  • Acoustic Emission(AE) signals are emitted by a sudden release of strain energy associated with material damage. A multi-channels of LeCroy system and piezoelectric pressure transducers are employed for AE measurement to investigate the roles of AE in the propagation of macro cracks as well as the characteris-tics of AE wave in occurrence, amplitude and dominant frequency with changes in macro loading modes. Deduced crack opening volume of micro cracks varied widely and implies that AE events could be caused by crystal dislocations on a small scale and grain boundary movements on a large scale. Amplitude of first arrival AE wave emitted during mode I test was approximately 3 times higher than those from mixed mode test, while the number of AE count in mode I test was only 25% of mixed mode. It may imply that the total energy required for generation of a given fracture surface is similar regardless in change of macroloading modes.

  • Recently, aspheric glass lens molding core is fabricated with tungsten carbide(WC). If molding core is fabricated with silicon carbide(SiC), SiC coating process, which must be carried out before the Diamond-Like Carbon(DLC) coating can be eliminated and thus, manufacturing time and cost can be reduced. Diamond Like Carbon(DLC) is being researched in various fields because of its high hardness, high elasticity, high durability, and chemical stability and is used extensively in several industrial fields. Especially, the DLC coating of the molding core surface used in the fabrication of a glass lens is an important technical field, which affects the improvement of the demolding performance between the lens and molding core during the molding process and the molding core lifetime. Because SiC is a material of high hardness and high brittleness, it can crack or chip during grinding. It is, however, widely used in many fields because of its superior mechanical properties. In this paper, the grinding condition for silicon carbide(SiC) was developed under the grinding condition of tungsten carbide. A silicon carbide molding core was fabricated under this grinding condition. The measurement results of the SiC molding core were as follows: PV of 0.155 ${\mu}m$(apheric surface) and 0.094 ${\mu}m$(plane surface), Ra of 5.3 nm(aspheric surface) and 5.5 nm(plane surface).

  • This paper was the research of high voltage suspension insulator (400 [kN]) including pottery stone, feldspar, clay and alumina of 17 [wt%]. The slurry was fabricated after ball milling mixed raw materials. Green compacts were made by the extrusion of jiggering method and were sintered at 1300[$^{\circ}C$] for 50 [min.] in the tunnel kiln. The sintered density was reached to 97% of theoretical density, and the bending strength was 1658 [k $g_{f}$/$\textrm{cm}^2$] and hardness and fracture toughness which was measured by ICL( indentation crack length ) method were 1658 (kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$) and 27.5 [Gpa], respectively. In measurement of tana and insulation break voltage of 400 (kN) porcelain, tan$\delta$ took some numerical value between 17${\times}$10$_{-3}$ and 61${\times}$10$_{-3}$ and insulation break voltage value was 19.9$\pm$1.4 [㎸/mm]. The test was performed to research whether the shape of pin affect a overvoltage break load or not As a consequence, when a pin was designed a pin diameter 51 [mm] with the bottom form of two-step constructed with straight in the suspension insulator, Insulator showed overvoltage break load 52 [ton] of the highest value and reflected a fine characteristic in aged deterioration test which is one of the accelerated aging test. Also it could be confirmed a fine characteristic through performing the test that electrical property of insulator was established correctly in accordance with IEC 60383-1 standards.s.

  • KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) fabricated MOX (Mixed Oxide) fuel pellets as a cooperation project with PSI (Paul Scherrer Institut) for an irradiation test in the Halden reactor. The MOX pellets were fitted into fuel rods that included instrumentation for measurement in IFE (Institutt for Energiteknikk). The fuel rods were assembled into the test rig and irradiated in the Halden reactor up to 50 MWd/kgHM. The irradiated fuel rods were transported to the IFE, where ceramography was carried out. The fuel rods were cut transversely at the relatively higher burn-up locations and then the radial cross sections were observed. Micrographs were analyzed using an image analysis program and grain sizes along the radial direction were measured by the linear intercept method. Radial cracks in the irradiated MOX were observed that were generally circumferentially closed at the pellet periphery and open in the hot central region. A circumferential crack was formed along the boundary between the dark central and the outer regions. The inner surface of the cladding was covered with an oxide layer. Pu-rich spots were observed in the outer region of the fuel pellets. The spots were surrounded by many small pores and contained some big pores inside. Metallic fission product precipitates were observed mainly in the central region and in the inside of the Pu spots. The average areal fractions of the metallic precipitates at the radial cross section were 0.41% for rod 6 and 0.32% for rod 3. In the periphery, pore density smaller than 2 ${\mu}m$ was higher than that of the other regions. The grain growth occurred from 10 ${\mu}m$ to 12 ${\mu}m$ in the central region of rod 6 during irradiation.

