  • A set of standard triaxial testing was performed to identify underlying physical processes and inherent limitations in the determination of critical state parameters in sandy soils. The experimental test results showed that the critical state friction angle for a given soil is constant regardless of drainage condition while the critical state line on the e-log p'space is significantly affected by drainage condition mainly because of insufficient strain attained in standard triaxial tests and strain localization effects in udrained tests. It appeared that the best method to determine critical state parameters in laboratory testing is to use homogeneous loose specimens under drained shear condition. In addition, a reference state parameter was suggested to design tests that will avoid dilatancy or strain localization effects in drained tests.

  • This paper presents a high performance and cost effective way by using an FPGA circuit to implement torque controller so that the SRM can operate at high speed. In order to increase the operating speed, we need to implement both the torque and the current controllers by using an FPGA. However, it is difficult to implement all of the torque controller in the FPGA. Moreover, implementation of a time critical part is sufficient for improving the performance. One of the time critical part is the switching angle control. In this study, torque controller which calculate the switching on and commutation angles is implemented in PC because these angle are a function of rotor velocity which is varied slowly, and switching angle controller ...

  • This paper deals with nonlinear asymmetric dynamic buckling of clamped laminated angle-ply composite spherical shells under suddenly applied pressure loads. The formulation is based on first-order shear deformation theory and Lagrange's equation of motion. The nonlinearity due to finite deformation of the shell considering von Karman's assumptions is included in the formulation. The buckling loads are obtained through dynamic response history using Newmark's numerical integration scheme coupled with a Newton-Raphson iteration technique. An axisymmetric curved shell element is used to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the spherical caps. The pressure value beyond which the maximum average displacement response shows significant growth rate in the time history of the shell structure is considered as critical dynamic load. Detailed numerical results are presented to highlight the influence of ply-angle, shell geometric parameter and asymmetric mode on the critical load of spherical caps.

  • The intermediate range of temperatures($100{\sim}300^{\circ}C$) which can be achieved with CPCs(Compound Parabolic Concentrators) without tracking device provides both economic and thermal advantages for solar collector design. The present paper summarizes critical design considerations for CPC with cylindrical absorber and its optical performance using ray tracing program. Concentration ratios vary as acceptance half angle, ratio of reflector height to aperture width and ratio of reflector area to aperture area. This effects showed that the concentration ratio was increased as acceptance angle but optimum ratio of reflector height to aperture width existed at critical value. As a result of ray tracing, solar ray losses was maximized at acceptance half angle and this problem was solved by increasing absorber tube diameter. The concentrating flux distribution on the absorber surface was uniform but peak flux existed.

  • Cracks in mechanical joints is generally under mixed-mode and there is the critical inclined angle at which mode I stress intensity factor becomes maximum. In order to evaluate the fatigue life of cracks in mechanical joints, horizontal crack normal to the applied load and located on minimum cross section is major concern but critical inclined crack must also be considered. In this paper mixed-mode fatigue crack growth test is performed for horizontal crack and critical inclined crack in mechanical joints. Fatigue crack growth path is predicted by maximum tangential stress criterion using mode I and mode II stress intensity factors obtained from weight function method, and fatigue crack growth rates of horizontal and inclined crack are compared.

  • In this research, the effects of fiber stacking sequence on damage behaviors of FML(Fiber Metal Laminates) subject to indentation loading. SOP (Singly Oriented Ply) FML and angle ply FML were fabricated to study fiber orientation effects and angle ply effects. FML were fabricated by using 1050 aluminum laminate and carbon/epoxy prepreg. To increase adhesive bonding strength, Al laminate was etched using FPL methods. The static indentation test were conducted by using UTM under the 2side clamped conditions. During the tests, load and displacement curve and crack initiation and propagation behaviors were investigated. As fiber orientation angle increases, the crack initiation load of SOP FML increases because the stiffness induced by fiber orientation is increased. The penetration load of SOP FML is influenced by the deformation tendency and boundary conditions. However, the macro-crack of angle ply FML was initiated by fiber breakage of lower ply because angle plies in Angle ply FML prevents the crack growth and consolidation. The Angle ply FML has a critical cross-angle which prevent crack growth and consolidation. Damage behavior of Angle ply FML is changed around the critical cross-angle.

  • When high temperature superconducting(HTS) tapes are wound on former for HTS cable application, their critical characteristics are likely to be degraded seriously because of mechanical stress. In this study, prior to fabricate prototype HTS cables, we investigated the variation of critical characteristics of HTS tapes according to their pitch angles. For this work, we prepared the samples of HTS tapes on the former of which diameter is 3cm. Pitch angles of HTS tapes are $0^{\circ}$, $00^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $40^{\circ}$, respectively. We applied current up to 160 $A_{rms}$ to HTS tapes and investigated E-I characteristics. The critical current of HTS tapes was decreased as pitch angle increased. In addition, when the applied current was beyond their critical current, the rate of resistance increase of HTS tapes was in proportion to their critical current. Finally, We concluded that the pitch angles affected resistance increase of HTS tapes as well as critical current.

  • Critical speed of high thrust liquid rocket engine turbopump is obtained through a rotordynamic analysis and a unloaded turbopump test is peformed for validation of the numerical model. The first critical speed predicted by the numerical analysis is correlated well with the test result for the bearing unloaded rotor condition only considering mass unbalance load. Using the previous rotordynamic model, critical speed variation is estimated as a function of varied bearing stiffness due to pump and turbine radial loads with relative angle difference. From the numerical analysis, it is found that the relative angle difference of pump and turbine radial loads greatly affects the critical speed. However, additional axial load reduces the effect derived from the relative angle difference of radial loads.
