Corrosion of rebars can occur if there are cracks, moisture and availability of oxygen or carbonation proceeds, chloride penetrates and diffuses in concrete. Once rebars in concrete corrodes, subsequently accompanied with scaling, spalling in concrete cover. As a result of them, the RC structure is seriously deteriorated. In this study, theoretical review and experiments for cathodic protection(CP) have been performed to control corrosion of rebars in concrete contained chlorides and pre-crack. For CP the impressed current system was applied, the protection effect was investigated when rebars was directly contacted with salt water due to crack and open to much chlorides in concrete. In order to investigate the effect of protection, when CP was energized for 1 year, half-cell potential, potential-decay with current density, corrosion ratio, etc. were measured. With the cathodic protection by impressed current system, the depolarized values of all specimen were met NACE Standard, the effect of 34~84% of the ratio of corrosion area and 84~86% of cross-section reduction were calculated.

The purpese of this research is to experimentally verify the effect of prestressing on the control of cracks and on the possible increase of load capacity of the members by testing five beams with same cross section and same reinforcement ratio but with different amounts of prestressing. The test results indicate that the ultimate strength of prestressed concrete beams is only slightly higher than that of unprestressed concrete beams. It may be however need more experimental results to come to this conclusion. But it can be clearly seen that the effect of prestressing on the crack width is remarkable and that the reduction of about to 50% in crack width under service loads can be easily achieved by introducing small prestressing (about 25% of a fully prestressing).

In this paper, computation results of reducible modeling, stress recovery and energy release rate were compared with the results of VABS, Virtual Crack Closure Technique. The result of stress recovery analysis for 1-D model including the stiffness matrix is compared with stress results of three-dimensional 3-D FEM. Energy release rate of composite beam with longitudinal cracks is calculated and compare verifications of numerical analysis results of 3-D FEM and VABS. The procedure of calculating energy release rate through dimensional reduction and stress recovery is intended to be efficient and be utilized in the life-cycle of high-altitude uav's wing, wind blades and tilt rotor blade.
Normally all manufacturing and fabrication processes introduce residual stresses in a component. These stresses exist even after all service or external loads have been removed. Residual stresses have been studied elaborately in the past and even in depth research have been done to determine their magnitude and distribution during different manufacturing processes. But very few works have dealt with the study of residual stresses formation during the casting process. Even though these stresses are less in magnitude, they still result in crack formation and subsequent failure in later phases of the component usage. In this work, the residual stresses developed in a shifter during casting process are first determined by finite element analysis using ANSYS(R) Mechanical APDL, Release 12.0 software. Initially the analysis was done on a simple block to determine the optimum element size and boundary conditions. With these values, the actual shifter component was analyzed. All these simulations are done in an uncoupled thermal and structural environment. The results showed the areas of maximum residual stress. This was followed by the geometrical optimization of the cast part for minimum residual stresses. The resulting shape gave lesser and more evenly distributed residual stresses. Crack compliance method was used to experimentally determine the residual stresses in the modified cast part. The results obtained from the measurements are verified by finite element analysis findings.
This paper presents the test results of 12 direct tensile specimens to investigate the effect of cover thickness on the tension stiffening behavior in axially loaded reinforced concrete tensile members. Six concrete cover thickness ratios are selected as a main experimental parameter. The results showed that, as cover thickness became thinner, more extensive split cracking along the reinforcement occurred and transverse crack spacing became smaller, making the effective tensile stiffness of thin specimens at the stabilized cracking stage to be much smaller than that of thick specimens. This observation is not implemented in the current design provisions, in which the significant reduction of tension stiffening effect can be achieved by applying thinner cover thickness. Based on the present results, a modified tension stiffening factor is proposed to account for the effect of the cover thickness.

