Anodic TiO2 nanostructures have wide applications due to their various functional properties such as wide band-gap, chemical stability, and anti-corrosiveness. In order to enhance the properties, several approaches to fabricate TiO2 structures have been developed. Especially, TiO2 nanotube arrays prepared by anodization in a fluoride electrolyte show impressive properties for dye sensitized solar cells1 and photocatalyst. In this presentation, we introduce new types of TiO2 nanostructures beyond TiO2 nanotubes that are fabricated by anodization at high temperature in a glycerol/phosphate electrolyte. We show that depending on the anodization parameters different self-organized morphologies - of highly aligned, high aspect ratio oxide structures can be formed. Critical factor for growth and the use for dye sensitized solar cells and photocatalyst will be discussed.
The effectiveness of buffer cache replacement algorithms is critical to the performance of I/O systems. In this paper, we propose the degree of inter-reference gap (DIG) based block replacement scheme that retains merits of the least recently used (LRU) such as simple implementation and good cache hit ratio (CHR) for general patterns of references, and improves CHR further. In the proposed scheme, cache blocks with low DIGs are distinguished from blocks with high DIGs and the replacement block is selected among high DIGs blocks as done in the low inter-reference recency set (LIRS) scheme. Thus, by having the effect of the partitioning the cache memory dynamically based on DIGs, CHR is improved. Trace-driven simulation is employed to verified the superiority of the DIG based scheme and shows that the performance improves up to about 175% compared to the LRU scheme and 3% compared to the LIRS scheme for the same traces.
The flow characteristics around an elliptic cylinder with axis ratio of AR=2 located near a flat plate were investigated experimentally to study the interaction between the cylinder wake and the turbulent boundary layer. The pressure distributions on the cylinder surface and on the flat plate were measured with varying the angle of attack of the cylinder. In addition, the velocity profiles of wake behind the cylinder were measured using a hot-wire anemometry As the angle of attack increases, the location of peak pressure on the windward and leeward surfaces of the cylinder moves toward the rear and front of the cylinder, respectively. At positive angles of attack, the position of the minimum pressure on the flat plate surface is moved downstream, but it is moved upstream at negative angles of attack. With increasing the angle of attack, the vortex shedding frequency is gradually decreased and the critical angel of attack exists in terms of the gap ratio. By installing the elliptic cylinder at negative angle of attack, the turbulent boundary layer over the flat plate is disturbed more than that at positive incidence. This may be attributed to the shift of separation point on the lower surface of the cylinder according to the direction of the angle of attack.

This paper investigates the noise radiated by a cascade of flat-plate airfoils interacting with homogeneous, isotropic turbulence. At frequencies above the critical frequency, all wavenumber components of turbulence excite propagating cascade modes, and cascade effects are shown to be relatively weak. In this frequency range, acoustic power was shown to be approximately proportional to the number of blades. Based on this finding at high frequencies, an approximate expression is derived for the power spectrum that is valid above the critical frequency and which is in excellent agreement with the exact expression for the broadband power spectrum. The approximate expression shows explicitly that the acoustic Power above the critical frequency is proportional to the blade number, independent of the solidity, and varies with frequency as ${\phi}_{ww}(\omega/W$), where ${\phi}_{ww}$ is the wavenumber spectrum of the turbulence velocity and W is mean-flow speed. The formulation is used to perform a parametric study on the effects on the power spectrum of the blade number stagger angle, gap-chord ratio and Mach number. The theory is also shown to provide a close fit to the measured spectrum of rotor-stator interaction when the mean square turbulence velocity and length-scale are chosen appropriately.

Considerable attention has been focused on the applications of flexible liquid crystal (LC)-based displays because of their many potential advantages, such as portability, durability, light weight, thin packaging, flexibility, and low power consumption. To develop flexible LCDs that are capable of delivering high-quality moving images, like conventional glass-substrate LCDs, the LC device structure must have a stable alignment layer of LC molecules, concurrently support uniform cell gaps, and tightly bind two flexible substrates under external tension. However, stable LC molecular alignment has not been achieved because of the layerless LC alignment, and consequently high-quality images cannot be guaranteed. To solve these critical problems, we have proposed a PDMS pixel-wall based bonding method via the IB irradiation was developed for fasten the two substrates together strongly and maintain uniform cell gaps. The effect of the IB irradiation on PDMS with PI surface was also evaluated by side structure configuration and a result of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis of PDMS interlayer as a function of binder with substrates. large number of PDMS pixel-walls are tightly fastened to the surface of each flexible substrate and could maintain a constant cell gap between the LC molecules without using any other epoxy or polymer. To enhance the electro-optical performance of the LC device, we applied an alignment method that creates pretilt angle on the PI surface via ion beam irradiation. Using this approach, our flexible LCDs have a contrast ratio of 132:1 and a response time of about 15 ms, resulting in highly reliable electro-optical performance in the bent state, comparable to that of glass-substrate LCDs.

