  • This paper presents a simple method to estimate fully plastic crack tip stresses of unequally notched specimen based on the equilibrium condition of the least upper bounds for plane strain deformation fields. The method is applied to unequally notched specimens under bending and tension. For various notch angle the limit loads and crack tip stresses are estimated from the present method and compared with results from finite element limit analyses.

  • In this paper, a novel approach to estimate cohesive laws for the mode I fracture of the graphene is presented by combining molecular dynamic simulations and an inverse algorithm based on field projection method and finite element method. The determination of crack-tip cohesive laws of the graphene based on continuum mechanics is a non-trivial inverse problem of finding unknown tractions and separations from atomic simulations. The displacements of molecular dynamic simulations in a region far away from the crack tip are transferred to finite element nodes by using moving least square approximation. Inverse analyses for extracting unknown cohesive tractions and separation behind the crack tip can be carried out by using conservation nature of the interaction J- and M-integrals with numerical auxiliary fields which are generated by systematically imposing uniform surface tractions element-by-element along the crack surfaces in finite element models. The preset method can be a very successful approach to extract crack-tip cohesive laws from molecular dynamic simulations as a scale bridging method.

  • This study presents a moving least squares (MLS) finite difference method for solving elastic crack problems with stress singularity at the crack tip. Near-tip functions are intrinsically employed in the MLS approximation to model near-tip field inducing singularity in stress field. employment of the functions does not lose the merit of the MLS Taylor polynomial approximation which approximates the derivatives of a function without actual differentiating process. In the formulation of crack problem, computational efficiency is considerably improved by taking the strong formulation instead of weak formulation involving time consuming numerical quadrature Difference equations are constructed on the nodes distributed in computational domain. Numerical experiments for crack problems show that the intrinsically enriched MLS finite difference method can sharply capture the singular behavior of near-tip stress and accurately evaluate stress intensity factors.

  • In this study, the purpose is to investigate the influence of initial residual stresses on the fatigue crack growth behaviors after the distribution of initial residual stresses Is measured when the crack is growing from the compressive residual stresses field to the tensile residual stress field. Also, the Influence of the variation of residual stress distribution on the fatigue crack growth behaviors at the crack tip is studied when the initial crack li applied on base metal, weld metal and HAZ respectively.

  • This paper describes an experimental study of growing ductile crack-tip behaviors by means of computer image processing technique and finite element method. Here, the displacement field near a crack-tip is first measured by the computer image processing technique. Combined with the finite element technique, strain and stress fields are evaluated from the measured displacement. Then, crack-tip parameters such as J-integral are evaluated using the obtained displacement, strain and stress fields. The present technique Is applied to a growing crack problem of tensile CT specimen made of 304 stainless steel. The ductile crack growth behaviors accompanied by unloading are discussed in detail through the comparison between the experimental and the theoretical results.

  • When the interfacial crack of two dissimilar isotropic bi-materials is propagated with constant velocity along the interface, stress and displacement components are derived in this research. The dynamic photoelastic experimental hybrid method for bimaterial is introduced. It is assured that stress components and dynamic photoelastic hybrid method developed in this research are valid. Separating method of stress component is introduced from only dynamic photoelastic fringe patterns. Crack propagating velocity of interfacial crack is 80∼85% (in case of aluminum, 24.3∼25.9%) of Rayleigh wave velocity of epoxy resin. The near-field stress components of crack-tip are similar with those of pure isotropic material under static or dynamic loading, but very near-field stress components of crack-tip are different from those.

  • Domain switching effect on crack growth in ferroelectric ceramics under combined electric and mechanical loading is investigated. The shape and size of the switching zone is shown to depend strongly on the relative magnitude between the applied electric field and stress field as well as on the ratio of the coercive electric field to the yield electric field. The toughening mechanism is thought to be ferroelectric domain switching leading to the development of a process zone around the crack. Crack-tip stress intensity factor induced by domain switching for the steady state crack growth is numerically obtained.

  • Abrupt change of cross-section in mechanical parts is one of significant causes of structural fracture. In this paper, a hybrid method is employed to analyze the stress distribution of a discontinuous plate. The plate with an inclined crack is utilized in our experiment and the stress field in the vicinity of crack tip is calculated through isochromatic fringe order of given points. This calculation can be made handy through least-squares method integrated with complex power series representation(Laurent series) implemented on a computer program for high-speed processing. In order to accurately compare calculated results with experimental ones, both of actual and regenerated photoelastic fringe patterns are doubled and sharpened by digital image processing. The experiment results show that regenerated patterns obtained by hybrid method are quite comparable to actual patterns.

  • The shape and size of the plastic zone around the crack tip are analyzed under pure mode I, pure mode II and mixed mode (I+II) loading for small scale yielding and for both plane stress and plane strain conditions. A new analytical formulation is presented to determine the radius of the plastic zone in a non-dimensional form. In particular, the effect of T-stress on the plastic zone around the crack tip is studied. The results of this investigation indicate that the stress field with a T-stress always yields a larger plastic zone than the field without a T-stress. It is found that under predominantly mode I loading, the effect of a negative T-stress on the size of the plastic zone is more dramatic than a positive T-stress. However, when mode II portion of loading is dominating the effect of both positive and negative T-stresses on the size of the plastic zone is almost equal. For validating the analytical results, several finite element analyses were performed. It is shown that the results obtained by the proposed analytical formulation are in very good agreements with those obtained from the finite element analyses.

  • In order to study the influence of a circular inclusion on a stress field neat a crack tip, mutual interference of a crack and the circular inclusion is analyzed by using the two dimensional boundary element method program made for the analysis of a bimaterial inclusion. The stress intensity factor of an inclusion which has small stiffness is a little greater than that of large stiffness in the near-by crack tip, and similar values tends to appear for distant crack tips. A line crack shows the repetition phenomena which caused by stress mutual interference depending on the radius and stiffness of an inclusion, and the repetition phenomena becoms weak in the inclusion which has large stiffness. Stress mutual interference shows repetition phenomena after extension of a line crack by the length of the radius of the inclusion which has small stiffness.