Rails are key elements in railway superstructure since these elements receive directly the train load transmitted by the wheels. Simultaneously, rails must provide effective stress transference to the rest of the track elements. This track element often deteriorates as a consequence of the vehicle passing or manufacturing imperfections that cause in rail several defects. Among these rail defects, transverse cracks highlights and are considered a severe pathology because they can suddenly trigger the rail failure. This study is focused on UIC-60 rails with transverse cracks. A 3-D FEM model is developed in ANSYS for the flawless rail in which conditions simulating the crack presence are implemented. To account for the inertia loss of the rail as a consequence of the cracking, a reduction of the bending stiffness of the rail is considered. The numerical models have been calibrated using the first four bending vibration modes in terms of frequencies. These vibration frequencies have been obtained using the Experimental Modal Analysis technique, studying the changes in the modal parameters of the rails induced by the crack and comparing the results obtained by the model with experimental results. Finally, the calibrated and validated models for the single rail have been implemented in a complete railway ballasted track FEM model in order to study the static influence of the cracks on the rail deflection caused by a load passing.
Structural damage to an arch dam is often of major concern and must be evaluated for probable rehabilitation to ensure safe, regular, normal operation. This evaluation is crucial to prevent any catastrophic or failure consequences for the life time of the dam. If specific major damage such as a large crack occurs to the dam body, the assessments will be necessary to determine the current level of safety and predict the resistance of the structure to various future loading such as earthquakes, etc. This study investigates the behavior of an arch dam cracked due to water pressure. Safety factors (SFs), of shear and compressive tractions were calculated at the surfaces of the contraction joints and the cracks. The results indicated that for cracking with an extension depth of half the thickness of the dam body, for both cases of penetration and non-penetration of water load into the cracks, SFs only slightly reduces. However, in case of increasing the depth of crack extension into the entire thickness of the dam body, the friction angle of the cracked surface is crucial; however, if it reduces, the normal loading SFs of stresses and joints tractions reduce significantly.

In this study, the experimental and analytical study were performed on the location of longitudinal cracks in the middle of underground box structures. The location where the longitudinal cracking occurred was investigated that the overlapping joint of the rebar and the section of maximum tensile stress generated. Using the finite element analysis, the strength reduction ratio of the rebar was estimated by lack of overlap joint length. As the result of adequacy investigation for the length of the overlap joint presented in the design criteria, it was analytically proved that the lack of the overlap joint length could be cause the decreasing cross-sectional force and concrete cracking. As the result of this study, the adequacy of the overlapping criterion in the current design criteria was confirmed based on the finite element analysis and actual field case. In the case of overlapping joints installed in inappropriate position, it was considered that a long term crack control would be need to ensure the sufficient safety factor for the designed cross-sectional force.

The expenses of maintenance and reinforcement for aged concrete structures are significantly on the increase as their durability and general performance has been naturally degraded. Due to this reason, interests on concrete crack reduction technology are growing but more researches are required to fulfill such fast growing demands. Particularly in the underground power facilities, it is difficult to maintain the quality of aging concrete spheres for underground power as their deterioration caused by long-term operation is on-going. In recent years, many studies have been made to overcome the issues and now it is determined that the shrinkage reducing technology which can dramatically reduce the crack at the design stage is one of the most effective solutions. In this study, the test investigated fundamental propertiesof concrete using various shrinkage reducing materials to develop low shrinkage mortar. According to results of experimental study, for mortar and concrete, glycol based material showed excellent shrinkage property and compressive strength. For the later study to generic application of the shrinkage reducing materials, performance reviews on the shrinkage reducing materials with variable factors and various materials such as changes in the amount and type of materials should be followed.

This study investigates the effect of layered double hydroxide (LDH) on the healing performance of self-healing concrete by assessing the chloride penetration resistance of self-healing cement mortars using electrical chloride ion migration-diffusion test. Test results show that both mortars containing healing materials only and mortars containing healing materials and Ca-Al LDH together mostly had higher migration-diffusion coefficients right after cracking, but the migration-diffusion coefficients decreased more than that of OPC with increasing healing ages, and thus, they yielded higher healing capacities than OPC. Also, mortars containing Ca-Al LDH together with healing materials showed higher reduction of their migration-diffusion coefficients, and thus, higher healing capacities than mortars containing healing materials only. This suggests that as the self-healing product increases on the crack surface, the binding of chloride ions by LDH inside the crack increases.
