Many car manufacturers have frequently adopted an aggressive inflator and a lower threshold speed for airbag deployment in order to meet an injury requirement for unbolted occupant at high speed crash test. Consequently, today's occupant safety restraint system has a weakness due to an airbag induced injury at low speed crash event. This paper proposes a new crash algorithm to improve the weakness by suppressing airbag deployment at low speed crash event in case of belted condition. The proposed algorithm consists of two major blocks-crash severity algorithm and deployment logic block. The first block decides crash severity with two levels by means of velocity and crash energy calculation from acceleration signal. The second block implemented by simple AND/OR logic combines the crash severity level and seat belt status information to generate firing commands for airbag and belt pretensioner. Furthermore, it can be extended to adopt additional sensor information from passenger presence detection sensor and safing sensor. A simulation using real crash data for a 1,800cc passenger vehicle has been conducted to verify the performance of proposed algorithm.

Airbag deployment has been responsible for huge death, incidental injuries and broken bones due to low crash severity and wrong deployment decision. This misfortune has led the authorities and the industries to pursue uniquely designed airbags incorporating crash-sensing technologies. This paper provides a thorough discussion underlying crash sensing algorithm approaches for the subject matter. Unfortunately, most algorithms used for crash sensing still have some problems. They either deploy at low severity or fail to trigger the airbag on time. In this work, the crash-sensing algorithm is studied by analyzing the data obtained from the variables such as (i) change of velocity, (ii) speed of the vehicle and (iii) acceleration. The change of velocity is used to detect crash while speed of the vehicle provides relevant information for deployment decision. This paper also demonstrates crash severity with respect to the changing speed of the vehicle. Crash sensing simulations were carried out using Simulink, Stateflow, SimMechanics and Virtual Reality toolboxes. These toolboxes are also used to validate the results obtained from the simulated experiments of crash sensing, airbag deployment decision and its crash severity detection of the proposed system.
OBJECTIVES : Fixed roadside objects are a threat to drivers when their vehicles deviate from the road. Therefore, such roadside objects need to be suitably dealt with to decrease accidents. This study determines the factors affecting the severity of accidents because of fixed roadside objects. METHODS : This study analyzed the crash severity impact of fixed roadside objects by using ordered probit regression as the analysis methodology. In this research, data from 896 traffic accidents reported in the last three years were used. These accidents consisted of sole-car accidents, fixed roadside object accidents, and lane-departure accidents on the national highway of Korea. The accident severity was classified as light injury, severe injury, and death. The factors relating to the road and the driver were collected as independent variables. RESULTS : The result of the analysis showed that the variables of the crash severity impact are the collision location (left side), gender of the driver (female), alcohol use, collision facility (roadside trees, traffic signals, telephone poles), and type of road (rural segments). Additionally, the collision location (left side), gender of the driver (female), alcohol use, collision facility (street trees, traffic signals, telephone poles), and type of road (rural segments), in order of influence, were found to be the factors affecting the crash severity in accidents due to fixed roadside objects. CONCLUSIONS : An alternative solution is urgently required to reduce the crash severity in accidents due to fixed roadside objects. Such a solution can consider the appropriate places to install breakaway devices and energy-absorbing systems.
Buses, one of the representative public transportation modes, are divided into a vareity of service types according to the purpose of operation, operating distance, and management agencies. Although bus-involved crashes may cause large amount of damage due to the higher number of passengers boarded on a bus, prior research has little focused on crash severity according to bus service types. This study aims to investigate factors influencing crash severity in bus-involved crashes and to present policy implications to reduce crash severity by bus service type. To do this, bus-involved crash data from the Traffic Accident Analysis System (TAAS) during five-year period are used. Ordered probit models for three types of bus service, i.e., city bus, suburban and express buses, and charter buses, are estimated to analyze the factors of accident severity. The results show that there are significant differences of factors affecting crash severity among the types of bus services while speed and road surface influence all the types of buses. In case of local buses, time of day, roadway alignment, and installation of a traffic signal are found to be statistically significant factors. Seat belt and road class have significant effects on injury severity of the intercity and express buses. Chartered buses have time of day, driving experience, seatbelt, traffic signal, and day of week as the significant factors. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the reduction of the crash severity by each bus service type.

The performance of crash cushion systems is certified through the full scale crash tests by the standard for installation and maintenance guidelines for roadside safety appurtenance. The impact severities of impacting vehicles in collision with crash cushion systems are rated by indices THIV and PHD. Crash test results are considered to study the performance of three crash cushion systems. In case of the frontal impact or the offset frontal impact, the results show that THIV values of three systems are very close to the threshold limit for the occupant protection. Also, the results show that PHD would be improper for the occupant protection performance index. In order to improve the occupant protection performance of crash cushions, ASI needs to be included in the impact severity index.