Hollow fiber (HF) membranes are gaining wide interest over flat membranes due to their compaction and high area to surface volume ratio. This work addresses the fabrication of HF from polysulfone (PS) and polyethersulfone (PES) using N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent in addition to other additives to achieve desired characteristics. The semi-pilot spinning system includes jacketed vessel, four spinneret block, coagulation and washing baths in addition to dryer and winder. Different parameters affecting dry-wet spinning phase inversion process were investigated. Dope compositions of PES, NMP and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) of varying molecular weights as additive were addressed. Some critical parameters of importance were also investigated. Those include dope flow rate, air gap, coagulation & washing baths and drying temperatures. The measured dope viscosity was in the range from 1.7 to 36.5 Pa.s. Air gap distance was adjusted from 20 to 45 cm and coagulation bath temperature from 20 to $46^{\circ}C$. The HF membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and mechanical properties. Results indicated prevalence of finger like structure and average surface roughness from about 29 to 78.3 nm. Profile of stress strain characteristics revealed suitability of the fibers for downstream interventions for fabrication of thin film composite membrane. Different empirical correlations were formulated which enable deeper understanding of the interaction of the above mentioned variables. Data of pure water permeability (PWP) confirmed that the fabricated samples fall within the microfiltration (MF)-ultrafiltration (UF) range of membrane separation.
This paper presents a novel z-axis accelerometer with perfectly aligned vertical combs fabricated using the extended sacrificial bulk micromachining (extended SBM) process. The z-axis accelerometer is fabricated using only one (111) SOI wafer and two photo masks without wafer bonding or CMP processes as used by other research efforts that involve vertical combs. In our process, there is no misalignment in lateral gap between the upper and lower comb electrodes, because all critical dimensions including lateral gaps are defined using only one mask. The fabricated accelerometer has the structure thickness of $30{\mu}m$, the vertical offset of $12{\mu}m$, and lateral gap between electrodes of $4{\mu}m$. Torsional springs and asymmetric proof mass produce a vertical displacement when an external z-axis acceleration is applied, and capacitance change due to the vertical displacement of the comb is detected by charge-to-voltage converter. The signal-to-noise ratio of the modulated and demodulated output signal is 80 dB and 76.5 dB, respectively. The noise equivalent input acceleration resolution of the modulated and demodulated output signal is calculated to be $500{\mu}g$ and $748{\mu}g$. The scale factor and linearity of the accelerometer are measured to be 1.1 mV/g and 1.18% FSO, respectively.

Leakage inductance and temperature rise are two of the more impotent problems facing the magnetic core technology of today's high frequency transformers. Excessive leakage inductance increases the stress on the switching transistors and limits the duty-cycle, and excessive temperature rise can lead the design limitation of high frequency transformer with high current. The flat transformer technology provides a very good solution to the problems of leakage inductance and thermal management for high frequency power. The critical magnetic components and windings are optimized and packaged within a completely assembled module. The turns ratio in a flat transformer is determined as the product of the number of elements or modules times the number of primary turns. The leakage inductance increase proportionately to the number of elements, but since it is reduced as the square of the turns, the net reduction can be very significant. The flat transformer modules use cores which have no gap. This eliminates fringing fluxes and stray flux outside of the core. The secondary windings are formed of flat metal and are bonded to the inside surface of the core. The secondary winding thus surrounds the primary winding, so nearly all of the flux is captured.
Seismic isolation is often used in protecting mission-critical structures including hospitals, data centers, telecommunication buildings, etc. Such structures typically house vibration-sensitive equipment which has to provide continued service but may fail in case sustained accelerations during earthquakes exceed threshold limit values. Thus, peak floor acceleration is one of the two main parameters that control the design of such structures while the other one is peak base displacement since the overall safety of the structure depends on the safety of the isolation system. And in case peak base displacement exceeds the design base displacement during an earthquake, rupture and/or buckling of isolators as well as bumping against stops around the seismic gap may occur. Therefore, obtaining accurate peak floor accelerations and peak base displacement is vital. However, although nominal design values for isolation system and superstructure parameters are calculated in order to meet target peak design base displacement and peak floor accelerations, their actual values may potentially deviate from these nominal design values. In this study, the sensitivity of the seismic performance of structures equipped with linear and nonlinear seismic isolation systems to the aforementioned potential deviations is assessed in the context of a benchmark shear building under different earthquake records with near-fault and far-fault characteristics. The results put forth the degree of sensitivity of peak top floor acceleration and peak base displacement to superstructure parameters including mass, stiffness, and damping and isolation system parameters including stiffness, damping, yield strength, yield displacement, and post-yield to pre-yield stiffness ratio.
