  • Recently small punch creep testing (or miniature disc bend creep test) has received much attention through European collaborative research projects. This method was considered as a substitute for the conventional creep rupture testing by which the residual creep life is measured from the specimen taken out from serviced components of high temperature plants. It would be beneficial if the material creep properties such as power law creep constants as well as the creep rupture life can be measured from the small punch creep test. In this paper a method of assessing creep constants from the small punch creep testing is proposed. Finite element analyses were performed to investigate evolution of stress and strain rate at the weakest locations of the small punch creep specimen. Elastic-plastic-secondary creep analyses were carried out. The estimation equations for creep constants by the small punch creep testing are proposed based on the finite analysis results. Small punch creep tests were also performed with 9Cr steel and the accuracy of the proposed equation was verified by the experimental results.

  • Magnesium alloys have been focussed for the applications for lightweight of vehicle and electronics due to their high strength, low specific density and good damping capacity. This paper deals with the creep strength of Mg-Nd-Zr-Zn alloy. For the alloy, pure magnesium(99.9%) was melt with atmosphere of $0.3%SF_6$ and $25%CO_2$. After melting, 0.3% of zinc was inserted to stir for 10min at elevated temperature of $770^{\circ}C$. Master alloys of Mg-15%Nd and Mg-15%Zr were stirred in furnace. The creep tests were performed to obtain creep rate and rupture in the temperature range of 200 to $220^{\circ}C$ and 280 to $310^{\circ}C$ at an applied stress of 156 to 172MPa and 78 to 94MPa, respectively. The deformation mechanism was predicted dislocation climb from measured apparent activation energy and stress exponent. Also the increaser the temperature and stress the lower the stress exponent and activation energy. Finally, LMP parameter gives good information for the predicted creep rupture life.

  • Creep failure of 316LN stainless steel (SS) occurs due to the nucleation and growth of cracks. An investigation was performed to correlate the creep damage with ultrasonic wave speeds and angular frequencies using creep-tested 316LN SS specimens. Ultrasonic wave measurements were made in the direction of and perpendicular to the loading using contact probes with central frequencies of 10, 15, and 20 MHz. We found that the angular frequency and wave speed decreased with increasing creep time to rupture by analyzing the ultrasonic signals from the 15 and 20 MHz probes. Therefore, the creep damage was sensitive to the angular frequency and wave speed of ultrasonic waves.

  • To make practical applications of Al-Zn-Mg ternary aluminum alloy effectively in various field, a series of static creep tests under the 16 temperature-stress combination conditions had been performed. The creep tester with constant stress loading was designed and made by the authors and used in this study. The higher the creep temperature rose, the less the stress exponents became. The bigger the applied stresses became, the less values the creep strain activation energy showed. The life prediction constant of Larson-Miller parameter was calculated as about 2.3. In the fractography, the ductile fracture with dimples by intergranular breakage was primarily observed. We can make practical use of these test data in the design, the life prediction and the prevention of the accidents of the thermal facilities, etc.

  • Technological mode progress demands the use of materials at high temperature and pressure. Constant load creep tests have been carried out over the range of stresses at high temperatures. One of the most critical factors in considering such applications as the most critical one is the creep behavior. In order to investigate the creep behavior in this study, the stress exponents during creep were determined over the temperature range of $275^{\circ}C$ to $325^{\circ}C$ and the stress range of 36MPa to 72MPa. The applicability of modified Monkman-Grant relationship was also discussed.

  • Weld repair of ASTM A-470 class 8 high pressure (HP) steam turbine rotor steel has been performed to extend the service life of older fossil units. Microhardness measurements were conducted across the weldment from unaffected base metal (BM) to weld metal (WM). The hardness of the BM was VHN 253, however it dropped up to VHN 227 at the heat affected zone (HAZ) close to unaffected BM for multipass SAW. This area of hardness drop is called "siftening zone" and has a width of 0.5-0.6mm. During creep rupture test, failure occurred around the softening zone and rupture time was 772.4hr at 19Ksi (132 Mpa) and 593.deg. C. Multipass MIG and TIG welding have been employed to reduce the softening zone width. The softening zone width for MIG was 0.3-0.4mm and for TIG was zero-0.4mm depending on heat inputs. However creep rupture time was decreased as softening zone width reduced. Creep rupture time also showed a close relationship with heat inputs in TIG process. The higher heat input, the longer rupture time. Most failure occurred at intercritical HAZ (ICHAZ), however rupture location was shifted to coarse grained HAZ (CGHAZ) as heat input decreased. The rupture surface showed tearing and dimple which indicated transgranular fracture. fracture.

  • High-temperature rupture behavior of 5083-Al alloy was tested for failure at 548K under multiaxial stress conditions: uniaxial tension using smooth bar specimens, biaxial shearing using double shear bar specimens, and triaxial tension using notched bar specimens. Rupture times were compared for uniaxial, biaxial, and triaxial stress conditions with respect to the maximum principal stress, the von Mises effective stress, and the principal facet stress. The results indicate that the von Mises effective and principal facet stresses give good correlation for the material investigated, and these parameters can predict creep life data under the multiaxial stress states with the rupture data obtained from specimens under the uniaxial stress. The results suggest that the creep rupture of this alloy under the testing condition is controlled by cavitation coupled with highly localized deformation process, such as grain boundary sliding. It is also conceivable that strain softening controls the highly localized deformation modes which result in cavitation damage in controlling rupture time of this alloy.

  • High temperature materials in service are subjected to mechanical damage due to operating load and metallurgical damage due to operating temperature. Therefore, when designing or assessing life of high temperature components, both factors must be considered. In this paper, the effect of tensile hold time on high temperature fatigue crack growth and long term prior thermal aging heat treatment on creep rupture behavior were investigated using STS 316L and STS 316 austenitic stainless steels, which are widely used for high temperature components like in automotive exhaust and piping systems. In high temperature fatigue crack growth tests using STS 316L, as tensile hold time increased, crack growth rate decreased in relatively short tensile hold time region. In long term aged specimens, cavity type microcracks have been observed at the interface of grain boundary and coarsened carbide.

  • Steady-state creep analysis of power generation turbine blade is carried out considering thermal loads and centrifugal forces. Creep strains and stresses of the turbine blade are calculated for 3-D finite clement model of the turbine blade. From the numerical results, creep life of the turbine blade is predicted. The results of creep analysis during about 200 hours indicate that creep strains of the turbine blade do not reach the rupture strain of GTD111. Creep stresses of the turbine blade are relaxed as time increases. Maximum creep strain occurs at the tip section of the airfoil pressure surface. The maximum creep strain of the turbine blade is expected close to the rupture strain after 50,000 hours approximately. The turbine blade may not have creep damage for the starting procedure of the turbine.
