middle of the squre datermined by the large particles. The results shows that the critical separation distance increase as the size ratio approaches to one (homogeneous suspension). This conforms to the trend of existing observations that homogeneous suspensions create the solid-liquid interface at much lower concentration (at al larger separation distance) that the heterogeneous suspensions.
This paper considers large deflection problem of a simply supported beam with variable are length subjected to a point load. The beam has one of its ends hinged and at a fixed distance from this end propped by a frictionless support over which the beam can slide freely. This highly nonlinear flexural problem is solved by elliptic-integral method and shooting-optimization technique, thereby providing independent checks on the new solutions. Because the beam can slide freely over the frictionless support, there is a maximum or critical load which the beam can carry and it is dependent on the position of the load. Interestingly, two possible equilibrium configurations can be obtained for a given load magnitude which is less than the critical value. The maximum arc-length was found to be equal to about 2.19 times the fixed distance between the supports and this value is independent of the load position.
Spectral diffusion following direct triplet excitation from the ground state in glassy Methylbenzophenone as a function of transition energy has been studied. The concentrations of donor and acceptor have been determined for different transition energies. The geometrical distribution was determined by a computer simulation. The cluster size increases gradually with concentration and cluster percolation is observed at 0.31 mole fraction for a three dimensional system. The average distance between a donor and an acceptor also has been determined for different concentrations. The energy transfer efficiency changes abruptly at a critical concentration of 0.054, corresponding to a critical distance of 9.8 Å. The γvalue was evaluated to be 1.17.

In this paper, thermal sensitivity of the solid fuel grain in the hybrid rocket motor was investigated. When the heat from the non-reacting hot flow passing the grain ports is transferred to the solid fuel grain, the temperature fields in the solid fuel was numerically analyzed. These numerical analyzes were performed under the different nine port radii, and the critical distance between the ports in which the temperature in the solid fuel is sensibly responding was determined. Thus, the critical distance between the ports would be the important consideration for the design of the fuel grain because the high temperature in the fuel can bring the structural problems.

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the interaction phenomena of droplet array combustion in ambient environment. The droplet with 1 mm in diameter was supported from an optical fiber and ignited with a hot wire. Combustion lifetimes and burning rate constants were measured for fuel of nheptane according to parameters, which were junction and suspender spacings, and array configuration. Results show that the burning process considerably depends on the initial away configuration. The d$^2$-law is found to be correct when applied to both of the droplets in away and the single droplet. For separation distance of about 5mm, there exists a critical state. So the transition from a merged flame to separated flames occurs and burning velocity is much faster than before. Combustion lifetime of the lower droplet is shorter than that of the upper droplet in the two-dimensional arrays combustion. Burning rate constants of the droplets in arrays are smaller than that of the single droplet, while they become higher as separation distance increases. Combustion lifetimes of the droplets in arrays are longer than that of the single droplet and decrease as separation distance increase. It is concluded that the array configuration and the mergedness of the flame are the most important factors governing multi-droplet combustion.

The passive control methods such as horizontal and vertical fences on the lower surface of the bluff body were applied to suppress the vortex shedding and enhance the aerodynamic stability of flow. For investigating the effects of the passive control methods, wind tunnel experiments on the unsteady flow field around a bluff body near a moving ground were performed. The boundary layer and velocity profiles were measured by the Hot Wire Anemometer (HWA) system and the vortex shedding patterns and flow structures in a wake region were visualized via the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system. Also, it is a measuring on moving ground condition that the experimental values of the critical gap distances, Strouhal numbers and aerodynamic force FFT analyses. Through the experiments, we found that the momentum supply due to moving ground caused the vortex shedding at the lower critical gap distance rather than that of fixed ground. The horizontal and vertical fences increase the critical gap distance and it can suppress the vortex shedding. Consequently, the stability characteristics of the bluff body near a moving ground could be effectively enhanced by the simple passive control such as the vertical fences.

Vector data compression algorithm can meet requirements of different levels and scales by reducing the data amount of vector graphics, so as to reduce the transmission, processing time and storage overhead of data. In view of the fact that large threshold leading to comparatively large error in Douglas-Peucker vector data compression algorithm, which has difficulty in maintaining the uncertainty of shape features and threshold selection, a segmented Douglas-Peucker algorithm based on node importance is proposed. Firstly, the algorithm uses the vertical chord ratio as the main feature to detect and extract the critical points with large contribution to the shape of the curve, so as to ensure its basic shape. Then, combined with the radial distance constraint, it selects the maximum point as the critical point, and introduces the threshold related to the scale to merge and adjust the critical points, so as to realize local feature extraction between two critical points to meet the requirements in accuracy. Finally, through a large number of different vector data sets, the improved algorithm is analyzed and evaluated from qualitative and quantitative aspects. Experimental results indicate that the improved vector data compression algorithm is better than Douglas-Peucker algorithm in shape retention, compression error, results simplification and time efficiency.
