  • Ships and ocean structures are subjected to random loads caused by irregular waves. The irregularity of amplitude from random loading affects on fatigue crack growth and fatigue life. However the effects of irregularity of loading on fatigue including random loading have not been explained exactly. Therefore in this paper crack growth tests on DENT specimens under constant-amplitude loading including a single tensile overload are conducted to investigate the effect of overload on crack growth rate. The size of plastic zone and crack growth rate before and after a single tensile overloading are measured using ESPI system. Crack growth retardation model that is characterized by crack growth length and the size of plastic zone was proposed and compared with test result. From the research, the validity of proposed model is examined on crack growth retardation, and consequently fatigue life.

  • In order to clarify the effect of overload on crack growth behaviors, fatigue tests for overload were carried out for round plain specimens of SM45C steel. In the experiment, typical semi-elliptical crack shape was found and further crack growth behaviors were tested. Using three types of single overload fatigue tests, Crack growth retardation phenomenon were examined. The growth rate of surface crack(da/dN) during retardation period was analyzed in terms of ${\Delta}K$ and ${\Delta}K_{eff}$. On the growth rate of surface crack analyzed by ${\Delta}K$, the dependence of overload stress levels appears. However, on the growth rate by ${\Delta}K_{eff}$ obtained by Willenborg analysis, there is a liner relationship between da/dN and ${\Delta}K_{eff}$ with narrow scatter band.

  • In this study, retardation behavior of fatigue crack under single overloading of the mixed mode I+II state was experimentally investigated. To produce single overload in the mixed mode I+II state, the compact tension shear (CTS) specimen and loading device were used. The propagation tests for fatigue crack were performed under mode I loading overloading afterwards. We examined the observed deformation aspects, variation of fatigue life and crack propagation rate, and the aspects of retardation behavior from tests. The retardation effect of mixed-mode single overload on fatigue crack propagation behavior was smaller than that of mode I single overload. It has been confirmed that the retardation behavior did not immediately appear and the retardation length was short when the component of mixed-mode overload was changed.

  • Constant .DELTA.K fatigue crack growth rate experiments were performed by applying an intermediate single and multiple overload for structural steel, SM45C. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the influence of multiple overloads at various stress intensity factor ranges and the effect of statistical variability of crack retardation behavior. The normalized delayed load cycle, delayed crack length and the minimum crack growth rate are increased with increasing baseline stress intensity factor range when the overload ratio and the number of overload application were constant. The crack retardation under low baseline stress intensity factor range increases by increasing the number of overload application, but the minimum crack growth rate decreases by increasing the number of overload application. A strong linear correlation exists between the minimum crack growth rate and the number of overload applications. And, it was observed that the variability in the crack growth retardation behavior are presented, the probability distribution functions of delayed load cycle, delayed crack length and crack growth life are 2-parameter Weibull. The coefficient of variation of delayed load cycle and delayed crack length for the number of 10 overload applications data are 14.8 and 9.2%, respectively.

  • Effects of strain hardening exponents on the behavior of fatigue crack propagation are experimentally investigated. The retardation effect of fatigue crack propagation after single overloading is investigated in relation to strain hardening exponent and crack closure. A relationship between crack opening ratio and strain hardening exponents is inspected through an examination of the crack closure behavior. An empirical equation relating retardation effect of fatigue crack propagation after single overloading, percent peak load and strain hardening exponent of materials is proposed.

  • It is difficult to explain the effects of complex variable loading experienced by the machine and the structure only with the studies of the single-overload itself. Hence, it is thought that the variation of overload-holding time are required to explain the effects more clearly. The effects of the overload were analyzed by means of the crack retardation, and the fractography on retardation zone. A characteristic of the fractography on retardation zone was that striation distribution did not appear due to decreased crack driving force. Rotary bending fatigue tests were performed with the circular shaft which has two hole defects.

  • 6063-T5 alloys are tested in laboratory air, water and 3% NaCl solution to investigate the effects of corrosive environment on the retardation behavior through single overload fatigue test. Also, the fatigue crack propagation and the crack closure behavior are studied. The results obtained in this experimental study are summarized as follows: 1) Behaviors of fatigue crack growth retardation are observed in water and 3% NaCl solution as they do in air. The number of delay cycles and the size of affected region by single overload decrease greatly in water and 3% NaCl compared with those in air. 2) In fractographic results, the overload marking by single overload appear remarkably in air, but indistinctly in water and 3% NaCl solution. 3) The effect of crack closure on crack propagation is most remarkable in the beginning of crack propagation. With crack propagation, the crack closure level and its effect decrease greatly.

  • It is well known that the fatigue crack growth retardation following overloads can be estimated reasonably well by the models of Wheeler and Willenborg. These models, however, can not explain the delayed-retardation revealed by every experimental result. This means that they necessarily have some qualitative defects in themselves despite of a fair approximation of quantity. In fact, they did not take into account the effects of the compressive portion of the overload cycle such as the change of reversed plastic zone size. The present study is focused on the acceleration effect in the reversed plastic zone in order to analyze qualitatively delayed-retardation phenomenon following single peak overload on the fatigue crack growth behavior using 2024-T3 aluminum alloy.

  • The load interaction effect can be best illustrated by the phenomenon of overload retardation. Some prediction methods for retardation are reviewed and the problems discussed in the present paper. The so-called under-load effect much of the retardation disappears if a very low level minimum stress follows the overload, is also of importance for a prediction model to work properly under random load spectrum. The concept of Interactive Zone (IZ) fully considering reversed plasticity during unloading was discussed. This IZ concept can be combined with existing models to derive some improved models that can naturally take account of the under-load effect. Some simulations by IZ improved models for test under complex load sequences including multiple overloads and both over/under loads are compared with test results. It is seen that the improvement by IZ concept greatly enhanced the ability of existing models to accommodate complex load interaction effects.
