The aim of this study is an investigation of the interaction of two micro hole defects affecting fatigue crack initation life and propagation behavior. The locatio of two micro hole defects was considered as an angle of alignment and the distance between the centers of two micro hole defects. The fatigue cracking behavior is experimented under bending. When micro defects are located close to each other, the fatigue crack initiation lives are varied with their relative locations. In the experiments, the area of local plastic strain strongly played a role in the fatigue crack initiation lives. Therefore we introduce a parameter which contains the plastic deformation area at stress concentrations and propose a fatigue crack initiation life prediction curve. In addition, the directions and propagation rates of fatigue cracks initiated at two micro hole defects are studied experimentally.

High manganese steel was maintained stability of Non-Magnetics performance. Fatigue tests were carried out under constant stress amplitude, using a non-magnetic high manganese steel. The fatigue crack growth mechanism of the high manganese steel was clarified from results such as observation of crack growth path and fracture surface. The result of getting this study was shown as following: 1) Remarkably ${\Delta}Kth$ of the high manganese steel is big with about 3 times of the general steel product. 2) In the low ${\Delta}K$ value region, da/dN is dependent on Kmax, and in the high ${\Delta}K$ value region, it is dependent on ${\Delta}Keff$. The reason of this behavior is crack closure due to fracture surface roughness and fretting oxide. 3) It seems to ease the stress concentration of crack tip crack growth behavior in the ${\Delta}Kth$ vicinity by the generation of the secondary crack.
In this paper, in order to investigate the effects of marco and microscopic observations of fatigue crack growth in friction stir welded (FSWed) 7075-T651 aluminum alloy plates, fatigue crack growth tests were performed under constant amplitude loading condition at room temperature with three different pre-cack locations, namely base metal (BM-CL) and two kinds of pre-crack locations in welded joints, weld metal (WM-CL) and heat affected zone (HAZ-CL) specimens. The fatigue crack growth behavior of FSWed 7075-T651 aluminum alloy plates were discussed based on the marco and microscopic fractographic observations. The marcoscopic aspects of surface crack growth path for BM-CL and HAZ-CL specimens indicate relatively straight lines, however, the crack growth paths of WM-CL specimens grow first straight and by followed toward the TMAZ and HAZ. The microscopic aspects of fatigue fracture for BM-CL and HAZ-CL specimens indicate typical fatigue striation, but WM-CL showed intergranular fracture pattern by micro structural changes of FSW process.
A new path independent contour integral formulus for the distinct calculation of mode I stress intensity factors in two dimensional linear elastic fracture mechanics problems is presented. This method is based on p-convergence concepts and can be easily appended to existing finite element computer codes. In this study, the stress state at crack tip has been investigated and the path independence of J-integral values has been tested with respect to different contours expressed by normalized distance apart from the crack tip. Numerical results by p-convergence for the problems such as centrally cracked panels, single and double edged cracks in rectangular panels have been compared with those by the conventional h-convergence. The comparison demonstrates the accuracy and stability of the proposed method.
Fracture surfaces of materials contain useful information ranging from crack path to the mechanism of fracture. Since limitation of electron transparency requires a sample in the form of thin foil for TEM observations, it is impossible to extract such information directly from the fracture surfaces. In this study, the method of surface replication from the ceramic fracture surface is employed to characterize the process of crack propagation in ceramic matrix composites using TEM analysis. The surface replica from the fracture surface in ceramic materials provides detailed surface morphology and more importantly, loosened particles on the fracture surface are collected. Electron diffraction and chemical composition analyses of these particles reveal crack path in the specimen. Furthermore, one can determine the mode of fracture by observing the fracture surface morphology from the image of replica. Two examples are given to illustrate the potential of the surface replication technique. In the first example, apparent toughness increase in $B_{4}C-Al$ composites at high strain rate is investigated by surface replication to elucidate the mechanism of fracture at different strain rates. The polytypes of SiC formed during the sintering of SiC-AlN composite and their effect on the fracture behavior of SiC-AlN composite are analyzed in the second example.

The $J_{k}$ integral method for determining mixed mode stress intensity factors separately in the cracked anisotropic plate is developed. Stress intensity factors are indirectly determined from the values of $J_{1}$ and $J_{2}$. The $J_{2}$ integral can be evaluated efficiently from a finite element solution, neglecting the contribution from the portion of the integration contour along the crack faces, by selecting the integration contour in the vicinity of the crack tip. Using functions of a complex variable, the complete relations between $J_{1}$, $J_{2}$ and $K_{I}$ , $K_{II}$ for anisotropic materials are derived conveniently by selecting narrow rectangular contours shrinking to the crack tip. Compared to the existing path independent integral methods, the present method does not involve calculating the auxiliary solution and hence numerical procedures become quite simple. Numerical results to various problems are given and demonstrate the accuracy, stability and versatility of the method.

Recently, the uses of Ceramic/metal bonded joints, resin/metal joints, adhesive joints, composite materials which are composed of dissimiliar materials have increased in various industry fields. Since the ceramic/metal bonded joints material is made at a high temperature, residual stress distributions due to differences in material properties were investigated by varying material parameters. The two dimensional finite element analysis was performed to study residual stress distribution in Si3N4/SM45C bonded joint with a copper interlayer between the silicon nitride(Si3N4) and the structural carbon steel(SM45C) and 4-point bending tests were carried out under room temperature. Fracture surface and crack propagation path were observed using scanning electron microscope and characteristics of its fracture was discussed.

In this study, fatigue tests to obtain S-N curves and FE analyses to obtain structural stress concentration factors were conducted for the two types of cruciform fillet welded joints, that is, load-carrying and non load-carrying types. Then we changed the obtained S-N curve of load carrying joint to that based on hot spot stress. As a result, the S-N curve of load carrying joint based on hot-spot stress was almost exactly coincided with that of non load-carrying joint based on nominal stress. So we have conducted that the fatigue strength of a welded joint with different geometry from the non stress distribution along the expected crack path.

The research trends for metal matrix composites have been on basic mechanical properties, fatigue behavior after aging and fractographic observations. In this study, the fatigue crack initiation as well as the fatigue crack growth behavior and the fracture mechanism were investigated through observations of the fracture surface on silicon carbide particles reinforced aluminum metal matrix composites(SiCp/Al). Based on the fractographic study done by scanning electron microscope and replica, crack growth path model and fracture mechanism are presented. The mechanical properties, such as the tensile strength, yield strength and elongation of SiCp/Al composites are improved in a longitudinal direction, however, the fatigue life is shorter than the basic Al6061 alloys. From fractographic observations, it is found that the failure mode is ductile in basic Ai6061 alloys. And because some SiC particles were pulled out from the matrix and a few SiC particles could be seen on the fracture surface of SiCp/Al, crack growth paths are believed to follow the interface of the matrix and its particles.
The determination of the stress intensity factors is investigated by using the surface integral defined around the crack tip of the structure. In this work, the integral method is derived naturally from the standard path integral J. But the use of the surface integral is also extended to the case where body forces act. Computer program for obtaining the stress intensity factors $K_I$ and $K_{II}$ is developed, which prepares input variables from the result of the conventional finite element analysis. This paper provides a parabolic smooth curve function. By the use of the function and conventional element meshes in which the aspect ratio (element length at the crack tip/crack length) is about 25 percent, relatively accurate $K_I$ and K_{II}$ values can be obtained for the outer integral radius ranging from 1/3 to 1 of the crack length and for inner one zero.