  • Arc thermal spray coating using Al-3%Mg thermal spray wire was carried out to prevent steel from corrosion damage under the marine environment. Post-sealing was applied to Al-3%Mg spray coating treatment using organic/inorganic composite ceramics in order to improve the corrosion resistance of the as-sprayed coating. The results of various electrochemical experiments with sealing treatment indicated that the improvement in corrosion resistance was observed due to low current density in all applied potential range during anodic and cathodic polarization experiments. Futhermore, the natural potential measurement exhibited severe potential fluctuation due to influence of micro-crack presence on the surface of sealed thermal spray coating layer. In addition, the sealed layer was easily eliminated during anodic polarization. Nevertheless, Al-3%Mg spray coating layer improved corrosion resistance by sealing treatment because the sealed coating efficiency was determined to be 92.11%, indicating the exterior environment barrier effect which is based on the Tafel analysis.

  • Elastic-plastic fracture toughness J$_{IC}$ can be used as an effective design criterion in elastic plastic fracture mechanics. In the J$_{IC}$ test methods approved by ASTM and JSME, there are discrepancies such as the definition of J$_{IC}$, the slope of the blunting line, curve fitting method and the measurement of crack extension etc. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the effect of these discrepancies on the determination of J$_{IC}$ values. Fracture toughness tests were performed on A516, SA508 and SCM415 steels, and test results were analyzed according to ASTM E 813-81, ASTM E 813-87 and JSME S 001-1981. Results showed significant differences depending on the analysis methods. Therefore, a conversion equation between two ASTM methods was proposed, and the conversion error was within acceptable range(less then 8.5%)en 8.5%)

  • Lime was the solidifier mostly used at the fields of construction and civil works in the past. however, the development of Portland cement remarkably reduced the use of it. Recently as the concernment on circumstances gets higher, lime wined attention again as an eco-friendly material and was used at earth-using construction. This study examined the physical and chemical capacity of lime complexes with lime capacity improved, and performed fundamental study on the way to concretize by mixing it with earth. As a result, lime complex pressure strength was lower than cement pressure strength but it showed the possibility that its strength was improved by W/B control. The measurement of XRD after paste formation confirmed a compound generated by the reaction of Ca2+ion and Si, Al, and Fe from pozzolan reaction. A earth wall experiment by using lime complexes and earth showed that the higher, WB or the lower the quantity of unit combined materials, the lower the pressure strength was. The maximum pressure strength was maximum 11MPa when the quantity of unit combined materials was 450. It is because the composed earth particles had a high content of micro powder less than silt, so a lot of combination are demanded to secure fluidity. As a result of peptization experiment, after hardening, the material was not dissolved, which informed of the possibility of use as an outer subsidiary material. If the material is hardened by mold formation method, natural hardening crack appears. Cast expresses smart surface quality and enables to design for multiple purpose. The result shows the possibility of construction of low-story structures by using earth wall made of lime complexes and earth.

  • The planar Schottky diodes were fabricated and modeled to probe the device applicability of the cracked GaN epitaxial layer on a (111) silicon substrate. On the unintentionally n-doped GaN grown on silicon, we deposited Ti/Al/Ni/Au as the ohmic metal and Pt as the Schottky metal. The ohmic contact achieved a minimum contact resistivity of $5.51{\times}10.5{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^{2}$ after annealing in an $N_{2}$ ambient at $700^{\circ}C$ for 30 sec. The fabricated Schottky diode exhibited the barrier height of 0.7 eV and the ideality factor was 2.4, which are significantly lower than those parameters of crack free one. But in photoresponse measurement, the diode showed the peak responsivity of 0.097 A/W at 300 nm, the cutoff at 360 nm, and UV/visible rejection ratio of about $10^{2}$. The SPICE(Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis) simulation with a proposed model, which was composed with one Pt/GaN diode and three parasitic diodes, showed good agreement with the experiment.

  • Warm mix asphalt(WMA), which is produced at lower temperatures than hot mix asphalt, has advantages in reductions of fuel consumption and greenhouse-gas emission. In this study, field tests such as skid resistance, rutting(permanent deformation), and roughness were conducted for analysis of long-term field performance of modified warm mix asphalt pavement. Skid resistance after 20 months represents the result similar to initial performance results but rutting and roughness decreased somewhat depending on the period of performance. Measurement results of permanent deformation and roughness could be acceptable because measured pavement location is bus lane that a lot of buses pass and stop. There were no cracks after 11 months, but some minor cracks were observed after 20 months. These results were influenced by increased crack resistance due to fiber addition.

  • A new process, gelcasting in aqueous medium, to fabricate complex-shaped ceramic core has investigated. The ceramic slurry, mixture of fused silica powder and additives such as zircon and cordierite, was electrosterically stabilizes. The slip was prepared by ball milling of polydispered ceramic suspension with monomer, dimer and dispersant. The rheological behavior of slip was evaluated by viscosity measurement. It was found that the high solid loading of polydispersed ceramic slip, which has low viscosity of 50vol%, is possible to obtained. The viscosity of the slip was significantly dependent upon the amount of polymer dispersant and the formulation of monomer and dimer. The green bodies were fabricated through casting and gelation at room temperature followed by drying at $25^{\circ}C$ for 48hrs under relative humidity of 80~85%. Crack-free green body was successfully fabricated through the above process.