In recent, technological advancement including a vehicle black box (VBB) has led to reducing such underreporting issues and errors of crash data. The objective of this study is to analyze the injury severity of cyclists on taxi-to-two wheeler crashes based on the accurate crash data collected from the VBB in taxi. This study defined the two wheelers as bicycle and motorcycle. To perform this study, we used the VBB data collected from taxis operating in Incheon, South Korea for a two-year period (2010-2011). An ordered probit model was applied to analyze the injury severity in crashes. As a result, new injury severity factors were found: increase of the crash speed of taxi, damage of crash-involved vehicles (i.e., taxi and/or two wheeler), not standing of cyclists after crash, and second or third impact of cyclists after first crash.

In general, truck-involved crashes increase severity in terms of both injury level and crash impact level. Recently, although the frequency and fatality of truck-involved crashes in Korea are rising, their associative studies are very limited. Therefore, the objective of this study is to identify critical factors influencing on injury severity of truck-involved crashes on Korean freeway system. To carry out this objective, this study uses an ordered probit model (OPM) based on a 6-year crash dataset from 2012 to 2017. From the analysis, eight variables were found to have a great effect on injury severity: older driver, crash speed, rear-end collision, number of vehicles involved, drowsy driving, nighttime (0:00 to 6:00) driving, overturn or rollover, and vehicle's fire after crash. However, injury severity was less severe in crashes under snowy condition and crashes to traffic facilities (i.e., crash alone).
Research on the safety of autonomous vehicle is being conducted in various countries, including the European Union, and computer simulation techniques so called 'Virtual Tool Chain' are mainly used. As part of the crash safety study of autonomous vehicle, 25 car to car collision scenarios were provided as a result of a real accident-based accident reproduction analysis study conducted by a domestic research institution, and a vehicle crash analysis was performed using the FE car to car model of the Honda Accord. In order to analyze the results of the car to car simulation and to construct a database, major crash parameters were selected as impact speed, angle, location, and overlap, and a method of defining them in an indexed form was presented. In order to compare the crash severity of each scenario, a value obtained by integrating the resultant acceleration measured by the ACU of the vehicle was applied. The equivalent collision test mode was derived by comparing the crash severity of the regulation test mode, 30 deg rigid barrier mode, in the same way.

The traffic accident types are largely classified into vehicle to vehicle accident, vehicle-to-person accident and single-vehicle. Especially, the single-vehicle accident types are severe when the vehicle crashed into road facilities such as bridge, piers, utility poles. The severity of single-vehicle accidents are ten times higher than that of all other accidents types. It is needed to consider to reduce accident severity. This study was conducted to develop crash worthy safety design facility to ensure the vehicle occupant safety. The simulation and the crash tests were conducted for assessment of the safety performance to check the criteria of CC2(Crash Cushion 2) level. THIV(Theoretical Head Impact Velocity) and PHD(Post-impact Head Deceleration) were used to assess occupant impact severity for crashes. The non-redirection collision test conditions for 900 kg and 1,300 kg-head on crash tests, 900 kg-1/4 offset crash tests, 1,300 kg-head on crash test with $15^{\circ}$angle were conducted. The simulation and experiment test result showed that THIV values were below 44 km/h criterion, PHD values were below the 20G. The development non-redirective crash cushion is expected to be used for the fixed object such as bridge piers for assuring occupant safety.
In the study of traffic safety, the analysis on factors affecting crash severity and the understanding about their relationship is important to be planning and execute to improve safety of road and traffic facilities. The purpose of this study is to develop a hierarchical binomial logistic model to identify the significant factors affecting fatal injuries and vehicle damages of traffic crashes on freeway. Two models on death and total vehicle damage are developed. The hierarchical structure of response variable is composed of two level, crash-occupant and crash-vehicle. As a result, we have gotten the crash-level random effect from these hierarchical structure as well as the fixed effect of covariates, namely odds ratio. The crash on the main line and in-out section have greater damage than other facilities. Injuries and vehicle damages are severe in case of traffic violations, centerline invasion and speeding. Also, collision crash and fire occurrence is more severe damaged than other crash types. The surrounding environment of surface conditions by climate and visibility conditions by day and night is a significant factor on crash occurrence. On the orher hand, the geometric condition of road isn't.
