In order to integrate two consolidation theories of Terzaghi's consolidation theory and Mesri's secondary compression theory and to identify a model suitable for analyzing stress-strain behavior over time, numerical analysis on consolidation tests were conducted using a modified cam-clay model and a soft soil creep model and the following conclusions were obtained. The results of numerical analysis applying the theory that a linear proportional relationship is established between the void ratio at logarithmic scale and the permeability coefficient at logarithmic scale is better agreement with the result of oedometer test than the results of applying constant hydraulic conductivity. The modified cam-clay model is a model that does not include secondary compression, but the slope of the normal consolidation line corresponding to the compression index of the standard consolidation test includes secondary compression, so the actual settlement curve over time is lower than the predicted value through numerical analysis. It always gets smaller. Other previous studies that applied Terzaghi's consolidation theory to consolidation test analysis showed the same results and were cross-confirmed. The soft soil creep model, which includes secondary compression in the theory, showed good agreement in all sections including secondary compression in the consolidation test results. It was judged appropriate to use a soft soil creep model when performing numerical analysis of soft clay ground.

Creep and shrinkage have pronounced effects on the long-term deflection of prestressed concrete members. Under repeated loading, the rate of creep in prestressed concrete members is often accelerated. In this paper, an iterative computational procedure based on the well known Model B3 for creep and shrinkage was developed to predict the time-dependent deflection of partially prestressed concrete members. The developed model was validated using the experimental observed deflection behavior of a simply supported partially prestressed concrete beam under repeated loading. The validated model was then employed to make predictions of the long-term deflection of the prestressed beams under a variety of conditions (e.g., water cement ratio, relatively humidity and time at drying). The simulation results demonstrate that ignoring creep and shrinkage could lead to significant underestimation of the long-term deflection of a prestressed concrete member. The model will prove useful in reducing the long-term deflection of the prestressed concrete members via the optimal selection of a concrete mix and prestressing forces.

In order to develop nondestructive techniques for the quantitative estimation of creep damage a series of crept copper samples were prepared and their ultrasonic velocities were measured. Velocities measured in three directions with respect to the loading axis decreased nonlinearly and their anisotropy increased as a function of creep-induced porosity. A progressive damage model was described to explain the void-velocity relationship, including the anisotropy. The comparison of modeling study showed that the creep voids evolved from sphere toward flat oblate spheroid with its minor axis aligned along the stress direction. This model allowed us to determine the average aspect ratio of voids for a given porosity content. A novel technique, the back propagation neural network (BPNN), was applied for estimating the porosity content due to the creep damage. The measured velocities were used to train the BP classifier, and its accuracy was tested on another set of creep samples containing 0 to 0.7 % void content. When the void aspect ratio was used as input parameter together with the velocity data, the NN algorithm provided much better estimation of void content.
The higher-order asymptotic C(t) - $A_2(t)$ approach was employed to investigate the crack-tip stress of two collinear cracks in a power-law creeping material under the plane strain conditions. A comprehensive calculation was made of the single crack, collinear crack model with S/a = 0.4 and 0.8, by using the C(t) - $A_2(t)$ approach, HRR-type field and the finite element analysis; the latter two methods were used to check the constraint significance and the calculation accuracy of the C(t) - $A_2(t)$ approach, respectively. With increasing the creep time, the constraint $A_2$ was exponentially increased in the small-scale creep stage, while no discernible dependency of the constraint $A_2$ on the creep time was found at the extensive creep state. In addition, the creep time and the mechanical loads have no distinct influence on accuracy of the results obtained from the higher-order asymptotic C(t) - $A_2(t)$ approach. In comparison with the HRR-type field, the higher-order asymptotic C(t) - $A_2(t)$ solution matches well with the finite element results for the collinear crack model.

To predict the time-dependent behavior of concrete structures, the models which describe the time-dependent characteristics of concrete, i.e. creep and shrinkage are required. However, there must be significant differences between the displacements that are obtained using the given creep and shrinkage models and the measured displacements, because of the uncertainties of creep and shrinkage model itself and those of environmental condition. There are some efforts to reduce these error or uncertainties by using the model which are obtained from creep test for the concrete in construction site. Nevertheless, the predicted values from this model may be still different from the actual values due to the same reason. This study aimed to propose a method of estimating the creep coefficient from the measured displacements of concrete structure, where creep model uncertainty factor was considered as an error factor of creep model. Numerical validation for double composite steel box and concrete beam showed desirable feasibility of the presented method. Consideration of the time-dependent characteristics of creep as one of the error factors make it possible to predict long-term behaviors of concrete structures more realistically, especially long-span PSC girder bridges and concrete cable-stayed bridges of which major problem is the geometry control under construction and maintenance.
The thermal creep is one of the major factors causing the buckle of steel columns in the fire events. But, few related studies have been reported to evaluate the factors affecting the thermal creep of steel column experimentally or numerically. In this study a series of Fire-resistant steel columns with three different slenderness ratios under a sustained load are tested under a uniform temperature up to six hours in order to evaluate the creep upon three selected factors, temperature, applied load, and column slenderness. Based on experimental results, a proposed creep strain rate model is established as the function of a single parameter of the load ratio of temperature LR(T) to determine the buckling time of steel column due to creep. Furthermore it is found that the creep can be neglected when LR(T) is smaller than 0.77.

As polymer concrete become more widely used by design engineers, it is important that the viscoelastic mechanical behavior of these materials is properly taken into account. Also, an important consideration in the design of polymer concrete is the behavior of creep according to ages of polymer concrete. In this study, flexural creep test was performed on recycled-PET polymer concrete. An method of accelerating the flexural creep tests, called the two-point method, was developed. The two-point method uses the results of three 24-hours creep tests performed at elevated temperatures to develop a Prony series equation that predicts the long-term creep strains at room temperature. The test results demonstrated that two-point method can predict long-term creep strain with sufficient accuracy. The difference between the predicted creep compliance values from those obtained experimentally was less than 5 percent.
The present study aims at characterizing and modeling the anisotropic creep behavior of coated textile membrane, a class of flexible textile composites that are used for moderate span enclosures (roofs and air-halls). The objective is to develop a creep model for predicting the lifetime of coated textile membrane. Uniaxial creep tests were conducted on three off-axis coupon specimens to obtain the directional creep compliance. A potential with three parameters is shown to be adequate for modeling the anisotropic creep behavior of coated textile membrane. Furthermore, a possibility of predicting the creep deformation of coated textile membrane in a multi-axial stress state is discussed using the three-parameter potential.
Plate anchors are often used for various types of offshore construction and maintenance works. When the plates are embedded in soft clay and subjected to sustanined allowable loads, creep may develop. This paper presents some results from laboratory model test designed to study the creep effect that develops with time for a shallow circular anchor subjected to sustained net loads that are less than the net ultimate uplift capacity. Based on the model test results, relationships among the net load, the rate of strain, and time are developed.
In order to get the information of the deformational behavior of rock masses with time in waste disposal repository, it is necessary to measure the relationships between stress and strain and time for temperature. A creep law is used in conjunction with the elastic moduli to calculate stress and displacement following waste emplacement. Exponential-time law's parameters consist of stress and temperature. In this study, thermal creep test was carried out for Whangdeung granite. The measured creep deformation behavior was well explained by exponential time law and generalized Kelvin's rheological model. Mechanicla coefficients for exponential-time creep law showed the clear tendency of temperature dependent while those for Kelvein's model didn't.
