  • In this study, the theory of spherical indentation based on incremental plasticity is extended to an indentation method for evaluating creep properties. Through finite element analysis (FEA), the point where the elastic strain effect is negligible and the creep strain gradient constant is taken as the optimum point for obtaining the equivalent strain rate and stress. Based on FE results for spherical indentation with various values of creep exponent and creep coefficient, we derive by regression an equation to calculate creep properties using two normalized variables. Finally a program is generated to calculate creep exponent and creep coefficient. With this method, we obtain from the load-depth curve creep exponents with an average error of less than 1.5 % and creep coefficients with an average error of less than 1.0 %.

  • This research is focused on the inducement of the constitutive equation considering the creep strain component and on the development of a finite element method program. The purpose of this research was to contribute to the design of construction structures or to the construction management in soft clay ground through predicting the long-term strain of construction structures reasonably bused on the above program. Modified Cam Clay model was adopted to describe the elastic-plastic behavior of clayey soil. And in the calculation of the creep sprain, the secondary coefficient of consolidation C. was applied for considering the volumetric creep element and the constants m, $\alpha$, A were rosed by the empirical creep equation proposed by Singh 8E Mitchell for considering the deviatoric creep element. To examine the reliability of the program which is developed in this study, the estimated values by this program were compared with the theoretical solution and the experimental results. And the applicability of the developed program was found to be reliable from the sensitive analysis of each parameters used in this study. According to the results obtained from the application of the program on the field measurement data, the estimated values by the program were found with be consistent with the actual values. And from the analysis of the displacement of embankments, the case of considering the creep behavior induced much fower errors than the case of neglecting it. But the results obtained from considering the volumetric creep behavior only were slightly underestimated the results from considering the deviator creep behavior showed the slightly overestimated values. Therefore, it remains the task of further studios to develop the laboratory test devices to obtain the reliable creep parameters, and to select the appropriate soil parameters, etc.

  • In this study, a small punch creep(SP-Creep) test using miniaturized specimen(10${\times}$10${\times}$0.5mm) is described to develop the new creep test method for high temperature structural materials. The SP-Creep test is applied to 2.25Cr-lMo(STBA24) steel which is widely used as boiler tube material. The test temperatures applied for the creep deformation of miniaturized specimens are between 550∼600$^{\circ}C$. The SP-Creep curves depend definitely on applied load and creep temperature, and show the three stages of creep behavior like in conventional uniaxial tensile creep curves. The load exponent of miniaturized specimen decreases with increasing test temperature, and its behavior is similar to stress exponent behavior of uniaxial creep test. The creep activation energy obtained from the relationship between SP-Creep rate and test temperature decreases as the applied load increases. A predicting equation or SP-Creep rate for 2.25Cr-lMo steel is suggested. and a good agreement between experimental and calculated data has been found.

  • Zr-4 used for a cladding and an end plug of reactor component has creep deformation under operation at high temperature. Creep is regarded as the time dependent deformation of a material under constant applied stress. Although the major source of the deformation of zirconium component in water-cooled reactors is irradiation creep, the thermal creep may give a rise to significant deformation in reactor component especially at relatively high temperatures and at various constant stresses, and therefore it must be predicted accurately. Stress relaxation is the time dependent change of stress at constant strain and it is a process related intimately to creep. In this paper, the creep behavior and stress relaxation of Zr-4 is examined at the temperature of 50$0^{\circ}C$ that is 40% of the absolute melting temperature of Zr-4 under the stress below yield stress and under the various constant strains. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1) With an increase of stress, the steady state creep rate increases and the creep rupture time decreases. 2) The steady state creep rate $\varepsilon$(%/s) for the stress $\sigma$sub(c) (kgf/mm super(2)) of Zr-4 increases outstandingly. All the empirical equations computed for Zr-4 increases outstandingly. All the empirical equations computed for Zr-4 are in accord with Norton's model equation($\varepsilon$=K$\sigma$ sub(c) super (n)). The constants of materials computed are as follows: K=3.9881$\times$10 super(-5), n=1.9608 3) The rupture time T sub(r) (hr) decreases linearly with the increase of stress on the log-log scaled graph. The empirical equations computed for Zr-4 are in accord with Bailey's model equation (T sub(r)=K sub(1)$\sigma$sub(c) super(m)). The constants of materials computed are as follows: K sub(1)=1.2875$\times$10 super(16), m=-3.467 4) It seems clear that the strain could be quantitatively dependent on the high temperature creep properties such as creep stress, rupture time, steady state creep rate and total creep rate. It is found that these relationships are linear on the log-log graph. 5) In stress relaxation test, as the critical constant strain that can be allowed to the specimen is larger, stress relaxation becomes more rapid, and as the constant strain is smaller, the stress relaxation becomes slower.

