Objectives: The aim was to evaluate dentinal crack formation after root canal preparation with ProTaper Next system (PTN) with and without a glide path. Materials and Methods: Forty-five mesial roots of mandibular first molars were selected. Fifteen teeth were left unprepared and served as controls. The experimental groups consist of mesiobuccal and mesiolingual root canals of remaining 30 teeth, which were divided into 2 groups (n = 15): Group PG/PTN, glide path was created with ProGlider (PG) and then canals were shaped with PTN system; Group PTN, glide path was not prepared and canals were shaped with PTN system only. All roots were sectioned perpendicular to the long axis at 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 mm from the apex, and the sections were observed under a stereomicroscope. The presence/absence of cracks was recorded. Data were analyzed with chi-square tests with Yates correction. Results: There were no significant differences in crack formation between the PTN with and without glide path preparation. The incidence of cracks observed in PG/PTN and PTN groups was 17.8% and 28.9%, respectively. Conclusions: The creation of a glide path with ProGlider before ProTaper Next rotary system did not influence dentinal crack formation in root canals.

The loading condition of actual construction works is complex. The shear effect of mixed-mode load component are crack propagation mechanism in step larger than the crack initial mechanism. Therefore, in this study received a mixed-mode loading on fatigue crack stress ratio on crack propagation path and speed of progress to learn whether stress affects crack propagation. ${\Delta}$ P a constant state of fatigue tests in Mode I, II give the same stress ratio, frequency 10Hz, sinusoidal waveform was used. A lower stress ratio fatigue crack propagation angle is small. This is less affected by the Mode II. Therefore, a mixed-mode fatigue crack propagation is to progress by the Mode. Stress ratio in a mixed mode crack in the path of progress and found a lot of impact.
Applications of bonded dissimilar materials such as IC package, ceramic/metal and resin/metal bonded joints, are very increasing in various industry fields. It is very important to analyze the thermal stress and stress singularity at interface edges in bonded joints of dissimilar materials. In orer to understand the package crack emanating from the edge of Die pad and Resin, fracture mechanics of bonded dissimilar materials and material properties are obtained. In this paper, the thermal stress and its singularity index for the IC package were analyzed using 2-dimensional elastic boundary element method. Crack propagation angle and path by thermal stress were numerically simulated with boundary element method.

It is very important to analyze the thermal stress and stress singularity at interface edge in bonded joints of dissimilar materials. In order to investigate the IC package crack propagating from the edge of die pad and resin, the fracture parameters of bonded dissimilar materials and material properties are obtained. In this paper, the thermal stress and its singularity index for the IC package were analyzed using 2-dimensional elastic boundary element method(BEM). From these results, crack propagation direction and path by thermal stress in the IC package were numerically simulated with boundary element method.

To estimate the fatigue crack propagation behavior of compact tension shear (CTS) specimen under mixed-mode loads, crack path prediction theories and Tanaka's equation were applied. The stress intensity factor at a newly created crack tip was calculated using a finite element method via ANSYS, and the crack path and crack increment were then obtained from the crack path prediction theories, Tanaka's equation, and the Paris' equation, which were preprogrammed in Microsoft Excel. A new method called the finite element crack tip updating method (FECTUM) was developed. In this method, the finite element method and Microsoft Excel are used to calculate the stress intensity factors and the crack path, respectively, at the crack tip per each crack increment. The developed FECTUM was applied to simulate the fatigue crack propagation of a single-edge notched bending (SENB) specimen under eccentric three-point bending loads. The results showed that the number of cycles to failure of the specimen obtained experimentally and numerically were in good agreement within an error range of less than 3%.
A simple numerical scheme suitable for tracing the fracture propagation path for structures idealized by means of Hillerborg's classical cohesive crack model is presented. A direct collocation, multidomain boundary element method is adopted for the required space discretization. The algorithm proposed is necessarily iterative in nature since the crack itinerary is a priori unknown. The fracture process is assumed to be governed by a path-dependent generally nonlinear softening law. The potentialities of the method are illustrated through two examples.
Creep-fatigue crack growth behavior was experimentally measured particularly when a crack was located in the heat affected region of 1Cr-0.5Mo steel. Load hold times of the tests for trapezoidal fatigue waveshapes were varied among 0, 30, 300 and 3,600 seconds. Time-dependent crack growth rates were characterized by the $C_t$-parameter. It was found that the crack growth rates were the highest when the crack path was located along the fine-grained heat affected zone(FGHAZ). Cracks located in other heat affected regions had a tendency to change the crack path eventually to FGHAZ. Creep-fatigue crack growth law of the studied case is suggested in terms of $(da/dt)_{avg}$ vs. $(C_t)_{avg}$ for residual life assessment.

In this study, numerical analysis is applied to a two - dimensional model for verifying the general finite element program, Abaqus' s extended finite element method(XFEM). The cohesive element model used in the existing research has a limitation in simulating the actual crack because of the disadvantage that the crack path should be predicted and the element should be inserted. For this reason, the extended finite element method(XFEM), which predicts the path of cracks based on the directionality and specificity of stress, is emerging as a new solution in crack analysis. The validity of the XFEM application was confirmed by comparing the cohesive element analysis with the XFEM analysis by applying the crack path to the self - evident two - dimensional model. Numerical analysis confirms stress distribution and stress specificity immediately before crack initiation and compares it with actual crack initiation path. Based on this study, it is expected that cracks can be simulated by performing actual crack propagation analysis of complex models.
For the structures containing multiple discontinuities (voids, inclusions, and cracks), the simulation technologies in the framework of extended finite element method (XFEM) are discussed in details. The level set method is used for representing the location of inner discontinuous interfaces so that the mesh does not need to align with these discontinuities. Several illustrations have been given to verify that the implemented XFEM program is effective. Then, the implemented XFEM program is used to investigate the effects of the voids, inclusions, and minor cracks on the path of major crack propagation. For a plate containing cracks and voids, two possibly crack path can be observed: i) the crack propagates into the void; ii) the crack initially curves towards the void, then, the crack reorients itself and propagates along its original orientation. For a plate with a soft inclusion, the final predicted crack paths tend to close with the inclusion, and an evident difference of crack paths can be observed with different inclusion material properties. However, for a plate with a hard inclusion, the paths tend to away from the inclusion, and a slightly difference of crack paths can only be seen with different inclusion material properties. For a plate with several minor cracks, the trend of crack paths can still be described as that the crack initially curves towards these minor cracks, and then, the crack reorients itself and propagates almost horizontally along its original orientation.
In this study we simulate the fatigue test of a compact tension specimen and obtain the displacements, stresses and strains by using the finite element method. And we examine the path independency of $\Delta$J integral values and compare it with $\Delta$J integral values calculated from load-load line displacement curve. From the results of this study, we can find that $\Delta$J integral show the path Independency for saturated materials. We can also find that the path independency of $\Delta$J Is not satisfied when different material Is assumed near the crack tip, but the difference in $\Delta$J is small. And $\Delta$J integral values calculated from load-load line displacement is very analogous with those from integration path but always have lower values than those from integration paths. In the case of crack closing, we found that $\Delta$J integral values from load-load line displacement should be calculated with the load Increment values based on the crack opening point. The unsaturated material is also simulated and its $\Delta$J shows different values according to the path, but the difference is small.
