  • In this paper two control strategies, command shaping control and optimal control, which aim to the reduction of the residual vibrations of the payload in a container crane system are investigated. Both control methods are open loop control. Due to unmodeled dynamics of the plant and disturbances like initial sway and wind, some residual sway always exists at the end of trolley movement. Command inputs are designed to achieve the control objectives including minimal residual vibration and robustness in the presence of unmodeled dynamics. Simulation results of various command inputs are compared in terms of arrival time, residual sway angle, robustness, and maximum sway distance during the traveling. Command shaping method provides a more competent tool than optimal control.

  • The most important thing in acontainer terminal is to handle the cargo effectively in the limited time available. To achieve this objective, many strategies have been introduced and applied. To create an automated container terminal, it is necessary for the cargo handling equipment to be equipped with more intelligent control systems. From the middle of the 1990's, automated rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGC) and rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTG) have been widely used to handle containers in yards. Recently, many pieces of equipment, like CCD cameras and sensors, have beenmounted in these cranes to cope with the automated terminal environment. In this paper, we try to support the development of more intelligent automated cranes, which allow for more effective cargo handling in yards. For this purpose, the modeling, tracking control, anti-sway system design, skew motion suppressing, and complicated motion control and suppressing problems must be considered. Especially, in this paper, the system modeling and a new tracking control approach are discussed, and an experimental study is performed based on a two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) servosystem design.

  • The swing motion of the spreader during and after movement causes an efficiency problem of position control in unmaned gantry crane. The objective of this research is to design implementable stabilizing controllers that minimize the swing motion of spreader in precise position control. The dynamic equations related to trolley, rope, and spreader are derived. For constitute a similar actual system, we introduced a conception of spring and damper in the connector. It is located between the trolley and link that is used in stead of rope. We derived dynamic equation by appliance that friction and external disturbance are occurred to the connector. We constituted of position servo system and velocity servo system for the control of position and velocity of the trolley and constituted of lag compensator system for the control of sway of the spreader. And we will show an effect of the proposed system in this research finally.

  • In this study, system modeling and dynamic analysis of crane are conducted. Especially, among many different kinds of a crane system, the issues on crane operating problems installed on the vessel are considered. As well known, marine systems including cranes are exposed to various disturbances such as vessel motions, hydrodynamic forces, wave and wind attack, etc. In order to analysis the system dynamic with environmental conditions, the authors derived the nonlinear dynamic model of offshore crane and derived a linear model which is used for designing the control system. Using the obtained nonlinear and linear models, simulations were conducted to evaluate the usefulness of the obtained models. By simulation and result evaluation, the usefulness of the linear model, which presents the dynamics, is effectively verified.

  • In this paper, a feedback linearizing anti-sway control law, using a 2-D model for container cranes, is investigated. The equations of motion are first derived from Lagrange's equation. Then, by substituting the sway dynamics into the trolley dynamics, a reduction of variables from three (trolley, hoist, sway) to two (trolley, hoist) is pursued. The anti-sway control law is designed based on the Lyapunov stability theorem. The proposed control law guarantees the uniform asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system. The simulation results of the derived control law, using MATLAB/Simulink, are compared with those of the sliding mode control law, noted in previous literature. Also, experimental results using a 3-D pilot crane are provided.

  • In case that the perfect model following conditions are not satisfied in the system, a perfect model-following controller is difficult to apply to the system. To deal with this problem, in this paper, a robust imperfect stable model-following controller is designed by combining time delay controller and sliding mode controller based on the concept of two degrees of freedom(2-DOF) controller design method. The experimental dynamic modeling of the commercial overhead crane with capacity of two tons is carried out. To remove the noise of the measuring signals from the swing angle measurement device and estimate the state of the swing angles of the transported object at each time instant, realtime tracker is designed using Kalman filter. The performance of the designed robust controller is tested through the commercial overhead. The experimental results show that the designed controller is robust and applicable to real systems.

  • In this paper, we design a GA-fuzzy controller for position control and anti-swing at the destination point. A genetic algorithm is used to complement the demerits such as the difficulty of the component selection of the fuzzy controller, namely, scaling factors, membership functions and control rules. Lagrange equation is used to represent the motion equation of trolley and load in order to obtain mathematical modelling. Simulation results show that the proposed control technique is superior to a conventional optimal control in destination point moving and modification.

  • In this paper, as an anti-sway control strategy of container cranes, we investigate a variable structure control in which the moving load follows a given trajectory, whereas both the trolley and hoist controllers achieve their positioning problems. It is crucial, in an automated container terminal, that collisions should be avoided during the transference of containers from one place to another. It is also necessary, in the case of a quay crane, to select suitable loading and unloading trajectories of containers, so that possible collisions with surrounding obstacles are avoided. After a brief introduction of the mathematical model, a robust control scheme (i.e., a second-order sliding mode control that guarantees a fast and precise transference and a suppression of the resulted swing) is presented. Despite model uncertainties and unmodeled actuators dynamics, the swing suppression from the given trajectory is obtained by constraining the system motion on suitable sliding surfaces, which include both the desired path and the swing angle. The proposed controller has been tested with a laboratory-size pilot crane. Experimental results are provided.

  • In general, the swing motions of a crane are controlled and suppressed by controlling the trolley motion. In many of our previous studies, we suggested a new type of anti-sway control system for a crane. In this proposed control system, a small auxiliary mass (moving-mass) is installed on the spreader and moving this auxiliary mass controls tire swing motion. The actuator reaction against the auxiliary mass applies inertial control forces to the container in order to reduce the swing motion in the desired manner. However, measuring systems based on a laser sensor or other means are not veryuseful in real-worldapplications. So, in this paper, animage sensor is used to measure the motions of the spreader and the measured data are fed back to the controller in real time. The applied image processing technique is a kind of robust template matching method called Vector Code Correlation (VCC), which was devised to consider real environmental conditions. The H $\infty$ based control technique is applied to suppress the swing motion of the crane. Experimental results showed that the proposed measurement and control system based on an image sensor is useful and robust to disturbances.

  • This paper describes a camera-based position measurement system for automatic tracking control of a rubber Tired Gantry Crane (RTGC). An automatic tracking control of RTGC depends on the ability to measure its displacement and angle from a guide line that the RTGC has to follow. The measurement system proposed in this paper is composed of a camera and a PC that are mounted on the right upper between front and rear tires of the RTGC's side. The measurement accuracy of the system is affected by disturbances such as cracks and stains of the guide line, shadows, and halation from the light fluctuation. To overcome the disturbances, both side edges of the guide line are detected as two straight lines from an input image taken by the camera, and parameters of the straight lines are determined by using Hough transform. The displacement and angle of the RTGC from the guide line can be obtained from these parameters with the robustness against the disturbances. From the experiments with the disturbances, we found the accurate displacement and the angle from the guide line that have the standard deviations of 0.95 pixels and 0.22 degrees, respectively.