  • It is difficult to analyze and predict the long-term behavior of concrete structures and members under multiaxial stresses because most of existing researches on creep of concrete were mainly concerned about uniaxial stress state. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is the investigation of creep properties of concrete under multiaxial stresses. This paper presents experimental study on creep of concrete under multiaxial compression. Twenty seven cubic specimens($20{\times}20{\times}20 cm$) for three concrete mixes were tested under uniaxial, biaxial, and triaxial stress states. Creep strains were measured in three directions of principal stresses. Poisson's ratio at the initial loading was obtained, as was Poisson's ratio due to creep stain and Poisson's ratio due to the combined creep strain and elastic strain. These Poisson's ratios were approximately equal for each concrete mix. The Poisson's ratio at the initial loading and the Poisson's ratio for the combined strain Increased slightly as the strength of the concrete increased. In addition, the volumetric creep strain and deviatoric creep strain were linearly proportional to volumetric stress and deviatoric stress, respectively.

  • The mechanical and rheological properties of agricultural materials which influence the machine design or handling are not completely understood. Agricultural materials do not react in a purely elastic manner, and their responses when subjected to stress and strain appear a combination of elastic and viscous behavior. Many researchers have studied the mechanical and rheological properties of the various agricultural materials, but those properties are available mostly for foreign varieties of agricultural products. Rheological properties of rice seedlings become important to formulate the principles governing their mechanical behavior. The objectives of this study were to experimentally determine the creep and recovery behavior of rice seedlings of one japonica-type and one Indica x japonica hybrid in the transplanting age. The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1. The compression creep and recovery behavior of mat-type seedlings could be described by 4-element Burger's model. 2. The steady-state creep appeared at the stress larger than 0.8 MPa and the logarithmic creep appeared at the stress smaller than 0.8 MPa. 3. In the compression creep test of the rice seedlings, the instantaneous elastic modulus of Burger's model showed the range from 20 to 40 MPa. The higher value of absolute viscosity for the rice seedling explained that the rice seedlings were viscoelastic materials. 4. In the recovery test of the rice seedlings, there was a tendency that the higher permanent strain of all samples was observed under the smaller stress being appeared, and the larger permanent strain in Dongjin was observed than in Samkang.

  • This paper investigates creep analysis of a plate made of Al-SiC functionally graded material using Mendelson's method of successive elastic solution. All mechanical and thermal material properties, except Poisson's ratio, are assumed to be variable along the thickness direction based on the volume fraction of reinforcement and thickness. First, the basic relations of the plate are derived using the Love-Kirchhoff plate theory. The solution of governing equations yields an elastic solution to start creep analysis. The creep behavior is demonstrated through Norton's equation based on Pandey's experimental results extracted for Al-SiC functionally graded material. A linear variation is assumed for temperature distribution along the thickness direction. The creep strain, as well as the thermal strain, are included in the governing equations derived from classical plate theory for mechanical strain. A successive elastic solution based on Mendelson's method is employed to derive the history of stresses, strains, and displacements over a long time. History of stresses and deformations are obtained over a long time to predict damage to the plate because of various loadings, and material composition along the thickness and planar directions.

  • In this paper, the creep characteristics of lead and lead-free solder joint were investigated using the QFP(Quad Flat Package) creep test. Two kind of solder pastes(Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu, Sn-0.2Sb-0.4Ag-37.4Pb) were applied to the QFP solder joints and each specimen was checked the external and internal failures(i.e., wetting failure, void, pin hole, poor-heel fillet) by digital microscope and X-ray inspection. The creep test was conducted at the temperatures of $100^{\circ}C$ and $130^{\circ}C$ under the load of 15$\sim$20% of average pull strength in solder joints. The creep characteristics of each solder joints were compared using the creep strain-time curve and creep strain rate-stress curves. Through the comparison, the Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu solder joints have higher creep resistance than that of Sn-0.3Sb-0.4Ag-37.4Pb. Also, the grain boundary sliding in the fracture surface and the necking of solder joint were observed by FE-SEM.

  • An effect is made in this study to deepen understanding of small punch(SP) creep testing which has been a round for about 10 years as a substitute for the conventional uniaxial creep testing. Even though considerable numbers of SP creep test program have been performed, most of the tests were aimed at measuring creep rupture lives only. Very flew studies showed interest on the meaning of what we were really measuring during the SP creep tests. In this paper meanings of the parameters measured during the SP creep testing, such as punch load and punch displacement rate are investigated using finite element analysis. It was shown that the measured parameters must represent the stress and strain rates of the material at the annular region located at about 0.65 mm from the center of the SP specimen. The material in this location would go through constant maximum stress and strain rate during the testing. Experimental verification is also discussed.

  • Kachanov-Rabotnov(K-R) creep damage theory was reviewed, and applied to design a creep curve for type 316LN stainless steel. Seven coefficients used in the theory, i.e., A, B, k, m, λ, r, and q were determined, and their physical meanings were analyzed clearly. In order to quantify a damage parameter ($\omega$), cavity amount was measured in the crept specimen taken from interrupted creep test with time variation, and then the amount was reflected into K-R damage equations. Coefficient λ, which is regarded as a creep tolerance feature of a material, increased with creep strain. Mater curve with λ=2.8 was well coincided with an experimental one to the full lifetime. The relationship between damage parameter and life fraction was matched with the theory at exponent ${\gamma}$=24 value. It is concluded that K-R damage equation was reliable as the modelling equation for type 316LN stainless steel. Coefficient data obtained from type 316LN stainless steel can be utilized for life prediction of operating material.
